UPDATED Girls Basketball Districts-2026.

Written Tuesday June 10th at 12:11 PM

Updated Sunday January 11th at 10:34 AM

This will be updated very often. I'll have more information on future podcasts.

District 60 @ Birmingham Detroit Country Day

FERNDALE

FERNDALE UNIVERSITY

Hazel Park

Birmingham Detroit Country Day

Madison Heights Lamphere

Center Line

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Birmingham Detroit Country Day, 2. Center Line, 3. Ferndale University, 4. Hazel Park, 5. Madison Heights Lamphere, 6. Ferndale.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Cira Racco- Birmingham Detroit Country Day

X FACTOR- Janiyah Thomas- Center Line

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Center Line

MOST DANGEROUS: Ferndale University

SAMMY THOUGHTS: The projected MPR is a bit insane with Ferndale being 0-4 but it won't take long with the Eagles struggling everywhere. Ferndale University is the three seed despite their issues. I see the battle of Ferndale in the first round with the winner seeing Center Line who looks locked into the second seed in the district semifinals. Hazel Park and Madison Heights Lamphere looks to collide in the first round with the winner playing Birmingham Detroit Country Day. From what I'm seeing it looks like Ferndale, Hazel Park, and Madison Heights Lamphere could switch in the near future.

District 59 @ Eastpointe

HARPER WOODS

Eastpointe

Harper Woods Chandler Park

St. Clair Shores South Lake

Warren Lincoln

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Harper Woods Chandler Park, 2. Harper Woods, 3. Warren Lincoln, 4. St. Clair Shores South Lake, 5. Eastpointe.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Laynah West- Harper Woods

X FACTOR- Jayda Davis- Harper Woods

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Harper Woods Chandler Park

MOST DANGEROUS: Harper Woods

SAMMY THOUGHTS: This is a really bad district looking at it. Harper Woods is locked into the two seed which means they would see Warren Lincoln which would be a very interesting matchup in the district semifinals. St. Clair Shores South Lake and Eastpointe will meet in the first round with the winner seeing Harper Woods Chandler Park in the district semifinals. The Eagles are the early favorites.

District 29 @ Warren Mott

TROY

TROY ATHENS

ROYAL OAK

Warren Mott

Warren Cousino

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Troy, 2. Troy Athens, 3. Warren Cousino, 4. Royal Oak, 5. Warren Mott.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Maci Zeiter- Troy

X FACTOR- Katrina Tasich- Troy Athens

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Troy

MOST DANGEROUS: Royal Oak

SAMMY THOUGHTS: This district should be very interesting. I'm shocked with Warren Cousino struggling after being very successful in the past few years. Warren Mott was the two seed in their district last season before falling in the district semifinals.  If Royal Oak gets on a roll they can make up some ground really quick which the Ravens would want to play in the district semifinals and not the first round. I still think this district has both Troy schools locked into the top two seeds. This district could have a lot of movement in the next month.

District 28 @ Utica Eisenhower

ROCHESTER

STONEY CREEK

Utica

Romeo

Utica Eisenhower

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Utica Eisenhower, 2. Stoney Creek, 3. Romeo, 4. Rochester, 5. Utica.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Sam Fulkerson- Stoney Creek

X FACTOR- Taylor Parsons-Rochester

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Stoney Creek

MOST DANGEROUS: Rochester

SAMMY THOUGHTS: This should be a very interesting district especially the motivation Stoney Creek has after the screw job last season in the district final loss to Utica Eisenhower. The Cougars could get the top seed if the Eagles in any way falter. Stoney Creek does not want to see Rochester in the district semifinal considering the battles they have had and the Falcons know the Cougars extremely well. Utica Eisenhower has played a tough schedule but it would be interesting if they see Romeo in the district semifinals. Romeo has the three seed after beating Rochester in the regular season but those two seeds can change really quick. Utica is locked as the fifth seed and could see either Romeo or Rochester in the first round. I think the Falcons are the most dangerous team for the top two seeds but it should come down to the Eagles and Cougars but the Falcons and Bulldogs should be tough matchups in the district semifinals.

District 27 @ Lake Orion

LAKE ORION

CLARKSTON

ADAMS

AVONDALE

WATERFORD

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Clarkston, 2. Lake Orion, 3. Adams, 4. Avondale, 5. Waterford.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Faith Zoldus- Adams

X FACTOR- Sasha McClellan-Avondale

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Lake Orion

MOST DANGEROUS: Adams

SAMMY THOUGHTS: I don't really see any changes to the top two seeds despite Lake Orion's inexperience and struggles. The Dragons non conference schedule is brutal along with the Red. They look to be locked as the two seed at the moment. Clarkston is locked into the one seed at the moment. Adams is locked into the three seed. Waterford and Avondale could battle for the four seed and play each other with the winner getting Clarkston in the district semifinals while the Dragons and Highlanders could rematch in the district semifinals. Overall I don't see too much changes although there are warning signs with Lake Orion at the moment.

