That didn't take long.
The Berkley Bears Girls Basketball program will have a new head coach next winter.
The Bears named Clay Shaver as their new head coach. Shaver takes over the program for Cody Feltner whom stepped down earlier in the month.
Shaver was an assistant at Milford. He is well known around the area.
"I'm thrilled and humbled to get to work with these student athletes and hope we can give them a special experience while building a culture that they and the community can be proud of. Thank you to my family for supporting me and "gently" nudging me when I thought this chapter of my life was over. Thank you to everyone at Berkley High School for an A+ experience during the interview process. They really do it right. Thank you to all of the other coaches that I've worked with over the years. I've stolen from all of you and will continue too. Can't wait to get after it" Shaver said on Twitter.
Shaver has a very good sports mind and knows girls basketball very well.
Shaver will be tasked to keep the Bears very competitive in what should be a very competitive division next season. Berkley went 11-10 this season falling to Detroit Renaissance in the district semifinals and 13-9 last season under Feltner. The Bears upset Detroit Renaissance in the district finals in Feltner's first season.
Berkley has Maeve Nolan, Avery Wintergarden, Hailey Kirkwood, Kate McAllister, and Nadia Watt coming back. Shaver will need to address program strength this offseason. The Bears are in a very interesting spot next season.
Thoughts
I think this will be a great hire. Shaver brings a lot of experience to Berkley. He also was at Milford and they have a ton of proven coaches over in Milford. Shaver needs to be in Berkley long term and if he does and builds the program then I think the Bears will be a much dangerous team next season and in the future.
Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest on this developing story.
