Thursday Recap.

Written Friday August 29th at 7:24 AM

This will also be on our new website https://aroundtheoaa.weebly.com/

Friday's recaps will be on the website.

Cedar Springs 57, AVONDALE 7.

The Jim Carlisle era at Avondale took a big hit on Thursday night. The Yellow Jackets allowed 57 points which was shocking for a proud defense. The Red Hawks got whatever they wanted against Avondale and they shut down the spread offense. Trouble is looming with the Yellow Jackets especially with Seaholm looming next week.

Livonia Franklin 34, BERKLEY 7.

The Bears took a big hit falling 34-7 to the Patriots at Hurley Field. Berkley needs to bounce back in a big way if they want to be competitive for the rest of the season.

Madison Heights Lamphere 17, FERNDALE 14 2 OT

The Eagles offense struggled against the Rams on Thursday night. Coach Donovan Jackson knew their has to be a transition period and it has to happen during the season. Ferndale fought in this game and went double overtime. I'm not pressing any panic buttons with the Eagles, defensively they are fine. Ferndale as a team is fine despite the record.

ROYAL OAK 17, St. Clair Lake Shore 7

The Ravens kept their momentum going with an impressive win in Macomb County. Royal Oak's defense played well holding the Shorians to seven points. There is a ton to clean up for Coach Collin Campbell's team but this is a start to maybe something special.

PONTIAC 20, Pontiac Arts and Tech 6.

This game's recap will be on the website https://aroundtheoaa.weebly.com/

SEAHOLM 31, TROY ATHENS 28.

This was a classic back and fourth game in Troy on Thursday night. The Red Hawks offense is there but the defense is not. The veer is a tough offense to defend and the Maples scored a bunch of points. Both defenses struggled in this game. Troy Athens has the offense to score points but defense is a warning sign. Seaholm we know what they can do with the veer but it's defense is a concern heading into next week.

TROY 17, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 13.

The Colts defense was the story in this game holding the Black Hawks to 13 points in Coach Scott Merchant's debut. The offense is the problem for Bloomfield Hills and scoring 13 points. Troy's defense played well as mentioned. Merchant knows what they need to clean up. The Colts are off to a good start but can they keep it up is the question.

NORTH FARMINGTON 20, Livonia Stevenson 7.

The Raiders got a measure of revenge after what happened in Livonia last season falling 27-20, North Farmington held the Spartans to seven points in a hard fought 20-7 win at Ron Holland Field. The Raiders still have some work to do offensively but the defense looks strong at the moment heading into next week.

ROCHESTER 34, Fraser 0.

The Falcons looked impressive on Thursday holding a Ramblers team scoreless. Fraser has a transition period that has to happen during the season. Rochester looked really good on both sides of the football. Their test comes next week when they play Adams.

GROVES 42, Detroit University Detroit Jesuit 7

The Falcons lost a lot of talent from last season but the new players showed up big time against the Cubs that should be much improved this season. Groves has some big tests coming up but this is a start for Coach Brendan Flaherty's team.

STONEY CREEK 42, Warren Cousino 28.

The Cougars had a test on Thursday against the Patriots in Rochester but Stoney Creek found a way to win 42-28. Offensively the Cougars look solid but defensively is where they need to clean up some things. It's a good start to the season for Stoney Creek but a big challenge awaits with Lake Orion looming next week.

CLARKSTON 38, Belleville 7.

The Wolves were really impressive against the Tigers especially defensively. Clarkston shut me up with their defense, all be it Belleville is very young but it's still Belleville. The Boman twins were dominant, Alex Wasczezko played well and threw a long touchdown pass but the story was the defense which was very impressive. The Tigers are in deep trouble in the KLAA. The Wolves have a big one with Harper Woods on the horizon.

ADAMS 39, Romeo 7.

The Highlanders were really impressive in their stunning blowout win over Romeo. Adams defense was the story shutting down the Bulldogs offense. Ryland Watters was also impressive for Coach Tony Patritto's squad. The Highlanders made a statement up front as well answering questions up front. It was an impressive win that is for sure.

Northville 14, LAKE ORION 13.

Normally I don't question Coach Chris Bell's decision making but this one might be the exception. The Dragons had a chance to win this game with a 43 yard field goal after recovering the onside kick after missing the extra point to tie the game but Bell decided to go for a Hail Mary and the gamble backfired. Lake Orion quarterback Anderson Adams was picked off in the endzone trying to throw to Ryan Rocheleau in double coverage sending them to their fourth straight loss at Wayne State. There was a lot of good to take from this game despite the loss. The perseverance and grit is there and the defense looked good but the offense needs to find their passing attack. There is no reason to panic with the Dragons, they are fine.

WEST BLOOMFIELD 37, Dearborn Fordson 0.

The Lakers defense looked stout shutting out a young Tractors team in the Swamp. West Bloomfield if they can keep improving offensively should be back to their normal selves. They looked dominant especially defensively. The Lakers look to ride that momentum with a game against Southfield Arts and Tech next week.

WATERFORD MOTT 45, Walled Lake Northern 0.

The Corsairs got off to an impressive start in Coach Tre'Jan Seay's debut with an impressive 45-0 win. Waterford Mott is halfway there offensively from last season. The Corsairs have a big test looming with Milford next week.

WATERFORD KETTERING, Walled Lake Central-NL

This game will be recapped on the website https://aroundtheoaa.weebly.com/

DIVISION RECAPS/STORYLINES:

In what is dubbed the toughest division in the State, the Red delivered with all five teams in the division making the postseason with Oxford winning the division crown last season but at least everyone in this division has at least won it st least once. The strange stat is the Red division winner has lost in the district finals the last two years. Adams went the furthest in the division making it to the Division One State Semifinals and has had multiple years of having deep postseason runs. It wouldn't surprise anyone if all five teams make the postseason again this season. These are some storylines to watch for.

Clarkston: The defense will be the story to watch despite being the fourth best in the OAA last season, 69 of the 185 points allowed was against Adams. The Wolves lost both games to the Highlanders by a combined 69-10 last season. Clarkston has the offense to compete with anyone despite the uniform changes which I wasn't a fan of personally. The Wolves will ride their star twins along with a proven quarterback. If Clarkston wants to have a deep postseason run it's not the offense they need to shore up, it's the defense that they need to improve on despite the optimism from their coaching staff and players there are some doubts.

Adams: The Highlanders have the balk of their team along with a returning Ryland Watters coming back. Depth, running back, and both lines are question marks for Adams. The Highlanders depth will be the story to watch going forward.

Lake Orion: The mindset will be the story when talking about the Dragons. There was something off with this team last season when it came to overconfidence and entitlement. If Lake Orion can change these two things and become more humble, driven, and hungry better results will come for this team.

Oxford: It was a special year for the Wildcats last season but they have a completely new team and a new coach. Oxford does have their quarterback coming back along with a few proven pass catchers. It will be how everyone gels will tell what the Wildcats will have this season.

West Bloomfield: The Lakers made the postseason despite a losing record. There are questions with it comes to program strength. Also chemistry will be something to watch with West Bloomfield. Both lines will be really interesting to watch as well. There are a lot of questions with the Lakers this season.

TOP FIVE GAMES:

1. Adams at Clarkston: Highlanders got the best of the Wolves twice outscoring them 69-10 in the two meetings played last season.

2. Oxford at Lake Orion: Dragons have had the Wildcats number but Oxford has the Double O Trophy heading south.

3. West Bloomfield at Lake Orion: Dragons and Lakers seem to play shootout games, this season could be one again.

4. Lake Orion at Clarkston: Dragons and Wolves have split the last two years, Lake Orion won the regular season but Clarkston in the playoffs. It wouldn't surprise anyone if these two meet again twice.

5. Adams at West Bloomfield: Highlanders and Lakers have had some classics over the years, don't expect anything different.

COMBINED RECORDS WITH LAST SEASON'S SCHEDULES (NON LEAGUE):

Clarkston: 38-18

Lake Orion: 26-23 (29-20 Saline's forfeits)

Adams: 24-25

West Bloomfield: 27-24

Oxford: 35-19

Easiest Schedule: Clarkston: Everyone in the Red has a tough schedule when they have to beat each other up but looking at the non conference slate the Wolves schedule looks the rosiest out of the five teams in the Red. Clarkston has Adams, Harper Woods, Lake Orion, Farmington, and Utica Eisenhower coming to the Wolves Den. They have tricky games against Oxford and West Bloomfield on the road. The non conference slate features a very interesting matchup with Belleville at Wayne State and Troy who could be in for a long season. Looking at this schedule more than six wins is highly likely.

Nightmare Schedule: Lake Orion: The Dragons have been used to playing a really tough schedule as of late. The schedule got Lake Orion into the playoffs in 2022 getting just enough points to make the field. The Dragons schedule is challenging with Northville at Wayne State to start. They have Stoney Creek, Oxford, West Bloomfield, and Oak Park coming to Dragon Stadium. Lake Orion has to go to Rochester, Adams, Clarkston, and Saline which are going to be really tough games. "Our league is really tough but we always say this if we can compete in our league, our goal is to win the OAA Red, I steal that from Bo Schembeckler, his goal every year is to win the Big Ten, our goal every year is to win the OAA Red because if we can win the Red, we know that we're playing good football and it's going to set us up for a good playoff run, district championships, regional championships, and onward so lets win the Red, that's goal number one" said Coach Chris Bell on the Lake Orion Football Preview Show. There is no days off with this schedule.

Team that's in Trouble: West Bloomfield: Tyler Kieft at Civic Center Television is going to hate me for this but looking at the Lakers schedule it's daunting. West Bloomfield should be 2-0 heading into their showdown with Adams but the rest of the schedule is scary. The Lakers have to go to Oxford and Lake Orion while Clarkston and Adams come to the Swamp. The non conference is not that rosy either with a new look Dearborn Fordson and what should be an improved Southfield Arts and Tech squad coming to the Swamp. They have rival Bloomfield Hills and Roseville in the final two weeks of the season with the Panthers game in the Swamp. Laker fans want to get back at the Panthers after falling to Roseville 49-48 in Macomb County last season. "The schedule is always tough, it's not unique to us, or anybody in the OAA Red who we play in the league or the crossovers and what not and we thought we competed with a lot of teams but we didn't come out in the right end and unfortunately you know like this is a results business, we all deeply care about the process becoming better people, better players and better individuals but we want those results just like anyone else does so our main focus is competing but also ending up on the other side of those" said Coach Zach Hilbers on Media Day. There could be a ton of nerves in Laker land this season.

ADAMS HIGHLANDERS:

LAST SEASON: 10-3, 2-2 Red. Lost 27-7 to Hudsonville in Division One state semifinals. 334 points scored (25.6 ppg,) 187 points allowed (14.3 ppg.)

MAKE OR BREAK: September 19th at Clarkston

STRENGTHS: Quarterback, Proven Receivers, Linebackers.

CONCERNS: Both Lines, Rushing Attack, Depth.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Nolan Farris- Quarterback/Wide Receiver/Linebacker

BOLD PREDICTION: Ryland Watters has 20 rushing touchdowns this season.

PROJECTED RECORD: 9-0, 4-0 Red. PLAYOFFS YES

INSIGHT: The Highlanders had a year where they overcame a ton of adversity with injuries and tough losses which was really similar to the movie "Return of the Titans." They returned to the Division One State Semifinals after having a season no one expected and their team explains a lot heading into this season there theme is "Privilege of Pressure." Adams lost quarterback Ryland Watters to an leg injury in their loss to Lake Orion and went on a two game losing streak after losing to Oxford but behind Nolan Farris they bounced back and went on a deep run beating Stoney Creek, Clarkston, and Grand Blanc making it to the Division One State Semifinals before falling 27-7 to Hudsonville. "Rhino (Ryland Watters) got hurt against Lake Orion in the second quarter and we're just figuring it out a little bit and Nolan Farris was his backup, he was a junior last year and the entire team rallied around him and what changed for us as the season progressed the belief system and the selflessness, a bunch of guys change positions because of injuries and the kids really bought in and in high school football when you have chemistry and selflessness, you can accomplish a lot, so it was a great team effort, it was kind of an uncommon focus for a high school team and we made it to the semis" said Coach Tony Patritto. Patritto brought the veer offense into the OAA in 2003 which included a Division Two State Championship in his first season in Rochester and has continued ever since. "It started way back in the late 80's when I was coaching at U-D Jesuit, I coached a guy name Ron Rice who went to Eastern (Michigan) and played for the Detroit Lions, he was a sophomore quarterback, he was 15 years old and we were playing in the Central division of the Catholic League at that time so Catholic Central, DeLaSalle, Brother Rice, St. Marys so we didn't have a lot of linemen so what gave us an opportunity to get us some first downs and move the ball and keep possession against those great teams was running triple (option) so that's where it all started. I learned most of it from Tony Annese who is now the head coach at Ferris State University and his brother coached many years for me and that's where I learned most of the fundamentals you know I studied the academies (Army, Navy, Air Force) and everyone who does their own little wrinkle on it, and when I went to Bishop Foley (Madison Heights) before I came to Adams (2002) we were in the same boat, you know we had a 22 man varsity roster playing DeLaSalle, Brother Rice, St. Marys, and those schools, DePorres back in the day and for us to be successful we had to double at the point of attack, read somebody and that we were only having to block 10 guys instead of 11 so that is the premise. Clearly what we do now is much more diversified with the spread option, we're still running elements of triple that people have to prepare for but with people loading the box, we can do some other things now" said Patritto on last season's podcast. Adams has a ton of lofty goals and expectations heading into this season but Patritto likes to keep his team more of the hunters role than the hunted. "We talk about this for a long time, the rat poison of entitlement, nobody cares that we went to the semis in fact people are annoyed by it, the people we play don't want to read about it, they hate us in many ways and I know they want to end us, we talk about all the time and if you have a sense of entitlement, there is no carryover in high school football it doesn't help you and often at times it's a hindrance to success if you were good the previous year so we know if we're not at our best, we're not going to win." Patritto added. Academics is another important element to the Highlanders success. "It's about the overall development of these young men, I kind of say what I think, people talk about this new generation of kids, how they're different, they're not, parents are different. Kids want to be disciplined, they want to be coached, they want to be challenged and they want to be great, you got to give them that opportunity and that means not only on the football field but also in the classroom and also in terms of character and how do you talk to girls, how do you talk at parties, how are you acting in society because that's what defines you is how you act and who you are and where you are at that time so for us it's a huge priority, Adams has a competitive academic environment across the board for all of our students so that's kind of the innate of the culture of our building and building our leadership, it starts with our principal and it works down to our teachers and I'm proud of that whole process" Patritto said about the culture of Adams.