District 26 @ Oxford

OXFORD

Davison

Grand Blanc

Holly

Lapeer

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Davison, 2. Oxford, 3. Grand Blanc, 4. Lapeer, 5. Holly.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Kaitlyn Brockway- Oxford

X FACTOR- Savannah Rice- Davison

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Davison

MOST DANGEROUS: Oxford

SAMMY THOUGHTS: This district is really interesting. Oxford has played a much tougher schedule than Davison but the Cardinals have the top seed at the moment. The Wildcats are in a very interesting spot as the two seed. Grand Blanc has the three seed despite really struggling but they did beat Lapeer which is why they are the three and the Lightning are the four seed. Holly is locked into the five seed. I still think Oxford can make up some ground real quick and challenge Davison. The battle for the top two seeds is getting started in my opinion.

District 25 @ Lakeland

WEST BLOOMFIELD

Orchard Lake St. Marys

Lakeland

Walled Lake Central

Walled Lake Northern

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Orchard Lake St. Marys, 2. West Bloomfield, 3. Lakeland, 4. Walled Lake Northern, 5. Walled Lake Central.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Sheridan Beal- West Bloomfield

X FACTOR- Allie Crighton- Orchard Lake St. Marys

PRONE TO BE UPSET: West Bloomfield

MOST DANGEROUS: Walled Lake Northern

SAMMY THOUGHTS: The battle for the one and two seeds could likely be set between West Bloomfield and Orchard Lake St. Marys, could this be the year for the Eaglets to get the Lakers remains to be seen. Lakeland and Walled Lake Northern are battling battle for the third and fourth seeds while Walled Lake Central is locked as the fifth seed. Overall it's a two team district but West Bloomfield has looked human lately while Orchard Lake St. Marys hasn't lost a beat.

District 24 @ Bloomfield Hills

BLOOMFIELD HILLS

GROVES

SEAHOLM

NORTH FARMINGTON

Birmingham Marian

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Groves, 2. Bloomfield Hills, 3. Seaholm, 4. North Farmington, 5. Birmingham Marian.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Ella Swanson- Birmingham Marian

X FACTOR- Harlem Simpson- Groves

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Bloomfield Hills

MOST DANGEROUS: Groves

SAMMY THOUGHTS: This looks to be a very interesting district considering that Birmingham Marian has really struggled this season. The Mustangs would be the five seed which means they would play North Farmington who is having a solid season and if they were to beat the Raiders then they would play Groves in the district semifinals which is a very tough matchup. Seaholm and Bloomfield Hills looks like they could see each other in the district semifinals. Anything is possible but it looks like the Falcons are on a mission.

District 23 @ Southfield Arts and Tech

BERKLEY

OAK PARK

SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH

Detroit Renaissance

Detroit Mumford

Warren Fitzgerald

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Detroit Renaissance, 2. Detroit Mumford,  3. Southfield Arts and Tech, 4. Berkley,  5. Warren Fitzgerald, 6. Oak Park.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Nicqo Shoulders- Berkley

X FACTOR- Jaebrian Autry- Detroit Renaissance

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Detroit Renaissance

MOST DANGEROUS: Detroit Mumford

SAMMY THOUGHTS: Sometimes I don't understand the MPR, I ask why is Detroit Mumford seeded higher than Warren Fitzgerald. Detroit Renaissance is locked as the top seed but I don't understand why the Mustangs are seeded higher than the Spartans with Detroit Mumford having a losing record. Warren Fitzgerald is the three seed at the moment but they are in a tight battle with Southfield Arts and Tech for the third seed. The Spartans would play Oak Park in the first round with the winner getting Detroit Mumford which is a good matchup for whoever gets the three seed. The four/five winner gets Detroit Renaissance which for now is the Warriors and Berkley in the district semifinals. Oak Park has the sixth seed and looks to be locked in there. Still I don't see anyone in this district winning over Detroit Renaissance.

District 22 @ Livonia Stevenson

FARMINGTON

Livonia Franklin

Livonia Stevenson

Redford Thurston

Farmington Hills Mercy

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Farmington Hills Mercy, 2. Livonia Stevenson, 3. Livonia Franklin, 4. Farmington, 5. Redford Thurston.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Elle Geerings- Farmington Hills Mercy

X FACTOR- Sydney Nogas- Farmington

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Farmington Hills Mercy

MOST DANGEROUS: Livonia Stevenson

SAMMY THOUGHTS: I don't see really any changes to this district. Farmington and Redford Thurston will play in the first round with either Farmington Hills Mercy or Livonia Stevenson in the district semifinals while the other will get Livonia Franklin who is locked into the third seed in the district semifinals. It's going to be tough for Farmington either way.

Basketball Classics.

Written Sunday December 21st at 6:25 PM

Updated Saturday December 27th at 11:40 PM

Here are all the classics. This will be updated with all the recaps.

Girls

Detroit Public School League Holiday Classic @ Detroit Cass Tech

Sunday December 28th

WEST BLOOMFIELD 59, Detroit Cass Tech 48:

The Lakers had a monster early season win over Detroit Cass Tech winning 59-48 on Sunday afternoon in Detroit. Sheridan Beal has been a difference maker for West Bloomfield. Beal will be the key for the Lakers if they want to make noise in the Red this season.

Michigan Winter Hoopsfest @ Wayne Edison

Saturday December 27th

Midland 56, CLARKSTON 47:

The Wolves ran into a very good Midland program on Saturday afternoon at Detroit Edison. Clarkston had a rough time with Ellie Arnold as she scored 25 points for the Chemics in a 56-47 win over the Wolves. Elliana Robak had 23 points to lead Clarkston. It will be very interesting to see how the Wolves respond when they head to Perrysburg, Ohio for what should be a very interesting matchup in the new year.

