Southfield Arts and Tech will have a new Boys Basketball Coach next winter.

Written Monday April 25th at 10:00 PM

Add another coaching vacancy in the OAA for Boys Basketball.

Coach Darryle Buchanan has stepped down coaching the Boys Basketball program at Southfield Arts and Tech on Monday afternoon.

The move was confirmed by Mitten Recruit on Twitter.

Buchanan led the Warriors to a 41-39 record in his four years with the program. He was 7-15 this season at Southfield Arts and Tech.

Buchanan went 29-14 in his first two seasons with the program but was 12-25 since then.

Southfield Arts and Tech has a lot of proven experience in Greg Davis, Davier Burt, Quantie Pryor, Ethan Taylor, Bryce Hewens, Kayel Sims, Nicholas Hardy, Matt Young, and Juwan Ramsey coming back next season.

The Warriors were in the White in Buchanan's three years but they were in to the Blue last season which they finished last in the division. Southfield Arts and Tech will be in the Gold next season.

Program strength is a big concern next season for Southfield Arts and Tech.

Buchanan is well known in the basketball community especially in the Detroit area.

Southfield Arts and Tech is the fourth OAA school looking for a new coach joining Stoney Creek, Groves, and Bloomfield Hills.

It will be very interesting to see what happens with the Warriors going forward.

Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest on this developing story.

The Way Too Early Top Ten Football Rankings.

Written Sunday April 17th at 12:00 PM

Happy Easter to everyone. We are in the middle of spring sports but football is getting closer and closer. These are NOT the official rankings, that comes during the preview show in August. Here is the way too early top ten football rankings and storylines to watch.

1. Adams- The Highlanders are fresh off making the Division One State Finals last season. They are loaded with experience in the skill positions. Depth on the lines should be something to watch this summer. Program strength is a concern. If Coach Tony Patritto can address this issue then the Highlanders should be back in the conversation again.

2. West Bloomfield- The Lakers are loaded with talent at each position on the field. They should be motivated after falling to Adams in the regional finals last season. Discipline will be the question for Coach Tyrice Grice this summer. If West Bloomfield can address their discipline issues then they could be right back in the thick of things.

3. Clarkston- The Wolves made some changes this offseason. They have a new coach in Justin Pintar. Pintar takes over for Coach Kurt Richardson whom retired this offseason. I expect the transition to be very smooth. Clarkston has a lot of proven talent coming back. They have an interesting quarterback competition but according to Pintar it's likely that Mike Hein is the guy under center. The Wolves should be in the mix this season.

4. Southfield Arts and Tech- The Warriors have had some really tough times lately. They are in a new division which should help. Southfield Arts and Tech is loaded with proven skill players. They have some questions at running back and also on both lines. Program strength is a concern for Coach Aaron Marshall. If Marshall can address program strength then the Warriors could be back in the postseason sooner than later.

5. Lake Orion- The Dragons made some changes this offseason. They have a new coach in Chris Bell whom is also the athletic director. Lake Orion is loaded with proven young experience but the summer is key to see where the Dragons go. The quarterback position will be the key area to watch for Bell. The return to old school should help things for Lake Orion.

6. Harper Woods- The Pioneers could have things very challenging in their first year in the OAA. They have a really tough schedule which should be nothing new. Harper Woods has a ton of proven linemen on both sides of the football along with a talented wide receiving and defensive secondary core. Coach Rob Oden needs to address the quarterback and running back positions this summer. If they can address both of these areas then they should do well in their first year in the OAA.

7. Oxford- It has been a really rough offseason for the Wildcats. Oxford lost a lot of talent from last season's team that upset Clarkston and made the district finals. They have a very tough schedule looming. Coach Zach Line could have a quarterback competition also looming. Their freshman program won eight games last season and the majority of them could be on varsity this season. It's going to be very interesting to watch how the Wildcats have this summer.