Adams loves to play with a chip on their shoulder which was proven last season and it's something that Patritto looks for with this Highlanders team. "They wanted to prove to everyone that they belonged where they were, when your playing with a chip on your shoulder like that and your trying to earn the respect of your opponent you're going to really excel and I think especially against Clarkston that was the case because they've had our number in the playoffs, so we were pretty motivated" said Patritto. It's going to be different for Adams for offensive coordinator Mark Patritto who Tony gives credit to for helping him call the offense even though he's called the offense for a long time but handed off play calling to his son Mark. "I have to give credit to my son Mark who's helping me call the offense now and helping me kind of expand my thought process on the offensive side" Patritto added from last year's podcast. Patritto made more mentions about his son Mark on what he means to this program. "I trust Mark, he puts in the time in, he puts the studies and he does a great job morphing what we do to match the strength of our personnel, he had to completely change our mindset and our scheme after the Lake Orion game because we didn't have Rhino anymore, we had a different style of quarterback and that's hard to do when your the head coach, I'm a little more stubborn, I don't know if I would have done as good of a job so I'm excited for what he's done, we've worked as a staff to fix some of our problems, I know there were some things that we had to repair especially in special teams and situational football, specially we didn't do a good job in some of these areas, Mark is very critical of himself and I have absolute faith that he's going to get the most out of our guys offensively and I'm hoping we're going to be tough to stop." Patritto said. Adams has the skill players along with a strong senior class to make a deep postseason run. Watters comes back from injury at quarterback along with Farris likely moving back to wide receiver will help but there are question marks at running back after losing Matteo Humbert to graduation. Watters has a proven arm as a lefty along with his running ability where he had over 600 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns from the ground before the injury last season but this could be more balanced than in years past which is scary and this was the fifth best offense in the OAA last season."I have such respect for him because when he got hurt you know a lot of guys they kind of sorry for themselves and go into the tank, that dude invested in being a signal for us on offense, he made an investment in helping Nolan prepare for games and he was mentally involved in the long run for him to not play for a great athlete like him to not play, it's frustrating so he's very motivated by that and I think that his physical gifts of being 6.3, 225 and his desire to be a great teammate make him a special player, we have so much faith in Nolan and his backup Brady Lindstrom who's going to be a junior, we feel comfortable playing Rhino on defense (linebacker,) he's going to lead us to success" Patritto said about the Ferris State commit. They lost Lachlan Tillotson to graduation which is a huge loss on both sides of the football it's possible that Adams could use Cam DaWood at running back but there are others who could be there as well. "For us to be successful there's got to be balance, we can't know that this guy is going to get the ball, because they are going to take that guy away, last year we had Matteo Humbert who was a three year fullback, he was a 1300 yard rusher and is playing at Northwood, he was a great player, he was a great after contact runner, one of the stronger guys in the conference, there is other guys that carried the ball down the stretch, Cam Dawood was a really important player in both the run and the pass game last year, he ended up being our top receiver by the end of the year, he had more yards and receptions than Tillotson did so he's back, we're excited for him. There is a whole laundry list of guys that will pick up the slack but for us to be really good and for Adams to be at our best we got to have balance so people can't load up the box against a particular person" Patritto said of Dawood and his rushing attack. Watters will have proven pass catchers in Connor Helferich, Jessie Geoddes, TasRay Copeland, Farris, and Dawood coming back. Patritto credited Farris for what he did last season and is a big part of their team. He feels confident if have too move Watters to play defense full time even though not likely but he has confidence in Farris and the third string quarterback Brady Lindstrom. "Nolan is an amazing young man and when you talk to people about the team concept, it's hard being a backup and a great athlete, your just playing behind a great player. Josh Renall who played for us in 2007 spoke to our team during our camp and he was out west at Stanford and Steve Young (former San Fransisco 49ers quarterback) spoke about playing behind Joe Montana, he had kind of a victims mentality for a while and then he ended up figuring out, I need to be the best backup I can be so we can learn from that I think as coaches and as players that you never know when your number is going to be called. I think what Nolan did was an example of the ultimate team concept which what we emphasize at Adams, I think he's going to have a lot of fun this year whether it's playing quarterback in certain situations or in the slot (wide receiver) or if he's playing outside backer, he's an important part of our future." Patritto said of Farris. The lines are big concerns with not a lot of size but for Patritto despite having Henry Little and Noah Reynolds coming back. "That's the situation we got to figure out, Rowan Kawa and Liam Kenya were experienced guys, Rowan was one of the better linemen in the State playing right tackle for us and we had a senior who never started a game for us in Michael Konjarky and James Tsamadis both undersized guys, neither of them weighed under 200 pounds, and they were really good and they communicated and did their job with a lot of success, Henry Little is the only starter we have coming back so those other guys on our roster have to be ready to elevate and communicate, know their job and play the Adams way, even though they aren't the biggest guys in the world but they know they are blocking some of the best defensive linemen the State has to offer so they got to be really good with their technique, so I'm not sure who those guys are going to be yet, there are some guys battling, we got some good dudes, we just got to find the top five or six that's got to help us win." Patritto said. He mentioned Drew Shapner who could be a player to watch on both sides of the football. The defense could be a concern for Patritto and defensive coordinator Mike McFarland despite finishing with the second best defense in the OAA allowing 14.3 points per game last season. "That's where it begins and ends you know it's like Mark McFarland he's the best defensive coordinator around, not offending anyone else but if you look at what he's done with us at Adams over the last 22 years, you know really we do not have a competitive defense, he puts our guys in the best position to be successful, we've obviously changed a little bit over the years from a little over under 4-3 to more of an Oki front but one thing I always trust Coach McFarland with complete autonomy is to give our kids the best chance to get our defense off the field and our offense back onto the field" Patritto said about his defensive coordinator. The linebackers should be the strength for McFarland's defense with Watters, Farris, along with Matt Toeppner, and Dominic Backari coming back. "We have Matt Toeppner, he's a linebacker, he's really good on the edge both as a runner, as a receiver and as a mesh fullback." Patritto added about Toeppner. The defensive secondary is a concern despite having Dawood, Geoddes, Copeland, Helferich, and Landon Grenier coming back. "We have our leading tackler in Dominic Backari coming back, he was one of our linebackers, when your captain of the defense is coming back that helps. We have Drew Sismansky starting at defensive end and I'm really excited to have him back for another year. There are some great pieces but when you have a great senior class and you lose guys like Liam Kenya, Tommy Offer, and Paxton Battershall and Matteo Humbert and those guys, it's hard, it's kind of a morning period when those guys you trusted aren't there and really defense is about trust and I'm hoping we build and galvanize around our returning starters and younger guys that have to come up and play and be trusted are going to be those guys." Patritto said. Flip Watters could be a name to watch in the future of Adams football. Watters is a very talented baseball player but Patritto doesn't know where to play him at yet. Patritto mentioned the theme POP which "Pride of Pressure" crediting Rochester time keeper Mike Williams "He's a close friend of mine, he played at Albion, we talked philosophy and talk about excellence and about commitment for young people and he sent me something which made complete sense because of where we are and what kind of season we're coming off of, I'm not going to hide from the fact that people think we're going to be good but it doesn't mean we are, so that happens kind of organically each year sometimes it hits me, sometimes a TV show, sometimes it's a movie. Like over the last 35 years I come up with these motto's it's kind of like God's will it kind of dawns on me and we go with it and it's up to the kids to fulfill it" Patritto said about the mantra of the program.

Program strength looks to be solid for Patritto especially with the Rochester Raiders youth program which spreads kids among the Rochester School District (Adams, Rochester, and Stoney Creek.) They get kids from West Middle School where they share kids with Rochester while Van Hoosen Middle School feeds kids into Adams since they are next door to one another. "We get kids from two different middle schools (West and Van Hoosen) and our local club team (Rochester Raiders formerly the Rochester Redskins) I've never paid attention to anybody in the middle school so I have no idea what they are doing when they show up as freshman I coach them" Patritto said on last season's podcast. When talking to Patritto he still doesn't pay too much attention to the youth and middle school programs but when talking about his freshman he notices that ninth grade teams have a really difficult time preparing for the veer because they haven't seen it before. "Our freshmen was 8-1 (loss to Stoney Creek), their quarterback got hurt by the third game so that's a really good job by the staff and those kids because freshman football in the OAA Red is no joke, Our JV was 7-2 and we taken a couple of the better sophomores up to varsity so that staff did a great job. I'm proud that those kids showed up and grind all summer with us when we did volunteer workouts, we averaged 100 kids a day coming every single day to learn and how we do things and I hope it pays off, the hard thing is we run triple (veer) and for younger kids that's a hard offense to execute and when they do it well it's hard for freshman teams and JV teams to defense but they need experience of struggling before they get to us if we're going to have a chance to be successful. I feel really good of our low level coaches because we've had the same guys forever, that kind of continuity gives you a chance of being good, I'm blessed to have the same 12 guys coaching at all three levels as 2003 when I started and there is not a lot of high school programs that can brag, why are we successful, it's the staff we have and the focus they put into the players that makes us competitive, they are blindly loyal not in it for themselves. It's hard to find assistant coaches so I feel really lucky in that area" Patritto said. Things are looking rosy for the Highlanders but they have some issues to address before the season starts but Patritto believes that nothing should bother his program when it comes to current time and the preseason polls, they don't matter to him. "I just hope we're competitive enough to get in" Patritto concluded.

BEST CASE: The Highlanders don't miss a beat and they can play any fashion of football and come back if the deficit is 21 points or less. Watters stays healthy and has a monster season. The lines grow and stay healthy while Dawood and Copeland have big receiving seasons while Farris can be used anywhere. They find a proven running back to go along with depth. Adams could be a State title contender.

WORST CASE: Injuries especially to Watters again and Farris at the same time would be devastating. The veer struggles and they are trailing by more than 21 points in each game. The lines struggle and they don't have a clear cut running back in the veer offense. The defense is on the field way too long and struggles. Also postseason dreams could be in jeopardy if this scenario pans out.

SAMMY OUTLOOK: The Highlanders despite concerns on the lines and running back could be in line for a strong season especially with Ryland Watters coming back. They are better prepared if Watters gets hurt. Adams if they can get the depth and their issues in order, there is no reason why they should be in the division conversation and if Watters is healthy, then look out.

CLARKSTON WOLVES:

LAST SEASON: 7-4, 2-2 Red. Lost 41-0 to Adams in Division One district finals. 300 points scored (27.2 ppg,) 185 points allowed (16.8 ppg.)

MAKE OR BREAK: September 5th vs Harper Woods

STRENGTHS: Skill Positions.

CONCERNS: Defense, Both Lines.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Hayden Flavin- Offensive/Defensive Lineman

BOLD PREDICTION: Clarkston's defense allows 10 points per game this season.

PROJECTED RECORD: 8-1, 3-1 Red. PLAYOFFS YES.