Flint Kearsley Classic @ Flint Kearsley

Monday December 29th

Otisville Lakeville Memorial 46, WATERFORD 29:

Waterford United had a very disappointing 46-29 loss to Otisville Lakeville Memorial at Flint Kearsley on Monday morning. The Falcons are a good team at 3-1 but still this is not a good look for Coach Andrew Wellman and Waterford United. They will need to get back on track heading into Tuesday's constellation game against Lapeer.

Tuesday December 30th

Lapeer 43, WATERFORD 34:

Waterford finished in last in the Flint Kearsley Invitational falling 43-34 on Tuesday afternoon. The Lightning have been off to a strong start which has helped during the season. This is a tough break for Waterford as they are getting ready to head into 2026.

Boys

North Farmington Holiday Extravaganza @ North Farmington:

Saturday December 27th

Plymouth Salem 57, SEAHOLM 52

The Maples had a strong start on Saturday afternoon against the Rocks of Plymouth Salem leading 30-26 at halftime but the Rocks outscored the Maples 31-22 in the second half to earn a 57-52 win over Seaholm. The Maples were competitive against a very good Plymouth Salem program that beat Lake Orion earlier in the season. There are positives here for Seaholm going forward and they play Walled Lake Northern at North Farmington on Monday.

Birmingham Detroit Country Day 70, FARMINGTON 61:

The Falcons were bothered by a slow start which seen them trail 20-10 at the end of the first quarter but Farmington managed to get it to six at 50-44 after three quarters but Birmingham Detroit Country Day held on and won 70-61 at North Farmington on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons have another very tough game looming with Macomb Dakota at Ferndale on Monday.

AVONDALE 75, Detroit Mumford 59:

The Yellow Jackets went over 70 points in their 75-59 win over Detroit Mumford on Saturday night. Avondale has a ton of balance which makes them very dangerous and they showed it against the Mustangs. The Yellow Jackets will play Hamtramck on Monday in what should be a very interesting game.

Sunday December 28th

Brighton 60, TROY 57:

The Colts have had a habit of playing a ton of close games and this one was no different. Troy's scrappiness and competitiveness was on full display against a very good Brighton program on Sunday afternoon but it was the Bulldogs that won them the game 60-57 at North Farmington. The Colts have improved and are going to continue to get better as we head into 2026. Troy will be a tough team that is for sure going forward.

ROCHESTER 47, Ann Arbor Skyline 26:

The Falcons had no trouble with Ann Arbor Skyline winning 47-26 on Sunday night at North Farmington. Rochester was in firm control with their balance on both sides of the basketball. Anthony Chirco had 13 points while Luke Lower had 10 points while Ben Bissett and Logan Pleasent had eight points each for the Falcons. Rochester heads into 2026 with a ton of confidence and an 8-0 record.

WATERFORD MOTT 65, NORTH FARMINGTON 53:

The Corsairs knew that this was going to be a tough matchup in North Farmington with a Raiders team that was coming off a very tough overtime loss to their arch rival Farmington. Waterford Mott took advantage of a bad third quarter by North Farmington in a 69-53 win on Sunday night. The Corsairs were balanced on the night and it showed. DaMari Stephens had 29 points, Greg White had 15 points, and Hasim Outen had 12 points. The Raiders struggled with Stephens all night in the interior and in the outside. Waterford Mott closes 2025 with a win and heads to Grand Blanc to play Flint Carman Ainsworth.

Monday December 29th

Walled Lake Northern 39, SEAHOLM 27:

The Maples had a rough outing Walled Lake Northern on Monday afternoon. Seaholm was held to four points in the fourth quarter which is rough in a defensive type game like this one was in a 39-27 loss on Monday afternoon at North Farmington. The Knights are well coached under Ryan Negoshian who's brother Todd (Stoney Creek) and father Tom know the North Farmington gym very well and was very instrumental in this win for Walled Lake Northern. The Maples have a ton of work to do heading into 2026.

Warren DeLaSalle 65, NORTH FARMINGTON 62:

The Raiders had a chance to win the game with the Pilots but Warren DeLaSalle hit a three to tie it at 56-56 and force overtime. The Pilots got a winning three pointer in the extra session winning 65-62 on Monday night. North Farmington led 45-41 after three quarters but was outscored 15-11 which forced overtime. It was very similar to the game against Farmington where the game got close and the Raiders couldn't close it out. It will be interesting to see what the Raiders do in 2026 but this is a really bad loss for North Farmington.

Detroit Public School League Showcase @ Detroit Cass Tech:

Sunday December 28th

Detroit Edwin Denby Tech 67, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 63:

The Black Hawks had a very interesting matchup with Detroit Edwin Denby Tech but it was the Tars that got the best of Bloomfield Hills on Sunday afternoon at Detroit Cass Tech 67-63. Daron Mason led the Black Hawks with 19 points, Carter Hartfield had 12 points, and Griffin Osborn had 11 points. Bloomfield Hills has an interesting matchup looming with Lansing Catholic on Tuesday at Ferndale.