8. Berkley- The Bears have been getting better each of the last two years. Coach Sean Shields has done a wonderful job in building the foundation of the program. Berkley has to replace a ton of experience from last season. They will have a new quarterback in likely will be Sunny Kadlitz. The Bears have to find that deep threat and also address the secondary this summer. Program strength is a concern for Shields. If Berkley keeps doing great things, they should be a postseason player year in and year out.

9. Bloomfield Hills- The Blackhawks had a great year by winning the Blue and going undefeated but they were blown out by Novi Detroit Catholic Central in the first round. Bloomfield Hills needed to go up a division and play a tougher schedule and they are this season. They are loaded at the skill positions but have a ton of questions up front. Coach Dan Loria should be solid but they need to prove that last season wasn't a fluke.

10. Seaholm- It was a rough year for the Maples last season. Seaholm has a lot of talent coming back and is in a division that is very competitive. The Maples need to address their ground attack and both their lines then Coach Jim DeWald will have Seaholm back in the thick of things.

White retires at Groves.

Written Wednesday April 13th at 11:30 AM

The Falcons will have a new Boys Basketball coach next winter.

Groves coach Benny White announced his retirement from coaching boys basketball. The move was confirmed by the Falcons Twitter page.

"Thank you to Coach Benny White for four great years as our Boys Basketball Coach. We wish you well on your retirement" said the Groves Twitter page.

White is well known around the basketball world. He coached at Detroit Martin Luther King for 15 years and had a 201-89 record with the Crusaders. White was induced into the Detroit Public Schools League Hall of Fame in 2007 and was the regional coach of the year in 2010.

White coached for four years at Groves. He led the Falcons to a 42-34 record overall with the program. Groves went 13-8 this season falling to Birmingham Brother Rice in the district semifinals.

The Falcons lose a ton of experience in Nick Lurz, Ben Roman, Quinton Steele, Armat Sran, Paige Williams, Kalik Blount, and Aaron DuBose. They have Jack Abbot, Elijah Yelder, Max Kramer, Josh Gibson, Myles McClary, Brody Tushman, and Max Young coming back.

Program strength looks to be solid heading into next season for the new coach.

Thoughts

White did a very good job with the program. Groves improved each season under White. They won 13 games this season.

It will be very interesting to see what the Falcons do next season.

Bloomfield Hills will have a new Boys Basketball Coach next winter.

Written Monday April 4th at 7:30 PM

Updated Monday April 4th at 9:30 PM

There will be a new Boys Basketball Coach next winter at Bloomfield Hills.

Blackhawks coach Phil Kurajian has stepped down from the program. The move was confirmed on Kurajian's personal Twitter on Monday evening.

"The past five years have been an amazing journey and I'm extremely proud of what our student athletes have been able to accomplish on and off the court and in the classroom. Unfortunately due to advances and time constraints in my professional career, I must step down as the Head Varsity Coach at Bloomfield Hills High School. I want to thank the outstanding young men I was blessed to coach, the Bloomfield Hills administration and community for letting me be a part of the Blackhawk family and a special thank you to our District Athletic Director Mike Cowdrey for his belief and unwavering support" said Kurajian in a statement on Twitter.

Kurajian said to Hometown Life's Brandon Folsom that the reason he stepped down was because he was taking on a much bigger role with his family's food packaging business and will be traveling more.

He also became a father in which he has a one year old daughter at home.

Kurajian was 47-62 overall with two league titles (White) in his five years coaching the program. He led Bloomfield Hills to a 16-5 year this season.

The Blackhawks lose a lot of talent from this season's team but they have Noah Adamcyzk, CJ Jackson, Derrick Lee, Ahmad Taylor, and Brandon Newland coming back for whoever the new coach will be.

Program strength looks very strong for Bloomfield Hills in the future as well.

Kurajian did a lot of good for that program. He took over the Blackhawks and made them into a better program. It will be interesting to see who takes over next season.