INSIGHT: The Wolves had a really interesting year which seen a lot of ups and downs. Clarkston had moments where they looked really good and moments where they did not look so good (Adams lost 41-0 in the district finals) last season. The Wolves have a lot of proven players coming back for Coach Justin Pintar. Pintar credits Clarkston legends in former football coach Kurt Richardson along with the late boys basketball coach Dan Fife. "So when I first got hired in here, it was like the end of September, early October, the assistant principal who had just been hired and I was taking his spot actually introduced me to Coach Fife on one of my first days here and I sat with him and talked and I'd be interested in coaching seventh grade basketball so I got involved with that right away and then the following year KR (Kurt Richardson) had asked me if I would get involved in coaching seventh grade football and to walk into a situation to where I always knew that I wanted to coach, I got extremely lucky to be hired at Clarkston when I did, the job market was awful at that time, in the fall to have this kind of fall into my lap and to have two Hall of Fame Coaches in Coach Fife and KR it's pretty remarkable and so, it's extremely fortunate that those guys were around and I think the thing that both of those guys did is that they set a standard and they held everybody to it whether that was the players or the assistant coaches, those guys set the standard and that standard that they set is something they made sure everybody was going to meet. I think both guys did a phenomenal job throughout their careers of getting everything they could out of kids. If you look at the Clarkston basketball teams or the Clarkston football teams that we've had, there's been many games that we've had, if you look at the two teams on paper yet they wouldn't matchup but yet Clarkston has been able to compete and again that's what those two guys were able to do and that's the kind of legacy that they both left" Pintar said about Fife and Richardson.

The Clarkston defense comes into this season with a lot of questions despite having a ton of proven experience but still there are some serious questions with the Wolves. They allowed 41 against Adams in the district finals despite finishing fourth in points allowed 16.8 points per game and 185 points allowed in the OAA last season."It's a tough schedule coming into the year the OAA Red is a grind every single year, our non conference games, we're opening up with Belleville and ending with Eisenhower, we knew it was going to be a challenging schedule but I felt like that gets us ready for the postseason, in terms of the year there were certainly some ups and downs, we could have been a little bit more consistent in our play but we were playing really good football, I thought at the end of the year and then we ran into Adams again and they had our number for sure last year so you know it was a very disappointing finish because I think the team was playing really well at the end of the season, to go out and lose is one thing but to lose the way we did was certainly not a great feeling especially for the seniors who don't get another opportunity but I don't think that takes away for what was a really good year for us" Pintar said. The Wolves have a lot of proven experience on offense which was the fourth best in the OAA scoring 300 points which was 27.2 points per game last season. Clarkston has Alex Waszczenko at quarterback along with the Boman twins Griffin and Lukas at running back coming back. Waszczenko had a strong  sophomore season despite inconsistencies but really shined in the postseason against bitter rival Lake Orion in their stunning 34-16 win over the Dragons. "Alex had a great year for us, he came into a difficult spot being kind of thrown in there to when he was and being a sophomore with not a lot of varsity experience at all that point, it was difficult but he handles himself really well, he's got great composure, he's a great competitor which you know at anytime you have a kid who likes to compete that makes a big difference because that guy is going to go down swinging and you feel good when you got a guy like that, in terms of his development, I think from last year to this year, the amount of zip he has on the football, the ability to move on his feet on the run, all those things has gotten much better and he's already good at it at moving and throwing on the run last year but I think that's a strength of his right now" Pintar said on his quarterback. The Boman twins should get the most attention like they should but there is balance to this Clarkston offense which was fourth in scoring in the OAA last season. "They've been around, they know our system, those guys are ultra competitive and they give you everything they have, that's what we always appreciate. When the games are going we never have to question whether or not those guys are going to give you 100 percent so having those guys in their fourth year, they know our system in and out, they have the ability now just to go out there and play but they can coach the other guys around them so it's a nice luxury to have them back one more year" Pintar said about the Boman twins. The Wolves have proven pass catchers in Colton Williams, Hank Hornung, Cameron Love, and Wendell Childs coming back along with Brooks Kosin who could make some noise at tight end. "We feel really good about our skill guys and what we have, we got a number of guys that we feel really good about going and catching the football, our tight end position we're going to be not undersized but we don't have the 6.5, 6.6 guy like we had with Brody Kosin but we feel good about our tight ends. We have quite a few guys that can spread the football around, the twins can get out there and catch some passes, I think that will make us tough to defend is that there is not one guy you can key on, there is going to be multiple guys. We feel really good throwing the ball to six, seven, eight, nine guys, we feel really good letting them create in space" Pintar said about his pass catchers. The offensive and defensive lines should be solid with Hayden Flavin, Bodie St. Amour, and Zack Radlick coming back but they have some concerns as well on both lines. "We got three starters coming back which is key for us but we have to replace our right tackle and right guard but we got some seniors that are coming back that can fill that role, Kyle Orilo was the guy we kind of sent in there so we're really bringing back four of our top six from last year but we feel really good even though we don't have the significant amount of depth but we feel good about the guys we have coming back. Defensively we may be undersized but we got good athletes that can compete and create some problems and stuff and that's kind of how we have to be on defense" Pintar added. The defense is the major concern for Pintar but it really hasn't phased the Wolves on their outlook. "We're excited about our defense, we got some new faces up front but the back half of the secondary and our linebackers are going to be our returners, we'll have four overhang linebacker positions and that played a lot for us last year and should be key pieces of this team and in our secondary we replace a couple of guys but we really like the talent we have there and feel good about our skill positions on both sides of the ball really" Pintar said at Media Day. Clarkston has Lukas Boman, Tyson Scott, Brody Denver, and Trey Setters coming back at linebacker along with Griffin Boman, Williams, Nick Mahaffy (backup quarterback,) Love, and Childs are coming back in the defensive secondary. "Our skill guys are really strong, our linebackers are really good, we got a lot of experience back at the linebacker spot, I think it's about creating havoc up front, you know it's not about putting 300 pound linemen and stuff holes, it's going to be about creating havoc and make plays" Pintar said. Clarkston has Aiden O'Neil handling the kicking duties. The Wolves have a lot of proven experience but can they put it together is the question.

Program strength looks to be solid for Pintar in the freshman, junior varsity, middle school, and youth levels wit the Clarkston Chiefs having three teams. "We've been really fortunate here this goes back to when KR (legendary coach Kurt Richardson) was coach and he built this thing and got it to where it's at and fortunately we've been able to kind of maintain that at our lower levels, our numbers across the board have been very good, our varsity is looking at 80 plus kids, that's up from last year, we should be at the 40's and 50's in the JV and freshmen level and we won't know until a little bit later in the seventh and eighth grade levels (Clarkston Jr. High and Sashabaw) but we've been consistency at about 70 at those levels and the other part is that our coaching staff, we have guys that really wants to be involved, that want to be a part of the program, we don't have a lot of turnover, if you have turnover its usually circumstances that are typically out of their hands and they can't do it anymore for some reason but I think we've had to replace two or three coaches in our seven through 12 program, that continuity and having the number of kids have been key to our success and we want to make sure of it" Pintar concluded. The Wolves will score points but stopping people will be the biggest question mark.

BEST CASE: The Wolves stay healthy while the Boman twins have monster seasons on both sides of the football and Waszczenko has a career season. The offensive line is healthy and the defense has a strong year proving doubters wrong. If this happens Clarkston is a serious State title contender.

WORST CASE: Injuries to their top stars would be devastating for the Wolves. Also if Waszczenko does too much and their offensive line can't hold up that would spell trouble, there has been moments that has not held up. Also the defense gets exposed like they did against Adams. With all the potential Clarkston has this season the warning signs are there.

SAMMY OUTLOOK: There is no doubt the Wolves are going to be very good especially on offense. The defense is the warning sign as I said made very frequent. It wouldn't surprise anyone if Clarkston went unbeaten but like I said on my podcast there are some serious warning signs with the Wolves coming into the season.

LAKE ORION DRAGONS:

LAST SEASON: 6-4, 2-2 Red. Lost 34-16 to Clarkston in Division One first round. 252 points scored (25.2 ppg,) 182 points allowed (18.2 ppg.)

MAKE OR BREAK: September 5th vs Stoney Creek

STRENGTHS: Rushing Attack, Offensive Line.

CONCERNS: Mental Mindset, Pass Rush, Depth.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Brody Thompson- Quarterback/Defensive Back

BOLD PREDICTION: Jayden Borrero and James Bambard have 30 rushing touchdowns combined.

PROJECTED RECORD: 6-3, 2-2 Red. PLAYOFFS YES.

INSIGHT: The Dragons have been a postseason team seven of the last eight years but haven't made it past the district finals in each of those years and that's coming off a stretch of making the postseason after making the postseason 15 out of the last 16 years from 1998-2013 which included three Division One State Semifinal appearances and a Division One State Crown in 2010. Lake Orion has been very consistent under Coach Chris Bell and a few years under his assistant Coach John Blackstock with a ton of proven multi sport athletes that is in this program. Two losses and one play really described the Dragons season. They had a really tough loss to Saline to close the season. "I was talking to Mick McCabe after the game, he said that you came out and dominated the game and you have won it by two scores but in the red zone, we had dumb mistakes, dumb things that kept us off the board, we had them fourth and long and the quarterback scrambles (Tommy Carr) and found the tight end who is going to Georgia (Lincoln Keys) who made a great play, they score and go for two and beat us 8-7 but that's football, it was a great game" Bell said. The following week in the postseason, it was the touchdown by the Wolves Griffin Boman who went by five defensive tackles and went 50 yards to score and close the first half which sealed their fate in a 34-16 postseason loss to Clarkston which they fell to the Wolves for the second straight year. "Clarkston came in and put it to us, no excuses there they were the better team that night, they physically took it to us and ended our season" Bell added. Lake Orion played well early but struggled late last season. "You know we were senior heavy, I want to say the first eight weeks we played really well, I was really proud of our kids even though we had a couple of losses, in that Oxford game we spotted them a big lead in the first half (21-3), we made some adjustments and came up short and obviously played that game without Tristan (Hill) our starting quarterback, our young guys stepped in and did a great job keeping us in the game, that was a tough one and then the following week to come back and beat a very good Rochester Adams team and that was important, we put it together and Adams was very good so to beat Adams at home and then West Bloomfield, third quarter we're up a couple of scores and we're driving with a chance to really put the game away and we didn't finish the drive, we ended up turning the ball over on downs and they hit a big play, then we ran out of gas which was unusual, then we beat Clarkston at home, big rivalry win, homecoming game so that was a big win for us, Farmington blue collar win. It was a good year for us but we couldn't take that final step whether it's putting away West Bloomfield or putting away Saline it could have been a great year but we didn't finish" said Bell. Lake Orion needs to completely different team mentally, they have to be and possibly the scheme might have to change. "We got different kids and we have to adjust to fit our talent we have and we've done that in the offseason, which we're excited for" Bell said. The Dragons have a couple of themes this season to watch. "As coaches we grabbed onto and we stole this from AJ Hinch (Detroit Tigers manager), this is actually from our players, our players asked you know what were some of the characteristics of great teams that we had, and it's a really hard question to answer because we've had so many good teams and they're all different but the thing that kept coming back to me and it hit me was an interview with AJ Hinch said about how he coaches the Tigers and it's a motto that everything matters and so that's our motto for the kids is everything matters and we have shirts that say "Everything Matters"but really if you want to know what it takes to be great, everything, you don't take a day off, you don't get to cut corners here, if you want to be a champ, being a champion is an all time thing not a sometime thing so everything matters so you know those are things that our kids probably hear the most and you know I think as long as, you know they've passed every test, they've had a great offseason, they've worked very hard. Now it's a little bit harder when you get into practice and you know it's 90 degrees and you're practicing five hours a day and you start getting bumps and bruises, and your getting banged up, you're fighting through injuries and coaches are driving you, you know we have two and a half weeks, we got to play a game and you think about it you got established football players who have two weeks of training camp, so basically they got eight weeks of football before they go and play a game, you get to college and colleges have a full month, first they have spring football and then they have a full month to practice before they play a game and then you take high school football you have kids with the least football knowledge, the least football skill and they tell you okay you got two and half weeks, you got to get ready and go play a game so that's our challenge, we got to push them to get ready and we do a lot, that's why we do a lot during the summer but it's a lot different when you can't block and tackle and those are the skills we are working on once we put the pads on so we don't get pads until the Friday of the first week so it's really a sprint to get your kids ready to play" Bell said about preseason preparedness.