AQ Alumni Classic @ Aquinas College:

Saturday December 27th

WATERFORD MOTT 63, Lansing Catholic 51:

The Corsairs have started to turn things around a little bit after struggling against Chippewa Valley with two good wins over Goodrich and now Lansing Catholic where they won 63-51 on Saturday afternoon. Hasim Outen had 25 points and Jordan White added 15 points for Waterford Mott. Outen has taken over where JaKobe Manyweathers left off with the Corsairs. Waterford Mott has a big one looming with North Farmington on Sunday night.

CLARKSTON 72, Grand Rapids West Catholic 19:

The Wolves went all beast mode against Grand Rapids West Catholic winning 72-19 on Saturday afternoon. Clarkston took a tough loss to Saginaw Heritage in their last game but holding Grand Rapids West Catholic to 19 points in a four quarter game is pretty impressive. Hayden Barrow had 20 points and Ace Walters added 10 points. This game should help Clarkston in the long term going forward especially their young guys who got a chance to play a ton in this game.

Milford "Skip" Holiday Invitational @ Milford:

Monday December 29th

OXFORD 49, Milford 37:

The Wildcats went into Milford and behind a balanced attack on both sides of the basketball beat the Mavericks 49-37 in the Milford Skip Holiday Invitational on Monday night. Brennan Elling had 18 points, Cade Lindamood added 11 points, while Carter Jacobsen added 12 rebounds. Oxford will have a tough test awaiting them in the championship game with Hartland looming on Tuesday at Milford.

Tuesday December 30th

Hartland 41, OXFORD 24:

The Wildcats had a really tough matchup against Hartland on Tuesday night. Oxford was held to nine points in the first half and 15 points in the second half in a stunning 41-24 loss to the Eagles at Milford. It was going to be tough as mention for the Wildcats which it was. Also congrats to Brennan Elling on getting all honors in the Skip Holiday Invitational. Oxford heads into 2026 with a 500 record.

Romulus Summit Academy Showcase:

Sunday December 28th

LAKE ORION 63, Lincoln Park 41:

The Dragons went to Romulus and had an very impressive 63-41 win over a very good Lincoln Park program on Sunday afternoon. Lake Orion was led by Jackson Shoskey whom had an impressive night with 20 points and the Dragons had balance which showed throughout the game, Will Farmer had 11 points while Nate Giacolone had nine points and Max Neering had eight points. Also the Lake Orion defense was solid limiting a very high octane Railsplittlers offense to 41 points. The Dragons head into 2026 riding a ton of confidence heading into the new year.

Motor City Roundball @ Ferndale:

Thanks to TJ Kelly for the scores and results.

Saturday December 27th

OAK PARK 38, Hazel Park 30:

The Knights improved their record to a 3-0 start after an impressive 38-30 win over Hazel Park on Saturday morning. Kaiden Taylor had 13 points in the game. Oak Park has been solid defensively which explains their 3-0 start thus far. The Knights defense could be a factor in the Gold race along with Harper Woods, Southfield Arts and Tech, and Waterford Kettering.

ADAMS 58, SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH 44:

The Highlanders used a balance attack from Cannon Flynn and Zeek Wilson to handle the Warriors 58-44 on Saturday afternoon. Flynn had 22 points for Adams. The Highlanders as mentioned is in that very difficult White with Rochester, Stoney Creek, Lake Orion, and Oxford. Southfield Arts and Tech has played a tough non conference schedule which this game should help them as they head later into the season. The Warriors should be that conversation in the Gold with Oak Park, Waterford Kettering, and Harper Woods.

WEST BLOOMFIELD 69, HARPER WOODS 68:

The Lakers had a high scoring game with the Pioneers winning 69-68 on Saturday afternoon. Curtis Britton had a big night for West Bloomfield scoring 25 points. Harper Woods battled and never gave in and even led 32-24 at halftime. Jayden Thompson has been off to a really good start for the Pioneers along with three transfers from Canada Harper Woods got who have also been playing very well. This is not a good look for West Bloomfield despite winning this game especially when it comes to the Red but it's a great look for Harper Woods who is are big, young, tall, and athletic. The Pioneers are a team to watch in the Gold who could contend in that division.

Rockford 83, FERNDALE 75:

The Eagles lack of discipline especially the guards hurt them in their 83-75 loss to Rockford on their home floor on Saturday night. The Rams balance and depth gave the Eagles problems throughout the game along with their lack of discipline as mentioned. Eden Vinyard and Torriano Adams were both solid for Ferndale in defeat. Vinyard was in foul trouble throughout the first half while Adams carried the load. The lack of depth also hurt Coach Juan Rickman's team in this game as well. The Eagles will need to regroup heading into another huge game with Saginaw Heritage on Tuesday.

Sunday December 28th

Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood 80, BERKLEY 55:

The Bears had a rough outing with the Cranes of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood falling 80-55 on Sunday morning. Berkley is going through a rough patch falling to 2-5 on the season. The Bears will need to bounce back after a very disappointing game against the Cranes heading into 2026.

ROYAL OAK 55, St. Clair 52:

The Ravens back court of CJ Hariston and Pontez Bates were instrumental in their 55-52 win over the Saints. Royal Oak has been a very inconsistent team as of late but they found a way and won the game against a very good program in St. Clair. Hariston had 22 points and Bates added 15 points. The Ravens should be very competitive heading into 2026.

