Here are the week seven thoughts.
Waterford Kettering: The Captains won their first game of the season winning on their homecoming 14-0 over Livonia Clarencville. The defense which has been torched all season and they've gone through a coaching change mid season as well. It's a big win for Waterford Kettering and hopefully they can turn things around soon.
Waterford Mott: The Corsairs bounced back in a big way winning 38-24 over South Lyon East keeping their postseason hopes alive. Waterford Mott got touchdowns from their proven experience players and it showed in their game against the Cougars. The Corsairs hopefully can get into the postseason but they might need some help unless they get that Walled Lake Northern thing resolved.
Pontiac: The Phoenix have been making progress in what is a very difficult season falling 40-0 to Royal Oak at home on Friday night. Pontiac has made a lot of progress despite the record but there is still a ways to go for Coach Wendall Jefferson if they want to turn things around.
Avondale: The Yellow Jackets are really struggling to adjust to Coach Jim Carlisle's system. Avondale fell 27-8 at Hurley Field on Friday night. Avondale defensively has really struggled and it has crept over to the offensive side of the football. It's going to take some time for Carlisle to get his system into the lower and youth levels but it's a struggle right now for the Yellow Jackets that is for sure.
Berkley: The Bears have turned things around in a dominating 27-8 win over Avondale on Friday night. Berkley has been very good defensively and it's shown in the last two games. The Bears could be a team that might be thinking postseason dreams if things go right.
Royal Oak: The Ravens are still the ultimate Scooby Doo team and it showed in a 40-0 win over Pontiac. Royal Oak has four wins which is surprising to where this program has been in the past. It looks like things are starting to turn around for Coach Colin Campbell and the Ravens.
Ferndale: The Eagles had a very disappointing 15-12 loss to River Rouge. Ferndale's defense played well but it was their offense that really let them down in this game. It's a tough loss for Coach Donovan Jackson and his team and it's doesn't any easier with a trip to Harper Woods looming.
Troy: The Colts are in a very rough spot after a 42-7 loss to Seaholm on homecoming night. The defense has allowed 149 points in the last four games. This is something Coach Chris Frasier and Troy needs to fix if they want to turn things around and fast.
Troy Athens: The Red Hawks played well on Friday night taking a 28-24 lead into the end of the fourth quarter but Troy Athens defense could not hold and they allowed a touchdown in the fourth quarter falling 31-28 to Oxford. The Red Hawks have been making progress especially offensively, it's defensively is where they need to shore some things. Troy Athens has a big game looming with arch rival Troy next week.
Bloomfield Hills: The Black Hawks are just going through it right now after falling 49-21 to Farmington on Friday night. Bloomfield Hills is going through a transition period which has to happen during the season. The defense has been an issue all season for the Black Hawks. The players aren't giving up for Coach Scott Merchant, it's a transition period that has to happen as mentioned.
Farmington: The Falcons have been a different team since their 20-18 loss to Holly winning 49-21 over Bloomfield Hills on Friday night. We will know a lot about Farmington when they head to Clarkston to play the Wolves next week.
North Farmington: The Raiders have seemed to turn things around with a huge 21-6 win over Oak Park. North Farmington has played balanced football and have been playing well lately. The Raiders are in a good spot heading into the postseason.
Seaholm: The Maples bounced back snapping a two game losing streak with a 42-7 win over Troy on Friday night. Seaholm played balanced football which is what they need going forward. The schedule doesn't get any easier for Coach Jim DeWald which has Adams and Groves looming.
Oak Park: The Knights seen their postseason hopes take a hit with a 21-6 loss to North Farmington on Friday night. The offense has struggled which is why were they are at right now despite having all the experience at the skill positions. Oak Park has been really competitive. It's a tough spot for Coach Greg Carter and the Knights right now.
Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors struggled on the defensive side of the football in a stunning 10-0 loss to Rochester on Friday night. The defense held an experienced Falcons offense to 10 points but couldn't muster anything against Rochester's defense. The Warriors are making progress which is a good thing heading into the future.
Groves: The Falcons likely earned their way back to the postseason winning 29-12 over Stoney Creek on Friday night. Groves young lions played like lions shutting down the potent Stoney Creek rushing attack and exposed their defense. The Falcons are clicking on all cylinders and gaining confidence as we speak.
Stoney Creek: The Cougars were shell shocked by Groves falling 29-12 on Friday night. Stoney Creek had trouble on both sides of the football which was very unusual especially for a program that has been very good all season on both sides of the football. The Cougars need to get some things figured out especially defensively where they have allowed 55 points in the last two weeks, that's not a good sign heading into the postseason.
Rochester: The Falcons snapped a painful losing streak by winning 10-0 over Southfield Arts and Tech on Friday night. The offense has been an issue for Rochester which with an experienced quarterback in Matt Dykie and a proven wide receiver in Nate Tandy was only held to 10 points. This Falcons team has been really hard to figure out all season with the numbers on both sides of the football.
Harper Woods: The Pioneers earned a monster victory in Saline winning 41-32 over the Hornets. Dakota Guerrant was the story. He had three total touchdowns against a Saline defense that is very good. The Pioneers were up 28-10 at one point but the Hornets came back making the score 34-32 at one point before Guerrant's heroics. This is a big win for Coach Rob Oden and Harper Woods to go into Saline and win. Division Four is going through Beaconsfield Street, especially after beating Clarkston and Saline, says a lot.
Adams: The Highlanders had a lot of distractions that went against them and it almost bit them. Adams was coming off an emotional 26-20 win at Stoney Creek last week but they had a lot of trouble with Lake Orion winning 29-27 on Friday night. The Highlanders needed two two point conversions and benefited from a very controversial call which ended up being a difference in the game. The Adams defense is a major concern heading into the postseason despite having the experience and Ryland Watters. The defense needs to be addressed before the postseason comes for the Highlanders.
Clarkston: The Wolves exploded in the second half outscoring West Bloomfield 28-3 and earning a 38-10 win in the Swamp winning for the first time since 2013 which they won the Division One State crown. Clarkston took advantage of several Lakers mistakes and the Boman brothers combined for five touchdowns. It is possible that these two teams could meet again in the first round of the postseason but it would be at Clarkston. The Wolves are in a good spot both now and into the future.
West Bloomfield: The Lakers defense has been a big problem in the last two weeks and it showed its ugly head especially in the second half in a 38-10 loss to Clarkston in the Swamp on homecoming night. West Bloomfield has allowed 72 points in the last two weeks after being really good in the last five weeks. If I'm Coach Zack Hilbers this is where they need to get fixed before they head into the postseason.
Oxford: The Wildcats had three close games in three weeks but they've won all of them. Oxford had to score a fourth quarter touchdown and survived 31-28 on Friday night against Troy Athens avoiding what would have been a major upset. The defense is a major concern for Coach Trevor Potts especially come postseason time when they could be seeing a high octane offense. There are major concerns with the Wildcats but they are living right, right now.
Lake Orion: The Dragons seen some major progress on both sides of the football despite falling 29-27 to Adams on Friday night. It was one controversial call that went against Lake Orion that changed things. The Dragons found a bit of an identity especially offensively, the defense had some moments but struggled again. This team has has not quit on the season despite being 0-7 on the season and been dealing with a lot of season ending injuries. The Dragons still need to reevaluate a lot of things but they have found a bit of an identity which is a good sign heading into the offseason.