The Dragons will need more from their jet motion offense if they want to have success this season after scoring 252 points last season which is 25.2 points per game. "We were senior heavy, we return some good players, they're really excited to make a name for themselves" Bell said. Lake Orion lost TR Hill and Jackson Vasquez (running back) to graduation along with other top play makers. The quarterback spot is really interesting for Bell. He has two quarterbacks battling in Brody Thompson and Anderson Adams competing to be the starter. "We got two quarterbacks battling for the job both of them took some snaps on the varsity level last year" Bell said about his quarterback battle. Thompson has had varsity game experience as a starter (played when Hill got hurt against Troy and had two touchdowns, he started against Oxford last season) for Bell. Thompson can also play on defense in the defensive secondary. Adams has had a strong camp as has Thompson, it will be a really interesting decision to see who starts week one against Northville at Wayne State. "I don't know if we necessary have questions, we got two really good ones in Brody Thompson, has played well for us and he's been in there and then we have Anderson Adams coming so we look at we got two great options and it maybe a combination of both of them so they both do some things well, we can win with both of them, we'll let those guys battle it out in camp so we look at it, it's a blessing and a curse, we got two great ones and it's hard at times because you got to pick one and they're both great kids, great leaders so we're going to be in good shape with either one" Bell said at Media Day. The rushing attack should be very strong with it being the strength of the team. Lake Orion has Jayden Borrero, Wesley Pratt, James Bambard coming back at running back. They could be options in the passing game as well. Whoever the quarterback is will have proven pass catchers in Ryan Rocheleau, AJ Cattenacci, and Peyton Lyles coming back. They have an emerging prospect JuJu Vining to watch as he could be a wildcard for this offense. It is very interesting that each quarterback has their favorite target to throw too. (Thompson/Rocheleau-Scripps connection, Adams/Cattenacci-Oakview connection.) The lines particularly the offensive line should be a strength to go along with their rushing attack with Leo Cassell, Ryker Griffith, Jack Stiller, Brecken Powers, Lawrence Yoder, Lorenzo Polsinelli, Drew McKay, Garrett Sheffield, and Brayden Blackstock coming back. "We're big up front, we got depth on both sides of the ball" Bell added about both lines. The defense is in need of a bounce back after allowing 182 points which is 18.2 points per game. They had two really bad games against Clarkston (postseason) and West Bloomfield (allowed 49 points in a 49-41 loss.) The pass rush has been a huge problem for Bell and defensive coordinator Russ Purdy. When Lake Orion has a pass rush everything takes care of itself but if they don't that's where problems occur and big plays happen against them, this team needs to have a pass rush if they want to be successful. The Dragons have a few up and comers that could make some noise coming up as juniors. The linebackers should be solid having proven players in Alex Hensley, Luke Diliberti, and Nick Frantz coming back. The defensive secondary has some question marks despite having Max Neering, Malek Pulford coming back along with an emerging freshman in Jackson Pochmara that could move up to varsity at some point this season. Lake Orion has a foreign exchange student in Jan Ludvik handling the kicking duties. "We like to one way our guys as much as possible to keep us fresh in the league" Bell said about his roster. This is a hard working group that Bell loves to see with his teams from the past. "This is a hard working group, great group of kids, they're very close, a tight nit group, they love to practice, they love to play, the challenge is staying healthy, we worry about our depth a little bit if we get an injury and learning to be great and be great at what we do" Bell said. Lake Orion has a theme that the players have that drives them heading into the season. "There is a couple, the kids have adopted "Leave No Doubt" and "Leave No Doubt is a little arrogant, you know they say hey we want to make sure that when we leave the stadium that we left no doubt who the better team was but it also translates that when you walk off the practice field and gave it everything you had, everyday that you're working hard to get better, "Leave No Doubt" that you're doing a great job in the classroom, "Leave No Doubt" that you're representing Lake Orion as a student athlete" Bell said about the team's mantra.

Program strength will be something to watch with Lake Orion now and also in the future. "If you want to win championships you have to do it the right way" Bell said. The freshman and JV programs always have talent and are well coached with the JV program coached by Bell's nephew in former Avondale Coach Corey Bell with the numbers of the three programs in great shape. "We got good people who've been around, they know the system, and all of our kids are in good hands" Bell said. The Dragons have a strong youth program but they changed leagues to more of a tackle football and with three teams. "The youth leagues have exploded, they've been phenomenal, they not only have their JV program, they also have rookie tackle, I give John Blackstock all the credit for bringing this in, rookie tackle is where they play with seven players on the field, shorter fields but there is a lot more passing, it's a step up from flag football, there is always a progression, football is the same way. We have a monster flag football program in our district then they move into rookie tackle before they play full fledged football, I think it helps, it gets the kids more involved, there is more passing, shorter fields and that's what it should be at that age, football is meant to be fun at that age but football is hard our youth leagues have already started and it's 85 degrees and your wearing equipment, your running into people and they are blocking and tackling it's hard, you got to keep it fun" Bell said about the youth levels. They combined the middle school programs even though they get kids from three different middle schools (Oakview, Scripps, and Waldon) but they changed the program to Lake Orion Green and Lake Orion White. "We got a good crew of coaches, Dave McKay (Scripps Middle School Principal) does a really good job helping head that program, we got a bunch of good coaches that the kids are learning to learn the game of football, it's their first shot at playing for the school, we went from the three middle schools to consolidating the teams to two seventh grade and two eighth grade teams, I think that helps with numbers because you don't want to have future wide receivers having to play tackle because of the numbers, it's not bad for them but you want them to play the position going to be. We divide the teams as equal as possible, they'll be able to practice together so it's been a really good thing for us" Bell said.  Lake Orion has a really tough schedule which has Northville, Stoney Creek, Rochester, Oak Park, and Saline and some holes to fill. This should be a more focused and hungry group this season but the warning signs when it comes to mental mindset. "It's about fundamentals, ball security, tackling that's it, it's about how good we can become. We got a great group, we're more than excited more than anything" Bell said about his program.

BEST CASE: Everyone stays healthy, upbeat, hungry, and on the same page. Adams and or Thompson become stars and have a proven passing attack to go along with a strong rushing attack. The lines really perform to standards. Lake Orion has a pass rush and their secondary is very strong. This happens, the Dragons could be a State title contender.

WORST CASE: 2024 happens all over again. Quarterback hasn't been settled, injuries mount. Defense has no pass rush while the lines and secondary struggle especially the big play. This could be where trouble mounts.

SAMMY OUTLOOK: This Dragons squad reminds me of my senior year when I was in High School (2005.) When you don't have a true star and have a workman like mindset that goes well when it comes to success. They don't have true weaknesses besides depth. The emotional mindset is a concern but if they overcome this then they could make some serious noise. If there is a team that is a very dangerous team in the division, this is it.

OXFORD WILDCATS:

LAST SEASON: 7-4, 4-0 Red. Lost 29-7 to Grand Blanc in Division One district finals. 251 points scored (22.8 ppg,) 200 points allowed (18.1 ppg.)

MAKE OR BREAK: September 5th at Groves

STRENGTHS: Quarterback, Proven Pass Catchers.

CONCERNS: Both Lines, Not a lot of Experience.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Mack Dentry- Fullback/Linebacker

BOLD PREDICTION: Mack Dentry becomes a household name.

PROJECTED RECORD: 5-4, 1-3 Red. PLAYOFFS YES.

INSIGHT: 2024 was a special season for the Wildcats. They won the Red for the first time ever and upset Davison 21-14 in the first round but Oxford fell 29-7 to Grand Blanc in the district finals. "Last year was a culmination of four years of ups and downs and trials and tribulations and you know that group of kids as seniors really came through ans stepped up for our program for our program big time, just had a lot of awesome relationships with that group of kids and just excited to see them have some success" said new Wildcats coach Trevor Potts. Potts takes over for Coach Zach Line who went back into the NFL with the Denver Broncos. "There was a lot there, a lot of emotions there, this will be my fifth year in Oxford, we've been part of this community now for about 14 years, I didn't grow up here, I grew up in Rochester but this is definitely home, the number of people who have been supportive and congratulations and just I couldn't just ask for anything more and more important is our football program and families, one of the reasons that it made it easily to put my hat in the ring was I knew I would be able to keep our coaching staff together, keep the program consistent, continue with our Oxford identification and continue to build on what we're so proud of building over the past few years" Potts said about Oxford. Potts was the defensive coordinator under Line and brings experience from his days as an assistant at Adams. "Tony (Patritto) and Mark McFarland (Adams defensive coordinator) and that staff is some of my best friends, we've spent a ton of time together, it wasn't just about football it was about the people and the people there are first class people but I learned about how to treat players and organize practices and prepare and put in work and develop the right kinds of relationships with friends and families and to be honest it's similar to Oxford, we had a few assistant coaches over the years that have come from Adams to Oxford so there is a lot of similarities between the two programs but I'll forever be grateful for my time at Adams but it's a great place" Potts said about his time at Adams. Potts talked about his relationship with Line when taking this job. "Zach and I not just from a football perspective but we built a strong friendship and you know that's been the toughest part of him heading to Denver is just you know a person I would talk too almost daily or see daily, he's off doing something awesome and I couldn't be more excited for him but you know that friendship is defiantly something I will miss, he's been around a little bit this summer so it's been good to kind of catch up and check in on his family but yeah he's helped mentor me, we've spent a ton of time together in the last couple of years, building our scheme and kind of getting down to who we want to be defensively as a football team and just grateful for Zach" Potts said about Line.

The Wildcats lost a ton of talent from that team but they have a proven quarterback in three year starter Jack Hendrix coming back. Hendrix had a monster year last season and will look to have another big season. "Jack is a great baseball player, you know he's had a great baseball season but he's been putting time in with quarterback coaches, a little bit of seven on seven work and the progression for Jack as a senior is to continue as a leader, building up those skills and knowing the ins and outs of our playbook, he's spent a lot of time with Coach Grotel going through the playbook and really kind of personalizing it to him and his strengths where in the past couple of years it was just trying to teach Jack the basics and the concepts so he understood what he's doing now, now it's about him owning the offense and really setting the tone for us" Potts said about Hendrix. Hendrix has proven pass catchers in Cameron Moore and tight end Brady Hasselbring coming back. "There is probably six or seven guys that we're looking for to contribute and that includes our tight ends, so we're excited about a lot of the young guys, the junior class and to continue to help Jack along in the passing game and make big plays" Potts said about the pass catchers. The Wildcats have questions on both lines despite being bigger on the lines with Liam Samborski, Aiden Ryan, Nolan Cumbey, and Brady Pruetz coming back. The running back situation will be very interesting for Potts after losing Luke Johnson to graduation."We've had a few good ones over the past several years (Zach Line, Prescott Line, Tate Myre, and Johnson) and Luke is one of the best not just from a running back perspective but from a leadership perspective, I think we got three or four guys who we can see running the ball really well, Seth Tabert is probably the leader of that pack but you know in the end we got guys who are going to play a little bit of offense and a little bit of defense, we're still trying to figure out how they are going to contribute on both sides of the ball so I don't see somebody getting 90 percent of the carries like Luke did for us last year and grinding the way he did but I'm really excited for the guys who are running the ball and that will continue to be a part of our ID in this upcoming season" Potts said about the rushing attack. They have Seth Tabert coming back at running back along with Mack Dentry and Colin Crosby who both could make some noise as a fullback and Connor Hickey is a player to watch with his versatility. The defense has some question marks for Potts this season especially with the experience they lost from last season. The Wildcats have Hasselbring at defensive end along with Dentry and AJ Krupa at linebacker along with Moore, Keegan Pociask, Chase Cardona, Crosby, and Tabert in the defensive secondary coming back. "AJ Krupa is a hard nose linebacker, tough nosed, athletic, leader for us defensively. We're going to put a lot of weight on his shoulders as you know the middle linebackers have taken on a lot over the last several years and this will be the fifth year and he will shoulder a lot of the leadership and the communication that we're expecting out of that group" Potts said about Krupa who was honored of wearing the number 42 jersey in honor of Tate Myre this season. Oxford will be really interesting to watch this season.

Program strength looks solid especially with the program Line had developed within the youth levels and beyond. "Excitement around Oxford football is high, Zach has done a great job of laying the foundation but you know historically the one thing people know about Oxford is that they love their football, the freshman and JV numbers have been good, we've been between the 80's to 90's between those two levels. Our middle school numbers have been great, we just had our middle school staff up to go through our scheme and join us for practice. Our OJW (Oxford Junior Wildcats) program does a tremendous job building kids and building character and teaching kids the basics so yeah football is strong in Oxford" Potts concluded about program strength. The Wildcats will be going through a transition period which has to happen during the season and they have a tough schedule looming as well.

BEST CASE: The Wildcats not miss a beat. Hendrix has a Glacier Wellington like year running and throwing the football. Krupa is that star linebacker, Potts is looking for, Hasselbring has a big year catching the football, while Tabert, Dentry, and Cardona share the wealth carrying the football. The offensive line stays healthy and the defense plays their tails off. A deep postseason run could be in the future.

WORST CASE: Injuries mount especially if Hendrix, Tabert, or Krupa goes down. The lines under perform. The skill players struggle and the defense gets exposed. The schedule might be too tough for the Wildcats.

SAMMY OUTLOOK: When I spoke to Chicago Brothers Pizza owner Dan Brown, the transition period could be more smoother than most for the Wildcats. Everything starts with Jack Hendrix on the offensive side of the ball and AJ Krupa on the defensive side of the football. If either one of them gets hurt that spells trouble. The rushing attack will be the key for Coach Trevor Potts. Oxford has a lot of questions despite having a strong JV program last season but JV doesn't always translate to varsity. The Wildcats are more than capable even with a tough schedule but staying healthy is the key.

WEST BLOOMFIELD LAKERS:

LAST SEASON: 5-6, 1-3 Red. Lost 41-14 to Novi Detroit Catholic Central in Division One district finals. 341 points scored (31 ppg,) 271 points allowed (24.6 ppg.)

MAKE OR BREAK: September 12th vs Adams

STRENGTHS: Proven Pass Catchers, Defensive Secondary.