Monday December 29th

Macomb Dakota 77, FARMINGTON 65:

It was going to be a really tough matchup for the Falcons taking on a very good Macomb Dakota program that is very deep and talented. Farmington took their second straight loss falling 77-65 to the Cougars on Monday afternoon. The Falcons haven't been the same team since winning their emotional overtime game over their arch rival North Farmington but they are also playing a much tougher schedule as well to their defense. We'll see if this schedule helps Farmington heading into 2026.

AVONDALE 56, Hamtramck 53:

In a game that went back and forth, this game lived up to the hype. The Yellow Jackets found a way and survived winning 56-53 over the Cosmos on Monday night. Avondale is riding with a ton of confidence heading into 2026 with a loaded and experienced team. It looks like the Yellow Jackets are clicking on all cylinders on both sides of the basketball right now.

Tuesday December 30th

Detroit Pershing 55, PONTIAC 53:

In a game that went back and fourth which seen two former players at Michigan go against each other as coaches. It was the Doughboys that escaped with a 55-53 win over the Phoenix. Detroit Pershing did just enough and hung on late. Pontiac's two freshmen guards were very impressive and will look to make some noise. The Phoenix will be fine heading into 2026 especially heading into the Blue. Thanks to Scott Podzikowski for getting this score.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS 68, Lansing Catholic 57:

The Black Hawks closed out 2025 with a big 68-57 win over Lansing Catholic on Tuesday afternoon. Bloomfield Hills used their balance which proved to be a big difference in the game. Daron Mason had 18 points, Brennan Bies had 16 points, and Meyer Staperstein had 12 points for the Black Hawks. It should be very interesting to see what Bloomfield Hills does heading into 2026.

FERNDALE 90, Saginaw Heritage 65:

The Eagles came out like gang busters on their home floor on Tuesday night by dominating the Hawks winning 90-65. Ferndale was in firm control in the first half taking a 55-24 halftime lead and never looked back. Eden Vinyard played very well for Ferndale and was dominant throughout the game scoring 30 points. The Eagles are a sleeper in the Red but they already have a loss to Clarkston and haven't played Avondale yet. They have a really tough matchup looming with Muskegon next weekend.

Mike Turner Classic @ Albion College:

Saturday January 3rd

Richland Gull Lake 56, OAK PARK 47:

In a matchup of two teams that love low scoring games, the Knights put their unbeaten record on the line against the Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon in Albion but Oak Park fell 56-47 on Saturday morning. Richland Gull Lake has been struggling as of late losing four straight games but gave the Knights their first loss of the season. It will be interesting to see what happens with Oak Park going forward.

Carmody Classic @ Grand Blanc

Saturday January 3rd

WATERFORD MOTT 75, Flint Carman Ainsworth 72:

The Corsairs seen an 11 point halftime lead come to a halt when Flint Carman Ainsworth tied the game at 72-72 however Haziah Outen hit a three pointer at the buzzer to give Waterford Mott a 75-72 win over the Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon. Outen had 29 points in the game. The Corsairs are a very interesting team as mentioned, conditioning could be something to watch with Coach Jeff Jayson's team going forward.

Grand Blanc 54, CLARKSTON 47:

It was going to be a tough matchup for the Wolves taking on the host school in their own classic. Clarkston was held to two points in the second quarter which proved to be a difference in a 54-47 loss to the Bobcats on Saturday night. Ace Walters led Clarkston with 17 points in the loss. The Wolves have had four rough quarters thus far this season (three against Saginaw Heritage, and one against Grand Blanc, both resulted in losses.) This is an area where Coach Tim Waslik needs to improve on if the Wolves want to have a deep postseason run.

Muskegon Boys Basketball Showcase @ Muskegon

Saturday January 3rd

Muskegon 57, FERNDALE 52:

The Eagles were going to have things tough heading to Muskegon to play the Big Reds in their own showcase. Ferndale was in it for most of the game but they fell short in the end falling 57-52 to go to 4-5 on the season. The Eagles have played a ton of showcase games which usually helps the MPR but too much could be a problem for Coach Juan Rickman and Ferndale. They need a share of cupcake games to gain confidence and prepare for the postseason.

Girls Basketball Storylines.

Written Sunday December 14th at 1:00 PM

The Gold is off to a very interesting start. Ferndale University sits at 3-0 but the schedule has been very manageable for the Eagles. Waterford in their first OAA game fell 60-33 to Troy. Oak Park it's hard to judge them since they haven't played a game yet. Pontiac got blown out 66-5 by Auburn Hills Oakland Christian which is a cause for concern. Farmington is 2-1 in their final year in the OAA but is coming off a loss to Walled Lake Northern. North Farmington has bounced back nicely since their only loss to Walled Lake Western.

The Blue could be very interesting as well. Southfield Arts and Tech had a split week falling to Canton but bounced back winning by 40 over Warren Michigan Collegiate. Harper Woods has put things since falling to Farmington Hills Mercy with two blowout wins. Troy Athens looks to be much improved after two wins. Troy is also 2-0 after two solid wins. Adams had a tough loss to Stoney Creek but they will be fine. Can't judge Ferndale yet since they haven't played yet.

