It wasn't no surprise to anyone that the Colts went someone they knew for their new coach.

Troy named Laura Guzman their new head coach of the girls basketball program confirmed on Twitter. She takes over for Julius Porter whom stepped down earlier this month. Porter led the Colts to a State Quarterfinal appearance in 2022.

Guzman coached at Farmington from 2017-2023. She was 55-64 in her six years at Farmington."When I was at Farmington, the strength of our non league games was way tougher than you mentioned. We literally were in the bottom league (Blue/Gold) and I would cross over with teams way above us and we competed. We didn't win but we competed with the kids we had" Guzman said.

Guzman has been known for taking rebuilding projects head on especially when she was at Farmingon. Program strength was an issue and it still is heading into next season.

The Colts really struggled last season with a ton of young talent in a very tough division which they were in the Red. Troy went 3-19 and fell 62-34 to Birmingham Seaholm in the first round last season.

Troy has Diamond Prince, Regan Zeiter, Olivia Sprangler, Carly Higginbottom, and Aly Matuza coming back for Guzman. They will also have Macey Zeiter coming into the program in two years. "I think the Troy girls are eager to learn. I think sleeper is a good work to describe the girls" said Guzman.

Guzman will see her former team Farmington in the Blue along with Adams, Berkley, Southfield Arts and Tech, and Troy Athens. The district should be very interesting with Seaholm, Troy Athens, Bloomfield Hills, and Avondale at Troy Athens.

Guzman also coaches softball at Troy.

It will be very interesting to see what happens. Guzman has a very tough challenge ahead of her. Also what happens to Farmington with Guzman's departure will also be something to watch. "My program will compete and they will work hard regardless of who we play. The girls are great kids" Guzman concluded.

Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest on this developing story.