CONCERNS: Rushing Attack, Quarterback, Linebackers, Depth on Both Lines, Program Strength.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Jamal Shakesphear- Quarterback/Wide Receiver/Defensive Back

BOLD PREDICTION: Jackson Carter becomes the next great quarterback at West Bloomfield.

PROJECTED RECORD: 5-4, 0-4 Red. PLAYOFFS YES

INSIGHT: The Lakers had a really unusual 2024 despite making the postseason for the 11th straight season, there was something off about them despite making the postseason, they finished with an under 500 record in which they oddly had the sixth worst defense in the OAA last allowing 271 points which was 24.6 points per game."We weren't happy with our results, football can be tough and weird in a lot of ways, all those OAA games we led at some point and we found ways, you know if some teams like if they do things the right way, find ways to win games and clutch moments, we were kind of the opposite and that was disappointing and frustrating but, we think we kind of grown from it, learned from it, we think we're a little bit more resilient because of that" said Coach Zach Hilbers after having a really unusual 2024 season.

West Bloomfield was up and down as mentioned. They had a two quarterback system which usually never works but Hilbers made it somehow work with Beau Jackson and Jamal Shakespear which they had the third most points (341) based on points per game in the OAA (31 points per game) last season. Jackson graduated so experts would think that this will be Shakespear's job to lose but the Lakers have another quarterback in Jaxson Carver that could get a shot and make Shakespear with his athleticism and versatility to play different positions."Jamal's a great player, it's kind of unfair to label him as a quarterback, it's probably a disservice to him, he will play there and take snaps there but he'll also play running back and wide receiver, free safety, and outside backer. His strengths lie in his physically and versatility. He's taken kind of an ownership in the offseason" Hilbers said of Shakespear. The Lakers have been known for their athleticism and versatility and Hilbers mentioned them. "We got a handful of other guys returning on our team that are going to be leaders for us, have really taken ownership" Hilbers added about his team. West Bloomfield will have a ton of talent again but lessons learned beside that proven talent. "We're blessed to be very talented in the past and you know we were talented again last season and talent is nice and very helpful but it's not the only thing that determines wins and losses as I think last year showed in a lot of ways, you got to go out there and do things the right way because the sport will humble you really quickly if you don't" Hilbers said. The Lakers have Solomon Elam, Obi Duru, Christian Banks, Kam Hall, and Zach Jones coming back as proven pass catchers. Both lines look to be solid with Travis Robertson, Kamari Pittman, Joel Evans, Tristan Hunter, and Jeremiah Benson coming back but depth will be something to watch. The rushing attack looks to be the greatest question mark for Hilbers but he mentioned that Shakespear could see time at running back to go along with his other assignments. The defense has some questions coming into the season especially allowing 271 points (24.6 points per game) last season. "By the end of the year it got tough, we were banged up, really injured, that happens in this sport, it's a violent sport, we had some kids that were playing through it, we had two starting defensive lineman who were hurt including one who had surgery, played the entire year with a torn meniscus, when healthy we proved we can play against good teams and beat a lot of good teams so playing with him is nice but you got to get the job done and win eventually but he was really dinged up, played the entire year, Jeremiah Benson he could barely walk on with a high ankle sprain. You can rotate guys but you get thinner on both sides of the ball and it defiantly hurt" Hilbers added. They have Banks along with Shakespear at linebacker coming back. The defensive secondary should be the strength of West Bloomfield with proven experience in Will Espy, Malcom Ross, Josh Forest, Bryce Chandler, and Kaliq Robinson coming back and Omar Myrto handling the kicking duties but as Hilbers mentioned health will be the key to the Lakers season.

Program strength is a concern for the Lakers and will be something to watch. "Our middle schools have been kind of ever changing, our middle schools combined a few years ago and we still have a middle school program but about half the kids in middle school are playing like youth football so its really like were coaching middle school basketball with those guys to try to meet them at a young age and build relationships as fast as we can with the kids in our district and it's been beneficial for us, we've been really lucky with some talented kids in the program. Last year we were excited about our JV team and our quarterback broke his collar bone week three against Adams, kind of a fluke thing, not a lot of contact, got tripped up fell on his shoulder and snapped, that changed their season quite a bit, usually there's not too much quarterback depth in the lower levels believe it or not and it kind of had to change the way they play but Jaxson (Carver) is up with us on Varsity. He looks really good, he's going to play a lot and he's kind of eager to show everybody what he can do because he really hasn't had that opportunity yet" Hilbers said. West Bloomfield should be in the conversation but there are some questions they need to address however the Lakers should be back to where they should be this season.

BEST CASE: Everyone stays healthy, Shakespear is a star all over the field. Carver becomes the next great Lakers signal caller. The defense rises and the athletes break out to go along with a healthy line on both sides of the football. West Bloomfield will be back to their normal selves.

WORST CASE: Injuries mount, Shakespear has to play quarterback most of the season, and the defense doesn't have a bounce back year that everyone expects. Almost 2024 happens again.

SAMMY OUTLOOK: The Lakers season depends on what happens with Jamal Shakespear. If he plays quarterback, they are in trouble if anywhere else not so much. The depth on the lines are a concern for West Bloomfield. The defensive secondary is very good. It all depends with Shakespear when it comes with the Lakers.

DIVISION RECAPS/STORYLINES:

The White brings a lot of storylines this season. Groves won the division and made the Division Two State Semifinals until their own undoing cost them last season. Harper Woods made the Division Four State Semifinals falling to Goodrich in a game where they had everything that went against them. Stoney Creek made the postseason under a new coach and will look to improve in year two under their system. Rochester will be really interesting to watch. Southfield Arts and Tech should be improved but they will have some questions as well.

Groves: The Falcons had a great season but a ton of mistakes of their own undoing cost them in their 28-27 loss to Orchard Lake St. Marys in the Division Two State Semifinals last season. Groves lost a ton of experience from that team last season. It will be really interesting to see what direction they go losing all that experience and if they can keep the tradition going in Beverly Hills.

Harper Woods: The Pioneers have the balk of their team coming back from winning the Division Four crown two years ago and those who made the Division Four State Semifinals last season. The story for Harper Woods is how do they measure up against experienced big teams like those north Silver Bell Road. The Pioneers will be in the mix for the White but it will be how do they measure up particularly against those teams that are on M-24 north of Silver Bell Road.

Stoney Creek: The Cougars saw a ton of improvement under first year Coach Rick Powell even getting to the postseason. Stoney Creek will look to continue that upward motion into what could be another likely postseason appearance. There are some questions for the Cougars coming into the season especially at quarterback. The story for Stoney Creek will be keeping up that upward momentum from last season.

Rochester: The Falcons had a really controversial 22-21 overtime loss which cost them a trip to the postseason to Stoney Creek last season. Rochester wants to to continue what they've been doing heading into this season. The Falcons have been a program on the grasp of making the postseason but can they get there will be the story heading into the season.

Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors have gone through a lot in the last two years. They will be in Division Two for postseason but will they be improved will be the story. Southfield Arts and Tech had moments they looked really good and moments not so much. Improvement will be something to watch.

TOP FIVE GAMES:

1. Harper Woods at Stoney Creek: Pioneers had to survive the Cougars in Wayne County last season, could the crown be on the line in this game???

2. Stoney Creek at Rochester: Falcons haven't forgotten the overtime loss to the Cougars that kept them out of the postseason last season.

3. Groves at Harper Woods: Falcons have had the Pioneers number the last two years, could that change this season???

4. Stoney Creek at Groves: Both teams are much different than the last time they met when the Falcons won 34-6 last season.

5. Southfield Arts and Tech at Stoney Creek: This is a make or break game for the Warriors if they want to make progress.

COMBINED RECORDS WITH LAST SEASON'S SCHEDULES (NON-LEAGUE):

Harper Woods: 39-15 (42-12 Saline forfeits)

Stoney Creek: 26-26

Groves: 26-26

Southfield Arts and Tech: 22-28

Rochester: 25-27

Easiest Schedule: Stoney Creek: The Cougars have the easiest schedule on paper. They have Southfield Arts and Tech, Harper Woods, and Adams coming to Stoney Creek. The Cougars have to go to Lake Orion which is Coach Rick Powell's return to Dragon Country along with road trips to Rochester and Groves. The non conference looks very manageable with Warren Cousino, Berkley, and Ann Arbor Huron with the latter two being on the road. Stoney Creek has things evened out when it comes to competition.

Nightmare Schedule: Groves: The Falcons were really good with a ton of proven experience last season but many experts say that Groves could take a step back and for good reason. The Falcons have Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit, Rochester, and Stoney Creek coming to Beverly Hills. The rest includes West Bloomfield, Southfield Arts and Tech, Seaholm, Harper Woods, and Oxford are on the road. This is a brutal schedule with a very young team. Groves could be a team that takes a step back this season.

Team that's in Trouble: Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors had things really rough last season going 1-8 but the schedule might not get any better. Southfield Arts and Tech should be improved but they have to open with East Kentwood. I can't imagine how next season will be when they make the return trip on Interstate 96 in Kent County. They have Lowell, Harper Woods, and Groves also coming to Southfield which I can imagine when they have to make the return trip back to Kent County next season to Lowell and East Kentwood. The Warriors have to go to Chippewa Valley, West Bloomfield, Rochester, and Stoney Creek which are going to be really tough games. You never know with Pontiac. Southfield Arts and Tech could be in some trouble this season.

STONEY CREEK COUGARS:

LAST SEASON: 5-5, 2-2 White. Lost 44-14 to Adams in Division One first round. 245 points scored (24.5 ppg,) 230 points allowed (23 ppg.)

MAKE OR BREAK: September 19th vs Harper Woods

STRENGTHS: Program Strength, Both Lines, Defensive Secondary, Proven Pass Catchers.

CONCERNS: Linebackers, Rushing Attack.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Peyton Rummer- Offensive/Defensive Lineman

BOLD PREDICTION: Jake Lantzy has ten receiving touchdowns this season.

PROJECTED RECORD: 7-2, 4-0 White. PLAYOFFS YES.

INSIGHT: The Cougars made some strides toward the later half of the season winning games and being competitive in them which is something that has Coach Rick Powell looking forward to this season with Stoney Creek."We're excited to head into year two this year we have a lot of pieces coming back, guys trying to understand the overall culture and responsibilities and what it takes to be a successful football team in a football program so we're looking forward to the challenges that we have this coming season" said Powell. The overtime win over Rochester was a turning point for the Cougars to make the postseason last season. "Kind of the mentality that we wanted to put fourth the entire year, it's about being resilient and hanging our hat on and handling adversity, early on in that game we kind of had control of it and toward the middle and the end of the game Rochester started to punch us in the mouth a little bit and they were a very physical team, a very good football team and we were on the ropes a little bit, and we got it to overtime with them and got a huge play on a fourth down to even score in overtime and you know at that point it was like we got to go for two here to see what we're about and our guys responded very well" said Powell.