The White looks to be very competitive. Groves sits at 0-2 but they get a pass because they have played two very good teams. Berkley who is also 0-2 gets a pass as well with playing two very good teams. Avondale had a tough loss to Rochester but they will be fine. Bloomfield Hills split their two games falling to a very good Orchard Lake St. Marys program. Royal Oak has some questions defensively after falling 49-46 to Ann Arbor Huron. Seaholm is a mystery defensively which they are going through some offensive woes.

The Red should be very interesting. Oxford had a statement 48-47 win over Macomb Dakota behind Katelyn Brockway's 25 points after getting blown out by Orchard Lake St. Marys opening night. West Bloomfield had a tough loss to a very good Wayne Memorial program. Clarkston is off to a strong start at 3-0 and has been battle tested with a very young roster. Stoney Creek also sits at 3-0 after three close games but warning signs are still there with this team. Rochester is off to a 2-0 start after big wins over Davison and Avondale. Lake Orion is off to a rough start especially on the offensive end which that could be their issue all season long. The Dragons are also a very young team that is going through some growing pains as well.

I'll have more on this on the podcast.

Boys Basketball Thoughts.

Written Sunday December 14th at 8:47 AM

Here are some thoughts on each team for the week. This will also be on the website https://aroundtheoaa.weebly.com/ as well

Avondale: The Yellow Jackets are clicking on all cylinders especially offensively. Avondale has had a ton of confidence which is why they are winning games. They have balance and they have been producing. It will be very interesting to see how Avondale responds going forward.

Clarkston: The Wolves are off to a great start and their play has showed it. Clarkston has balance and has really showed that they are for real. It will be really interesting if they can sustain this play when the Red goes deeper. The Wolves are in a great spot right now.

Ferndale: The Eagles have been battle tested which has shown in their games but it's clear that if Eden Vinyard gets into foul trouble or gets shut down that's bad news for Coach Juan Rickman and the Eagles. The non conference schedule helps in the long term but the short term Ferndale is going through some inconsistency right now.

West Bloomfield: The Lakers still have a defensive problem but its somehow improving despite allowing 56 points. The magic number for Coach Arnette Jordan to hold teams is below 45 points, if you hold a team to under 45 points, that's a great defensive win. The defense still continues to be the story for West Bloomfield but 56 points allowed is a start.

Groves: The Falcons have been a hard team to figure out, there are times they look good and times not so much. Groves will be dealing with those inconsistency all season long. It will be very interesting to see what Coach Marc West does heading into Christmas with these inconsistency issues.

North Farmington: The Raiders are off to a strong start but they needed to beat Detroit University Prep 67-58. The game between North Farmington and Farmington will be intense as it always has but the Raiders have a new coaching staff. It's clear that North Farmington is rolling right now and starting to become more battle tested.

Farmington: The Falcons are off to a strong start scoring a ton of points while allowing a bunch which is a concern. Farmington has continued the momentum from last season which is a good sign for them especially heading into the Red. Coach Byron Johnson has this program believing.

Waterford Mott: The Corsairs had an interesting week where they were upset by Hartland but knocked off their arch rival Waterford Kettering. Waterford Mott has been a very interesting team to figure out lately with the stunning loss to the Eagles and they took it out on their arch rival. Waterford Mott needs to figure their problems on big courts out or it could be trouble for the Corsairs.

Lake Orion: The Dragons shooting percentage is going to decide them games. The poor shooting percentage showed it's ugly head against Salem but something tells me that Lake Orion is going to be fine after the loss to the Rocks. The Dragons have to shoot well to win games that is the bottom line.

Adams: The Highlanders have seemed to turn things around after two tough losses to two very good teams by winning two straight games. It looks like Cannon Flynn might have found a robin which will be huge for the Highlanders going forward. Adams looks like they are clicking and heading in the right direction.

Stoney Creek: The Cougars are off to a strong start despite the loss to Clarkston, they are happier, more confident under Coach Marko Tomich. The schedule will get tougher for Stoney Creek but they are in a good spot right now.

Rochester: The Falcons have been on a tear and have been taking names. Rochester had a tough one with Troy Athens winning 47-38 on the road. The Falcons are for real, the Ann Arbor Skyline game could be their next test heading forward. Rochester is clicking that is for sure.

Oxford: The Wildcats have been competitive which is a great sign but there will be some very tough lessons which showed in their 49-48 loss to Utica Eisenhower on Friday night. Oxford will be fine going forward despite the loss but things are going to get harder from here for them.

Pontiac: The Phoenix have turned things around after losing to Avondale and have won three straight. Pontiac has proven they can win in different ways which is a good sign for Coach Dion Harris going forward. The Phoenix are fine right now.

Bloomfield Hills: The Black Hawks are rolling right now winning four straight games over quality competition. Bloomfield Hills has a chance to have a special year with the way things are going. They have a very interesting game with Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy looming this weekend which could be a fun one. The Black Hawks are clicking as mentioned.

Troy: The Colts have been very competitive going on a two game winning streak. Troy has been very good offensively as of late but the defense will be key for Coach Gary Fralick especially later in the season. The Colts are starting to put it together.

Troy Athens: The Red Hawks have been very competitive despite having tough losses lately but Troy Athens should be better despite the losses especially later in the season and heading into the postseason. The Red Hawks are much improved under Coach Mitchell Vercellino. It's only a matter of time before they turn things around.