Program strength has really benefited the Cougars especially when you have an incoming sophomore and junior class that went 17-1 last season. "Our goal every season is to be able and play our best football you know toward the end of the season, obviously we get in the playoffs we're playing our best football at the end of the year, I think that's what we kind of did obviously did not go as planned with week ten in the playoffs (Adams) but it was a lot to learn, a lot to take in early on for our guys and they responded really well and you know soaked it with a sponge but you know they started believe in themselves and have a little bit of confidence and hit our stride midway toward the end of the season which was cool to see" said Powell. Powell mentioned having the extra week of practice in the postseason was huge for the program. "Huge, we started six sophomores and they had a lot of playing time about I think seventh up towards the end of the year, it really showed what we had when we played a really good Rochester Adams team you know toward the end of the regular season and played them really tough, I thought we played a good game, we could have punched it into the endzone, we played a really good football game so in the playoffs they were really experienced, they've been there, done that situation before, so that experience was huge for us hopefully heading into this season to know let our guys know what playoff football is all about and how you have to really transition and turn off to different level" said Powell. Stoney Creek has a ton of experience on the offensive side of the football coming back for offensive coordinator Mike Powell who is Rick's father. They have Brandon Gergics coming back at quarterback but Powell mentioned there might be two more guys that are battling for the quarterback spot."We got a good battle going on, we got a senior in Jake Matlis who played about five weeks for us last year and then junior Brendan Gergics who was the starter going into the season as a sophomore last year and he ended up getting hurt so he lost a little bit of confidence when he got hurt but he's a really good athlete. Jake Matlis is a great game manager, does a lot of good things well so we have two really different styles but both of them are rising to the occasion and competing very well" Powell said about his quarterbacks. The rushing attack will be the question mark for Powell despite having Brodie Telegadas  and Mason Black coming back. Whoever the quarterback is will have proven pass catchers in KJ Schuster, Jack Fredenburg, Nolan Welch, and Jake Lantzy coming back. The lines should be the strength of the Cougars with Brody Rummler, Brady Ricketts, Michael Gemellaro, and Roark Stephens coming back for Powell. "He's kind of taken that one straight on, put a lot of work in, he's put on 40 to 50 pounds since the end of last season and it's good weight in terms of muscle wise, get a lot of exposure at camps, competing against a lot of good athletes, offense, defensive lineman throughout his different tours and camps and whatnot, he's a rising star on the weekends at times but he's really put fourth a lot of work and really taken ownership and pride of you know, he's one of our solid guys coming back on the offensive line. I mean we got three guys, we got Brady Ricketts is another offensive tackle who is returning for us, we moved him from tight end to tackle and then our center Michael Gemellaro is our anchor down the offensive line too and we're really excited about him coming back" Powell said about Rummler and the offensive line. The defense will be something to watch especially at linebacker despite having Ryan Dazinski at outside linebacker. It is possible that Schuster could play linebacker as well with his athleticism."We're just trying to take pride and the confidence of playing fast, you know a lot of new things, a lot of new schemes going in last year, guys were a little unsure of themselves and kind of where they fit in so going into this offseason has been a huge transition, seeing guys really take ownership of it and understand what we are trying to do philosophically and I like said we got a ton of returning pieces. We lose a little bit on our defensive line with Beckeman (Spencer) and Boyco, a couple of other guys that are gone but you know linebackers are returning, everybody in the secondary is returning, we had a kid Drew Rough who we're really excited about starting for us for a couple of games but ended up getting hurt with his knee injury early to middle of the season last year so he was out all of last season, so we're really excited to have him back too" Powell mentioned about the defense. Stoney Creek also has Quinn Zezula, Lanzy, Fredenberg, Drew Rheault, and Ethan Gendich in the defensive secondary coming back. "We got a lot of two way guys coming back for us that play offensively and defensively for us, we got Rose Telegadas is going to be a junior at tailback, Mason Black is going to be a junior tailback for us. We got Jake Lantzy and Nolan Welch that are running the slot running back position and two seniors that we're really excited in Jack Fredenburg and KJ Schuster at the wide out position that we're looking forward too and a couple of young bucks mixed in there and guys hoping to get a shot but we lost a pretty good tight end for us last year, we have a sophomore junior to be in Ryan Dazinski that started at outside backer and he'll be moving over to the offensive side of the ball a little bit too so we're excited about his transition there" Powell said about several two way players.

Program strength has been really strong for Powell especially with the majority of kids coming in from Hart Middle School although they get some kids from Reuther Middle School which the majority of them go to Rochester. "We're really excited we have the junior Cougars football program running pretty strong right now we got a few guys from the Rochester Raiders organization as well, we come in there. Hart does a great job, we get about 40 to 50 athletes, our seventh and eighth grade teams, a lot of good coaches there. We did some things going this offseason where we held a coaches clinic essentially a camp where we got all the youth coaches up to the varsity coaches together, we were able to do some clinic talk with them and we're working more closely with them, so we're really excited about building those relationships, as much as we can get those guys on board the better for us but yeah we're really excited heading into this year with our incoming freshman class of 2029, really excited for. Our lower level coaches are great, they do a great job with those guys, the biggest thing we try to look at is to compete, we don't have a ton of roster size on the lower levels The freshman does a pretty good job about 40 to 45ish but I think we had 28 on JV last year, and like I said those guys are tough competitive guys that don't come off the field and just want to be football players, that's kind of what we're all about. We want guys to be good football players be tough minded whether it's physically and mentally but yeah a lot of good programs coming out there, like I said one loss between the two of them last year (freshman lost to Adams.) The JV team has not lost a game yet, now the class of 2027's so a lot of issues to fill but hopefully we can keep that rolling" Powell said. The Cougars could be a force to watch this season and beyond.

BEST CASE: Powell's team hasn't missed a beat. Rummler leads the lines while the skill players rise to the occasion. The players from the junior class continue their dominant ways and emerging stars rise. Postseason likely in reach.

WORST CASE: Injuries mount, junior class struggles, Rummler gets hurt, line struggles, quarterback situation not figured out, chemistry not there. Postseason dreams could be in jeopardy.

SAMMY OUTLOOK: The Cougars have a ton of program strength which helps. Stoney Creek has some questions but they are talented enough to make some noise. This is clearly a program that is on the rise.

HARPER WOODS PIONEERS:

LAST SEASON: 9-4, 3-1 White. Lost 28-14 to Goodrich in Division Four state semifinals. 439 points scored (33.7 ppg,) 232 points allowed (17.8 ppg.)

MAKE OR BREAK: September 19th at Stoney Creek

STRENGTHS: Proven Experience at Skill Positions and most of the Lines.

CONCERNS: Mental Mindset, Interior Defensive Line, Depth.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: DeAndre Bidden-Wide Receiver/Defensive Back

BOLD PREDICTION: Nate Rocheleau stays healthy and Dakota Guerrant doesn't play quarterback.

PROJECTED RECORD: 6-3, 3-1 White. PLAYOFFS YES.

INSIGHT: The last two years of Pioneer football has been nothing short of remarkable which included a Division Four State Crown two years ago and a really tough loss to Goodrich in the Division Four State Semifinals last season. "Last year was a good year overall, we had to struggle with injuries early on and really battle to make the playoffs. Once we were able to do that we were able to make a run late so that was a good thing for us that we got a lot of guys meaningful reps so this team coming back is a veteran team, guys have been playing a lot last year so we're looking forward to having a good season this year" said Coach Rob Oden. It has been really clear with the theme "Built on Beaconsfield" which is where Harper Woods is that they are clearly building and sustaining their success.

Harper Woods is a proven machine on both sides of the football not only in the State and in the league but also in Wayne County as well. They were fifth in points allowed defensively and offensively they had the second best offense when it came to points per game in the OAA last season. The Pioneers have Nate Rocheleau at quarterback coming back for Oden. Rocheleau is a proven pocket passer and loves to throw the ball deep but he missed some time with an ankle injury he suffered against Novi Detroit Catholic Central. Harper Woods was a much different team with Rocheleau came back in the lineup. He had over 2,100 yards passing last season and could be in line for more this season. "Nate has improved drastically this offseason, he committed himself to the weight room, he's probably 10-15 pounds heavier than previously. He's committed to running track. He was a little bit more athletic than he was previously but he's ultimately become the senior leader we've needed, first to arrive, last to leave, he's doing an outstanding job of making his teammates better overall" Oden said of Rocheleau. When Rocheleau was hurt against Novi Detroit Catholic Central as mentioned Oden went to his nephew Dakota Guerrant as his quarterback. Guerrant can play anywhere which has Oden excited to see with his nephew most likely known as a proven wide receiver/defensive back than a quarterback. "One of the ones we call him, he's a guy who can play multiple positions, he's kind of the Swiss Army knife for us. You know he has some quarterback in his background for little league in addition to wide receiver, defensive back, and some running back so with Dakota we can line him up in six or seven different positions and get some meaningful great matchups in our favor so we're looking forward to moving him around. He's continuing to work on his game, he's about 10 pounds heavier as well from the weight room and has gotten better in terms of speed so he can blow the top off of coverage's and he's added a couple of new dimensions to his game so the sky is the limit for that kid, he's had a great summer. We're going to be able to do a lot of different things with him this upcoming season" Oden added about his nephew Dakota. The Pioneers are known for their air raid attack and have a ton of proven talent but there are some players that Oden wants OAA Nation to know about as we head into the season. "Other that everybody talks about everyday, Jayden Evans our free safety is having a great offseason, great summer, he's 6.3 190 pounds he's picked up some really big offers lately. He's going to be a ball hawk back there, he started for us as a freshman last year and he'll continue to grow and develop and he'll be a name pretty soon" Oden said of Evans. Rocheleau will have a ton of proven pass catchers in DeAndre Bidden, Guerrant, Terrell Phillips, James Jefferson, Jeremy Upshaw, and AJ Henley coming back. "James Jefferson our third wide receiver, he's kind of a long ranging kid, was a role player for us last year, caught a lot of short and intermediate balls, this year he's expanded his role so I will look forward too watching him continue to grow and develop, he's a 6.3 wide receiver as well, he'll go from a serviceable backup to having a very key role in the starting offense" Oden said of Jefferson. The rushing attack took a bit of a hit with Donald Adams and Colby Bailey graduating but they have Kiante Washington, Rashad Evans, and Avery Taylor coming back which should help. "We're going to do it with a committee, it will be two sophomores and a junior back there. We're talking Rashad Evans, most likely it will be Avery Taylor and third back will be Kiante Washington. Two of the three played in the system last year and gave us some meaningful snaps but the difference is all three kids are about 6 foot, 200 pounds and not the small scat backs we've used in the past so we're looking to be more physical in the run game but we know to replace the production of Colby (Bailey) and Donald (Adams) is going to take more than just one guy so it'll probably be those three guys as our primary ball carriers out of the backfield" Oden said about his running back situation. The lines should be very good for Oden with Christian Hayes, Errol Lewis, Torian Johnson, Jeremiah McCall, and Randy Ellis coming back. They also added a transfer in Victor Polk who comes back to Harper Woods from Detroit Cass Tech this offseason. "Our edge is going to be set by sophomore Jeremiah McCall. Played a lot of reps last year as a freshman, killing it in the weight room, he's made gains over 50 pounds in the bench cleaning his squat, he's really tearing the weight room down so he'll be the next defensive lineman up in this next class, he's about 6.3, 260 pounds, he's freakishly athletic, he'll be great there and opposite him will be one of the newest additions to the team which is Victor Polk. Polk is a senior, transferred back to his neighborhood and came to us from Cass Tech (Detroit) and I think Vick comes to us with 10 offers already but he's a heck of a player, he's continuing to grow and he's picking up a ton of attention as you know as a tight end but defensive end is where he's going to make his money for the next level I believe" Oden said about McCall and Polk. The linebackers have been the strength of the defense with proven experience in Ronald Williams, Mikah Jones, Jessie White, and Taylor coming back. "Our linebacker core is solid with sophomores, we're talking Jessie White and Mikah Jones. Both were backups on last year's team but both played meaningful snaps in all 13 games. Looking forward to them being full time starters this year and they'll be the ones that kind of make our defense go. So both of them are really high academic smart kids that will be in alignment to be two great players right here in this upcoming season" Oden said of Jones and White. They have JaJuan Jones, Guerrant, Evans, Jordan McLemore, Lionel Edwards, Corey Bailey, and JeVonte Nelson in the defensive secondary coming back. "The secondary should be one of the strengths because every starter is back from previous seasons so we got a lot of experience back there but outside the household names I would say JaJuan Jones is our top defensive back, he's a four year starter for us, recently committed to Central Michigan., he'll move inside and play the nickel position, he's been a corner the last three years, heavily involved in run support and things like that so JuJuan Jones will be a guy like Lionel Edwards, our free safety, and like I said Jayden Evans our strong safety will help provide significant pass coverage for us back there so really excited them guys play together again, they've been together a year or two now and excited to see what they do this upcoming season" Oden said of his experienced defensive secondary.

Program strength looks solid for Oden especially from the youth levels and Harper Woods Middle School. "It's tremendously important, our middle school program has been the strength of our program since we got there eight years ago (Oden was at Detroit East English Village Prep prior to coming to Harper Woods) we are now coaching kids on our high school varsity team, I think 80 percent of my team played from sixth grade for us so they are super familiar with the program and the success we're having with seven on seven this summer is showing a lot of that, they've been running this system for three four, some five years so we're able to get better in several areas because we've had kids that are really familiar with the system that we're running so our junior varsity program is our feeder system. We look forward to those guys to take the next step by the end of the year and be ready to come up and give us some serviceable time on varsity so our approach is to always build the program from the youth level up so that's the kind of what we've always been doing, their schedules are always challenging as well so we look forward working with those guys once they get to us so we spent a lot of guys and practicing in the offseason. My varsity staff coaching, developing them, younger staff so when they get to us there will be some familiarity with those guys so both levels junior varsity and middle schools they are doing extremely well, we're looking forward to coaching some of those kids coming this season" Oden said. Harper Woods should be a force again this season and could be in line for another deep postseason run in Division Four.

BEST CASE: Everyone stays healthy especially Rocheleau who has a career year in passing yards. Guerrant has another monster season. Bidden and others become stars. Pioneers are a serious Division Four State title contender.

WORST CASE: Injuries mount, Rocheleau gets hurt again, Guerrant struggles, lines struggle, others struggle. Postseason dreams could be in jeopardy if this scenario comes out.

SAMMY OUTLOOK: The Pioneers have a ton of upside and a great chance to get the Division Four State Crown back to Beaconsfield Street. Harper Woods has a tough schedule and a schedule that is juicy for postseason points. The Pioneers need to stay the course and if they do and stay healthy this is a dangerous team come postseason time.

ROCHESTER FALCONS:

LAST SEASON: 4-5, 1-3 White. No postseason. 225 points scored (25 ppg,) 193 points allowed (21.4 ppg.)

MAKE OR BREAK: September 19th at Groves

STRENGTHS: Both Lines, Rushing Attack, Quarterback, Linebackers.

CONCERNS: Defensive Secondary, Depth, Program Strength.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Amarie Harris- Offensive/Defensive Lineman

BOLD PREDICTION: Devin Grabke has a 1,000 rushing yard season.

PROJECTED RECORD: 5-4, 2-2 White. PLAYOFFS YES.

INSIGHT: It was sort of like the "Game of Thrones" or inches that decided the Falcons fate last season. "Last year we were 4-5 and that's not what we wanted to do in our four wins we played really well in our five losses we played really well, we just had some turnovers and little things here and there that kind of cost us like the Adams game in week two, it was 7-0 at half and 14-0 after three quarters so defensively we played well but offensively we're playing with a young quarterback and he kind of had to get his feet wet and then we played Oxford tough (lost 28-10,) we had a couple of turnovers" said Coach Erik Vernon. It was one yard that separated the Falcons from the postseason. It was in overtime against arch rival Stoney Creek where Cougars running back Sam Fogler ran the ball on a two point attempt and was stopped by numerous Rochester defenders. The officials deemed Fogler got into the endzone while Vernon argued that Fogler was stopped before he got into the endzone but it wasn't meant to be as the officials deemed Fogler got into the endzone and Stoney Creek won 22-21 in week six which was huge in Stoney Creek making the postseason. "That was a tough one for us because it literally came down to the last play, it could have gone either way and not rehash a whole lot of that and I'll leave it at that and unfortunately we didn't rebound the following week like we wanted too (Harper Woods) and that one play was the difference of making the playoffs and not making the playoffs and our goal this year is to try to get those little things right not getting into those big games against those powerhouse OAA teams. We want to make sure that we're taking care of the football and doing those little things that we needed to do to have the results we want for sure" said Vernon about last season.

Many fans in Rochester felt that call cost the Falcons a trip to the postseason. The Falcons should have some motivation heading into this season along with a ton of proven multi sport athletes in the school this season. "We lost a lot of seniors but we have a lot of seniors coming back, we're up over 30 seniors, they're excited to make this their team this year, their legacy a lot of guys are excited and you know going back to where we coached was during their JV year as sophomores they did their jobs really well, they understood their roles, they understood their jobs, that team did a good job with the little things, they've seen it, they want to transition it over here to now it's their opportunity to show as a senior class what they can do, they've been working really hard, they've been doing a really good job with the little things that we talked about correctly so I'm excited for them" Vernon said about his seniors. Rochester has their quarterback in Matt Dyki coming back. Dyki has really improved from his freshman season and will look to have a strong bounce back year for the Falcons. "He got so much better as the year went on and the fact he was able to play the schedule we played, he had some tough games, we obliviously played some of the best teams in the state but it was a learning experience for him and the thing about him is that he's just a natural athlete, he knows the game of football really well, if he makes a mistake he'll come to the sideline and he'll right away he'll be able to explain what he saw, what he was doing and that shows his football IQ and going into his sophomore year he's put on some weight, we'll be able to use him in the running game, and he's going to have the opportunity to be a nice little duel threat quarterback so we're really excited for him" Vernon said about Dyki. Rochester has two proven running backs in Anderson Wilson and Devin Grabke among others coming back for Vernon. "Last year we had Jack Lower he was a workhorse but he started to share carries with Devin Grabke, he's a huge big play threat for us, he's going to play a lot of running back and he could play wide receiver. My running back room I'm really excited for, we have a junior coming in in Blake Chicowski who is a good baseball player, he's put on a lot of weight, big fast kid, hoping like that thunder and lightning type duo and we have a senior in Mark Jones, very physically gifted kid. We got some home run talent in the running back room in Devin and we're looking forward to see what he can do" Vernon said about his running backs especially Grabke. Dyki should have an improved pass catching group in Cole Murphy, Andrew Smith, Jacob Scott, and Nate Tandy coming back which has Vernon excited about this group. The lines should be the strength of both the offense and defense with Amarie Harris, Marcus Abram, Zoran Khawaja, Mark Jones, and Matthew Morrow coming back. "Marcus is leading our offensive line, he's a junior, he played really well on the defensive line, he'll be playing on the offensive line, he's a physical football player, does a great job with that and our senior class we got a couple of guys that can handle size and others that are smaller but faster off the ball, they've played in this run block system for a couple of years now, they know who they have to block, they understand getting a hat on hat I'm looking forward to that group kind of stepping up and there are still some positions that people are fighting for and they've had some good summers so it's exciting to see. One thing we're going to have is flexibility, we're going to play multiple positions across the line that's going to certainly help us if you know we unfortunately have injuries but just that depth and ability to have guys that play multiple positions, but there is not a lot of experience coming back other than Marcus, uh like Zoran Khawaja he got some reps at the end of the year so he's going to come up for us, we're losing some starters on the line so we're hoping for guys to step up" Vernon said. The linebackers should be solid with proven experience in Caiden Webb, Joe LaNeire, Tanner Scott, Jack Pokorny, and Caiden Siebort coming back. The Falcons should be improved for Vernon having proven and up and coming players in Tandy, Anthony Atooma, and Hudson Blake in the defensive secondary coming back. Rochester has a ton of proven experience on defense which excites Vernon heading into the season. They have Uzair Naseer handling the kicking duties. "Friday nights matter and it's awesome" Vernon said.

Program strength will be something to watch with the Falcons this season. Rochester relies on their middle school feeder programs at Reuther and West Middle Schools (some go to Adams) along with the Rochester Raiders youth football program. "When we look at the youth program in this city everything runs through the Rochester Raiders youth league, that's one of the premiere youth program in the state, we get a couple of kids, we get the kids that we get, we had two freshman that played on varsity for us last year, we don't get quite those kids as Adams and Stoney Creek but the ones we get do a great job for us. We split West with Adams and Reuther is ours and Reuther is kind of having a coaching turnover trying to get that one solidified but that's something that's out of our control when it comes to finding guys to get that job and whatever and we're hoping to get some coaches down there kind of up and running with that stuff. I've had the same freshman coaches for over a decade now, they've done a fantastic job of doing the same stuff we do and implementing them on how to teach the game of football. Our JV staff this was done before COVID, we decided to conjoin the JV and varsity program so we practice them together so the JV get coaching reps from the varsity guys, that's helped us immensely because that's helped our JV guys get ready for varsity football, it's probably one of the best things we've done which is made us more consistent we used to be. We've been pretty consistent putting good teams and competitive teams on the field, number wise we got about 60 varsity kids, I have about 25-30 sophomores and I'll have another 35 freshman so that's a good number for the program and a testament to all the other kids in the program, seniors doe a great job. We have great kids that come through the program are just fantastic people and that's the same for other programs but I think the character of our kids, culture, program, our school really does a good job to lead the culture of the program and the numbers of program strength that is for sure" Vernon concluded. The Falcons are more than capable of a postseason run, they just have to get there.

BEST CASE: The Falcons learned from last season's loss to Stoney Creek and won two straight games to close out the season. That momentum continues into this season and they get on a roll. Dyki becomes a star and Rochester shocks the state and creates balance on both sides of the football. Postseason dreams could be a reality.

WORST CASE: The Falcons lose all momentum from the final two games of the season and struggle to maintain. The concerns really struggle and under perform or get hurt. Postseason dreams would be in jeopardy.

SAMMY OUTLOOK: The Falcons are a sleeping giant, they have a lot of proven experience coming back. The secondary has some questions but there are a ton of strengths to watch for. Rochester could be a team that makes a ton of noise this season. People say they are a dark horse, there is a good reason why.

GROVES FALCONS:

LAST SEASON: 12-1, 4-0 White. Lost 28-27 to Orchard Lake St. Marys in Division Two state semifinals. 461 points scored (35.4 ppg,) 138 points allowed (10.6 ppg.)

MAKE OR BREAK: August 29th vs Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit

STRENGTHS: Both Lines, Proven Pass Catchers.

CONCERNS: Rushing Attack, Linebackers, Not a lot of Experience.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: LaVelle Shannon-Quarterback

BOLD PREDICTION: LaVelle Shannon throws for 15 touchdowns this season.

PROJECTED RECORD: 2-7, 1-3 White. PLAYOFFS NO.

INSIGHT: The Falcons had everything in front of them and a chance to make their first state title game in school history. They had Ford Field in their grasp but very questionable play calling and decision making cost Groves in their 28-27 Division Two State Semifinal loss to Orchard Lake St. Marys falling to 0-5 in those games. "It was one of those magical years, had some really good players, some really good younger players and you know kind of that stuff that aligns, we didn't have a lot of injuries so you know sometimes you got to have luck to get down there, to get past districts. You got to have a little bit of luck going for you and we did so that was a fantastic year and you know a little bitter disappointment at the end there (losing to Orchard Lake St. Marys) I thought we had a great chance to get to the finals but we got to try to move on and focus on this year" said Coach Brendan Flaherty about last season. Flaherty made mention he wants to see more Falcon stickers in Beverly Hills and not the Warriors stickers like they have at Birmingham Brother Rice. "It's like a quarter of a century with one coach getting to know our philosophy, our mantra, when I got started it was trying to make football important, the guy before me, Coach McDougal who's my coach, so it's been 30 years of trying to make football important in Beverly Hills and Birmingham and it's not easy because we're a country club community. Swimming is huge, swimming is the thing, tennis, golf that whole thing so making football important at Groves is a challenge but I think we're swaying the way and making football important and trying to take some people along for the ride. When I first started the whole community, I come around, I drive around, and walk around the community and all I can see are these Warrior helmets stickers on people's cars (Birmingham Brother Rice) and that's why I just make it a policy to hand out Groves Falcons stickers, I want to cover up those Warrior stickers, those Maple stickers and just do it, for me it's one person at a time, just trying to be positive force in our community" Flaherty said about being a positive force in the community.

The Falcons will be a completely different team for Flaherty this season after leading the OAA in points scored and points against. Groves will have LaVelle Shannon at quarterback coming back. Shannon was the backup last season. "LaVelle Shannon is our quarterback, he's QB1, he's an extremely gifted guy immense upside talent, we've been fortunate to have good quarterbacks ahead of him (Caden Hardy and Ryan Counts) so he hasn't had a ton of starting experience but he is extremely gifted, eager you know a program guy, he's ready to play, he's waited his turn, he's ready to shine and he's pretty good, he's got a rocket of an arm and he's got some good athletic ability to run the ball so we're going to highlight him in a lot of things so he's pretty good, we're excited for him and I think more importantly since the first year he's kind of taken over the team and that leadership mantel and we're expecting good things from him" Flaherty said about Shannon. If Shannon struggles or gets hurt Flaherty has a solid backup in Groves Boys Basketball Coach Marc West's son Michael West. "Michael is a junior he's a three sport player, his dad is our basketball coach, coaches kid so if anything happens with LaVelle, Michael's right there so we feel really good about our quarterback room" Flaherty added. Shannon will have to rely on his arm but he will have proven pass catchers in Rylie Armbrustmaker, Fred Sorenson, Mike McCain, Jordan Thomas, Blake Riggins, Adrian Bryant, and Malik Cipullo, along with Jackson Tipton at tight end coming back. The rushing attack has to be replaced after their two top running backs graduated. Flaherty will look to Jeremiah Whitley be the top running back coming back. "We're still dinosaurs, we're an eye formation football and we're going to attempt to run the football and get after you so it really doesn't matter who it is, this is the stuff we do and people who play us know this is what they do so I think it's going to be okay, Jeremiah Whitley is pretty good, Carter Anderson is another running back. I think having two steady backs in an I formation team is smart and good, we got two guys and Dominic Taylor is a three year starter as well, he'll run the ball as well so we got three solid guys that we can put the ball in their hands and Elena Lewis is a sophomore for us so we feel good about the guys running the ball for us" said Flaherty. Both lines should be solid despite losing Avery Gach (Michigan) to graduation. They have Leland Swanson, Josh Hammonds, Carter Hladki, Mattia Andriano, Henry Roberts, Cooper Clark, Ezra Brown, and Kameron Smith coming back. "We got some guys up front but we got to fill some holes as well" Flaherty added. The defense should be the storyline to watch with Groves having to replace their linebackers. They could move Hladki to linebacker "I think it starts with us, how we think is stopping the run and being able to run the football so those two things are kind of like what we want to do" Flaherty added. He mentioned Carter Lackey and Taylor being two guys that can help on this side of the football. "Carter Lackey and Dominic Taylor are two linebackers, Dom can play defensive end, we're seeing him as a linebacker maybe a defensive end, maybe as a hybrid trying to highlight him so we're excited about them and then Josh and Mattis are going to play defensive tackle so stopping the run with those guys are going to be important. Two guys Zane Webb and Miles Tilman are seniors for us, not starters for us last year but they will be starters this year, they've had excellent summers and offseason so we're ready to you know get some guys who haven't played, they've played a bunch because we had some blowout games last year so they've played a lot but they're kind of looking to step up and take the mantle of leadership The Falcons have Myles Tillman, Dane Zef, Khamari Early, Sherman Christian, McCain, Martin Lavelle, and Armbrustmaker in the defensive secondary coming back. "So if we stop the run we'll be okay" Flaherty said about his defense.