Royal Oak: The Ravens have been competitive that is for sure and that is what Coach Aaron Smith wants, despite their two tough losses it is no doubt that Royal Oak has stepped up their game. This will be a team to watch heading into Christmas. Smith has the Ravens heading in the right direction.

Seaholm: The Maples went back to Earth a little bit with two tough losses to Adams and South Lyon East. Seaholm could be that mystery team this season. Coach Spenser Adams needs to find a way to get back to that Maples team that was very good defensively early in the year or trouble looms.

Waterford Kettering: The Captains are 2-2 in this young season, losing to arch rival Waterford Mott but beat Lapeer 48-45 on a buzzer beater, it's no doubt that Waterford Kettering is making progress under Coach Will Campbell but they still have a long way to go. The Captains have made a ton of progress from last season that is for sure.

Harper Woods: The Pioneers had a rough outing falling 56-43 to Troy. There are some concerns with Coach TaJuan Porter's team heading into the season. Harper Woods is in need of a bounce back if not they are in trouble.

Oak Park: The Knights had no trouble with Melvindale holding them to 12 points. Oak Park is off to a solid start but there are tougher road blocks ahead for the Knights going forward.

Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors had a rough week but Coach Josh Lyle likes to play very tough games as mentioned in last week's thoughts. Southfield Arts and Tech might be the favorite in the Gold with the way things are looking right now.

Ferndale University: The Eagles did not play this week but they have a ton of work to do if they want to get their scoring up. The defense has improved despite the two losses. The offense will be the key going forward for Ferndale University.

Berkley: It was a rough week for the Bears which saw two tough losses to American International Academy and Detroit Jalen Rose Academy. It's going to be a rough transition period for Berkley with a young team which is what everyone is seeing at the moment. The Bears have Bloomfield Hills and Madison which are going to be very tough games for them.

Boys Basketball Thoughts.

Written Sunday December 7th at 8:35 AM

Here are some thoughts on each team for the week. This will also be on the website https://aroundtheoaa.weebly.com/ as well

Avondale: The Yellow Jackets are off to a strong start early in the season winning 43-34 over Pontiac and 73-47 over Flint Standard are great wins but the game against Pontiac despite winning 43-34 has me concerned a bit about Avondale. The Yellow Jackets are very athletic but there are some questions that Coach Aaron Fox and his team need to address. If they can address this then Avondale will be fine. They have Detroit University Prep and West Bloomfield looming next week.

Clarkston: The Wolves look like they are the most complete team to start this early season. Clarkston got two wins over Lake Orion (77-49) and Adams (68-44.) The Wolves have a deep team and a ton of proven shooters just like the days of legendary coach Dan Fife. Clarkston has been improving each year under Coach Tim Wasilk but can they sustain is the key going forward. They have Stoney Creek and Ferndale looming next week.

Ferndale: The Eagles have been used to playing very tough schedules and this week has been no different for Coach Juan Rickman's team. Ferndale was blown out 89-57 by Birmingham Brother Rice and then blew out River Rouge 77-49. Eden Vinyard has been the star for the Eagles but they need others like Torrino Adams and others to step up. Ferndale has Clarkston, Ohio Reynoldsburg, and Warren Lincoln looming this week.

West Bloomfield: The Lakers defense could be a storyline to watch this season. It haunted them again allowing 84 points in a 84-72 loss to Detroit University Prep. Coach Arnette Jordan needs to shore the defense up and quickly. West Bloomfield will have three games with Birmingham Detroit Country Day, Avondale, and Detroit Cass Tech looming this week.

Groves: The Falcons had a very interesting week. Groves fell 54-53 to Oxford then bounced back and beat Warren DeLaSalle 59-54 and Imlay City 74-60. The Falcons young talent has managed to make a ton of strides despite this being a rebuilding year for Coach Marc West. I don't know how this will sustain in the Red but it's a start for Groves. They have two very tough matchups in Bloomfield Hills and North Farmington looming next week.

North Farmington: The Raiders are off to a strong start in their final season in the OAA winning 62-47 over Davison and 41-35 over Plymouth Canton. North Farmington has relied on their tough defense which has always been there for new coach Pete Mantyla. The Raiders have Detroit University Prep and Groves looming next week.

Farmington: It's really hard to judge the Falcons when they haven't reported their score with Ann Arbor Pioneer yet. Farmington has the athletes to be competitive in the Red but there are still some questions going forward for Coach Byron Johnson. They have Detroit University Prep and Southfield Arts and Tech looming next week.

Waterford Mott: The Corsairs look like they haven't missed a beat since getting to the regional final last season. Waterford Mott won two games over Stoney Creek 63-53 and 63-49 over Northville. The Corsairs have used their balance to win games which is a winning formula for Coach Jeff Jayson and his team going forward. Waterford Mott has Hartland and Waterford Kettering looming next week.

Lake Orion: The Dragons had an up and down week. They fell 77-49 to Clarkston behind turnovers and loss of identity. Lake Orion got back their identity with a stunning 72-53 win over Davison. When the Dragons play team ball that is where they are at their most dangerous which Coach Jose Andrades knows and makes him very happy. Lake Orion has two tough games with Novi and Plymouth Salem looming next week.