Program strength is a concern for the Falcons which is something to watch especially with the youth and Middle School levels at Berkshere which is the main feeder middle school in Birmingham and Beverly Hills. "I think the Birmingham Patriots is our youth team so it starts with the youth, it's not to say a guy can be a successful player but again this is my 25th year as a head coach so it's hard to believe looking in the mirror. When I first started we didn't have youth football, we had about ten guys, sometimes more, I had to teach them put the pads in the pants and how to put shoulder pads and helmet because they never played football before so you could imagine going from my years like shoot at least a third of your team has never played football before to now most guys have played multiple years of football and have that experience, so our youth program is the Birmingham Patriots and has really built the foundation of our program, we've been kind of sticklers with it there, we want guys going to Groves or Seaholm, we don't want to be training our youth guys to go somewhere else particularly a private school so we pay particularly attention who's on our youth teams and putting our resources to those youth coaches and the youth players and really making that important and the understanding. The buzz word is culture but if you can get a parent trained in the fourth grade, they're like no Labor Day is not a holiday, that's a football weekend, football starts way before Labor Day so that's kind of been the foundation for us, you gain a lot of experience and I've been fortunate to gain experience with that and the number of guys on my staff have been with me, the majority of my staff has been with me 10 years or longer and some are former players so that they know the expectations at Groves so that's helped us really blossom" Flaherty added. The Junior Varsity and freshman programs have been a strength along with the chemistry throughout the program. "Dave Mason is our JV Coach and Nick Leon and Juan Hammonds those guys take the JV and Sean Johnson those guys are like overqualified, those guys are varsity level coaches but they embrace their role like everything about preparing the boys for Friday night, so they do a great job at getting the boys ready and have had great success and building the fundamentals and the building blocks and the competitiveness and they do a great job because our JV is the guys for us, our program, the JV is the guys that get short changed, we try to keep our freshmen together, Bill Bold is our freshman coach, does an outstanding job, Storm Mullen helps out down there, Chuck Ding, and Charlie Little, and Aaron Sherman those guys coach our freshman and like they want to keep our freshman together as long as they can. If there is a freshman that can start on the varsity we move them up but that rarely happens, so we keep those freshman guys together, grow together, win together so we'll flop if our offensive coaches are coaching with the varsity and our defensive guys would coach individuals at the lower levels so our 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders are getting some kind of exposure with our varsity coaches" Flaherty said. The middle school program is coached by Brian Ballridge and Flaherty mentioned the middle school program is just as important to the program. "I call him our dean of culture, he coached our freshman for 10 years, he had to step in and coach our middle school program last year because they didn't have somebody so our middle school program getting them exposed to football with the Patriots or Berkshere, getting guys to play football there is no substitute for experience, it's extremely important to us" Flaherty concluded about the middle school program in Birmingham and Beverly Hills.

BEST CASE: The newcomers exceed expectations and Groves doesn't miss a beat. Shannon performs well at quarterback, they find a running back and pass catchers exceed expectations, the lines are back to standard, and the secondary is also back to standard as well.

WORST CASE: The Falcons take a step back, Shannon struggles, the lines struggle, the secondary gets exposed, the rushing attack struggles. Injuries mount and lack of depth shows.

SAMMY OUTLOOK: The Falcons have some questions after losing a ton of talent. Groves has a tough schedule as well. There are a lot of reasons why they could take a step back. This is a Coach Flaherty team and he'll get the best out of them but there are so many questions with the Falcons this season.

SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH WARRIORS:

LAST SEASON: 2-7, 0-4 White. No postseason. 124 points scored (13.7 ppg,) 282 points allowed (31.3 ppg.)

MAKE OR BREAK: August 29th vs East Kentwood

STRENGTHS: Quarterback, Rushing Attack.

CONCERNS: Mental Mindset, Defense, Depth.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Jeremy Porter- Quarterback

BOLD PREDICTION: Timothy Garr has 500 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns this season.

PROJECTED RECORD: 1-8, 0-4 White. PLAYOFFS NO.

INSIGHT: The Warriors had a ton of success under Coach Aaron Marshall which ended up winning the Division One State crown over Belleville in 2023. It was a really challenging season for Southfield Arts and Tech. They lost their head coach (Aaron Marshall-Birmingham Brother Rice) and the majority from that team graduated. It was going to be a challenge for new coach Keith McKenzie who came in late and the remaining members from that State Championship team. The Warriors won their first game (Flint Beecher 46-0) however things went south real quick losing seven straight games but Southfield Arts and Tech earned a hard fought 26-22 win over Detroit Renaissance to finish the year strong last season. McKenzie who is the Warriors third coach in six years believes that his team will be in line for a much better season. ""Last season was kind of a scramble, when I got in it was kind of a late start, everything was kind of a scramble trying to get the coaching staff together trying to get the team together getting some kind of comradery, it was just a whirlwind, a lot of screaming, a lot of hollering, trying to get things done, it was a tough year trying to implement your philosophy into your players it takes time and not to have that time with those players last season it was tough" McKenzie said The Warriors them is "One Mind, One Mission" which is something Southfield Arts and Tech is looking for after a rough year last season. "Our theme is one mind, one mission, everybody has got to have the same mindset going out want to be a dominant football player being mentally ready, being physically ready, one mind, and one mission and there's and I tell those guys our mission is to go to the State Championship so the mission never changes every year, we want to go to Ford Field so that's the mission so you know one mind, that's the mission, it's a whole lot into the mission, there is the start, you got the beginning, and an end to the mission and right now we're getting ready for the last phases of our mission, we had the start, we've been in the weight room since December, we've been going strong on Fridays a week working out, these guys have been doing different types of speed and explosion training during that time and you know just to see the guys build and they understand that this is just part of the mission, this is how you got to prepare ourself for the mission so right now I think we've had a great offseason, we've had a lot of guys participating, we've had anywhere from 30 to 40 kids every day in the weight room so it was good to see the guys buy into my vision and the mission we have in store, our mantra is going to be "One Mind, One Mission" McKenzie said.

The Warriors had the fifth worst offense and third most points allowed in the OAA last season. A lot of that was the transition period that the Warriors had to go through last season. "We were able to get through it, got two wins, we really thought we should of had three, we couldn't close the deal against a team we were playing, it was starting to come together toward the end, it was tough last year I was trying to get to know the kids and the kids were trying to get to know me and at the same time they were having tremendous success from the last coaching staff and we're coming in trying to explain to those kids that's on the varsity saying that you didn't play on that team, you were on the JV because there were some guys that were on the JV the year they won it, yeah you won a State title but you weren't on that field when the championship was won so we're starting over and you have to have your own identity and you have to do it yourself, I'm not going to say it was a struggle it was trying to get it to their heads that this is their team now and they have to establish their culture and they have to go out there and do it" McKenzie added. The Warriors have the majority of their team coming back from last season with  Jeremy Porter coming back at quarterback for offensive coordinator Michael Smith. Smith before coming to Southfield Arts and Tech was at West Bloomfield under then Coach Ron Bellamy and current Coach Zach Hilbers. Porter had an up and down year as a passer and a runner last season and will look to have a much better year this season. The rushing attack will be key for Smith like last season. They have Timothy Garr at running back coming back. Garr was used in rushing and catching passes in the RPO (Run-Pass-Option) offense last season. Porter will have pass catchers Arturo Martin, Malcolm Pryor, Tre'Vion Williams, and Kevin Blair coming back along with new comers in Jaden Ivey. to watch. "We got a slew of guys that have played last year and I've seen a lot of them getting better, physically stronger, and improvement in your football intelligence, guys like a Torian Davis and a Jadin Richdall that's gotten stronger and his mindset has changed for an o lineman that struggled a little bit, this year he's stepping into the forefront and he's playing really well" McKenzie said about two of his sophomores becoming juniors this season. The lines were experienced last season but they won't have as much experience as in years past but they have Danyel Hardin, Caleb Lane, Jeffery Nicholson, Jadan Richdall, Chene Thompson, Adriean Reading, Rashad Taylor and Marcus Boler coming back. "You know guys just trying to get the consistency and some of the guys that played last year, still working on our consistency with our quarterback (Porter) and running back (Garr) but we have a good group of guys coming back and I'm excited about how these guys went offseason and how they performed in the offseason and we're just staring to gel as a team and they're coming together and they're buying into my philosophy, it's really exciting to see that right now" McKenzie added. The defense was really bad allowing 282 points (31.3 points per game) which was third worst in the OAA last season. This is where McKenzie needs to fix if the Warriors want to make any in roads this season. They should be much improved with the system and scheme this season. Southfield Arts and Tech has Kenneth Brooks and Keith McKenzie at linebacker along with Bryce Finch, Martin, Mark Reid, Taurean Davis, and Williams in the defensive secondary coming back. Special teams was a big problem for the Warriors and it could be again with the schedule but special teams brings an opportunity for those who want to make some noise. "Everyone has something to prove, I don't know who is going to step up and who is going to blossom and shock a lot of people, that's going to be determined on the football field but it's a lot of guys that are doing really well, I don't have kids that have transferred in or a top notch eighth grader who is coming into the school to be coming to join the team so I don't have anything like that that is going on. We just got a lot of hard work and grind that we've been putting in and just trying to improve on the guys that is here" McKenzie added. Southfield Arts and Tech should be an improved team this season.

Program strength is a concern for McKenzie despite having a very strong youth level program with the Southfield Falcons but not all of those kids go to Southfield. The middle school program has been a real big concern which McKenzie is trying to keep kids from leaving Southfield and not go to other schools in which kids have done in the past go to other districts in Oakland and Wayne Counties. "It's very important in Southfield, you got to reach out to the youth teams, I didn't think when I left college I'd still be recruiting like this but you still got to go out and talk to these kids that's in your district and you want to keep them in your district, Southfield we got a nice sized district and we lose kids to Orchard Lake (St. Marys), Groves, or West B (West Bloomfield), they leave our middle school and go there and so our biggest deal is to try and keep them in our school district and do my best to keep those kids in our school district and it's tough because those programs they want to go to to be a part of are good football programs but at the same time I tell the kids you know, if you stay here, you have a better opportunity because you grew somewhere else and you got to go out and compete against people that you're not familiar with, I come to Southfield because we all families, it's a family atmosphere so you stay here, your friends will be here, your family will be around, so I try to sell them on that sense but it's tough with the youth leagues and everything because you got to try to keep the kids home, try to keep them from wanting to entice some of the kids to come play here especially the Oakland County kids because when we talk about the youth leagues a lot of them are from all over, Wayne County, Oakland County and the way we're structured in Southfield it's sort of an open district when it comes to Oakland County, you know anyone that's an eighth grader going into the ninth grade anywhere in Oakland County can come to Southfield but once you become a sophomore or like that or your already a ninth grader you have to be in district and that doesn't apply in Wayne County so you got rules to ably by admission rules and things like that, you try to make it best to sell your positivity, entice the kids to first stay in the school district and stay here and then fight off the other schools from poaching our kids from out of school district." McKenzie said. School has been really important to McKenzie and academics has been the top priory at Southfield Arts and Tech. "It's important to me, just like some kids they aren't fans of school but at Southfield it's deeper than that, high school is really preparing you for the basics skills that you need, the reading, the writing, adding the math, that's the basic comprehension to push in life, now if you go to college you develop a different set of skills in a specialty area but academics is important because I want those guys to understand that you know smart football players are the best football players, you have to have a minimal of a 2.0 to play here, some schools use the state standards which is crazy that a 1.6 would be able to play is crazy but here at Southfield we're pushing the guys because everyone is not going to the NFL (National Football League), everyone might not make it to college and play sports uh play football as they want to because you know it's a numbers game when it comes to college football and the NFL and the higher you go up the smaller the numbers get and when you talk about education and your academics, you can still go to school, you can use the lessons you use from football, the mental toughness, the grit, the attention to detail those type of skills you develop from football, you can use that in academic life going to college and preparing for life after the game, I try to preach that to the guys as much as I can that your football expiration date will come to fruition, just like a carton of milk you go in there, a gallon of milk it has a date where it's going to go bad and everyone has a day when their football expiration and you don't know when it is, is a bunch of question marks, it will come and you're going to have to be ready for life after the game and academics is a huge part of that, making sure that you ready for life after football so we really stress it, we have study table, we have tutoring so we have a lot of things that help the kids out here in Southfield to make sure they are strong with their academics" McKenzie concluded. The Warriors should be improved but they have a tough schedule looming so it will be really interesting to watch.

BEST CASE: The Warriors see progress, find a quarterback, develop depth, and the defense performs to their regular standards which would lead to wins.

WORST CASE: The Warriors don't have a quarterback, no pass rush, no offensive line while the defense under performs and bad habits return along with the mental mindset is shot.

SAMMY OUTLOOK: The Warriors have a tough schedule in a second year of a rebuild. They should be better but they need to prove it. Program strength is something to watch with Southfield Arts and Tech. It could be a very challenging year for the Warriors.