Adams: The Highlanders are off to a rough start but to their defense in their two losses they were to good teams (Clarkston 68-44, Macomb Dakota 60-53.) The problem for Coach Isiah Novak's team has been when Cannon Flynn is not on the floor, they tend to struggle when he is not. Adams needs to address this issue, they have the shooters but they need to find that Robin to the Flynn Batman if they want to find success this season. The Highlanders have Seaholm and Royal Oak looming next week.

Stoney Creek: The Cougars have found themselves a sense of confidence and hope under new coach Marko Tomich. Stoney Creek used their balance in a 69-55 win over Utica Eisenhower despite falling 63-53 to Waterford Mott but they were tied at half and hung in there throughout that game. Quentin Rangi, Brodie Telegdas, and Anthony Arlinghaus have been the story to their early success. It's clear the Cougars are much improved and happier under Tomich but there are still some dangers, warnings, and concerns. It's almost like this team and Tomich reminds me of the book Star Wars Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover and the movie but for now Stoney Creek has a lot of confidence from Tomich's first win but the road gets tougher. They have Clarkston and Utica looming next week.

Rochester: The Falcons are off to a strong start with three impressive wins (St. Clair Shores Lakeview (73-40), Utica (66-41), Chippewa Valley (66-46.) Rochester has gotten contributions from multiple players like Luke Lower, Logan Pleasent, Ben Bissett, and Anthony Chircho among others but the play of Nate Tandy fits this team very well, he's an engine and a machine when on the court. What makes Coach Nick Evola very happy is the Falcons play team ball. This is a style that makes most teams very dangerous and Rochester is one of those teams that plays this style. Rochester and their fans know that there will be more tough teams ahead. They have Lapeer and Troy Athens looming next week.

Oxford: The Wildcats had to replace a ton of talent from last season but they are off to a 2-0 start after surviving Groves 54-53 and had a strong defensive effort winning 34-15 over Fraser. Cade Lindamood has been a big addition for Coach Joe Fedorichik and they've gotten timely play from Grayson Boyle and Brody Casper while Brennan Elling is well Brennan Elling. Oxford has some concerns going forward despite the start, can they sustain this form of defense is the biggest one that Wildcats fans have to address. They have Troy Athens, Sterling Heights Stevenson, and Utica Eisenhower looming with two of those being tough games next week.

Pontiac: The Phoenix had a tough week that saw a tough 43-34 loss to arch rival Avondale but an impressive 69-61 win over Fenton. Pontiac has been going through some growing pains with the freshmen they have on the roster but for Coach Dion Harris this is a start to building something special in Pontiac. It's all about program strength for the Phoenix. They have Ferndale University and Lansing Eastern looming next week.

Bloomfield Hills: The Black Hawks are off to a strong start with a 60-49 win over Walled Lake Western along with a 61-32 blowout of Grosse Pointe North. DaRon Mason has been on fire this early season and all summer along with Carter Canfield and others for Coach Brian Canfield. They are clicking with Groves and Warren Woods Tower looming next week.

Troy: The Colts overcame a split this week winning 64-31 over Waterford Kettering but fell 63-55 to Utica. Troy lost Will DeArmit to an ankle injury but Harmon Orioum carried the slack with 27 points in the loss to Utica. The Colts were scrappy and they changed defenses with their press. Orioum and Jeffries played well along with Blake Kupier. Coach Gary Fralick's team will be fine. They have Harper Woods and Madison Heights Lamphere looming next week.

Troy Athens: The Red Hawks had a strong week which had two big wins and a heartbreaking loss. Troy Athens fell 61-60 to Macomb L'Anse Creuse North on a buzzer beater. They got wins over Ferndale University (64-26) and Berkley (61-44.) Coach Mitchell Vercellino's team will be fine despite the tough loss. The Red Hawks are tall and very lengthy which should help going forward. They have Oxford and Rochester looming next week.

Royal Oak: The Ravens are off to a strong start but they have won both games by a combined nine points (Holly 67-59, Madison Heights Lamphere 53-52.) For Coach Aaron Smith they are taking care of business like the Detroit Pistons have done but they have done things the hard way. We'll know a lot about Royal Oak when they have Walled Lake Western and Adams looming next week.

Seaholm: The Maples had a great week winning two games over Berkley (53-42) and South Lyon (45-23) but both teams are very young teams that are going through tough rebuilds. It's a great start for Coach Spenser Adams and company but they need a test down the line which they will get in the future. Seaholm will be tested with Adams and South Lyon East looming next week.

Waterford Kettering: The Captains had a bit of both wins and losses this week which should help their confidence heading into the season. Waterford Kettering won 63-53 over North Branch but fell 64-31 to Troy. The Captains are in a very interesting spot for Coach Will Campbell where they have Lapeer and Waterford Mott looming next week.

Harper Woods: The Pioneers haven't played a game yet but they will have two games with Troy and Westfield Prep looming next week for Coach TaJuan Porter.

Oak Park: The Knights haven't played a game yet but they will have two games with Melvindale and Center Line looming next week for Coach Durrand Sheppard.

Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors have toughen their non conference schedule which has seen ups which was a 58-47 win over Detroit East English Village Prep and the lows a 77-56 loss to Plymouth Canton. It is know doubt under Coach Josh Lyle, Southfield Arts and Tech is heading in the right direction. They have Farmington and Detroit Pershing looming next week.

Ferndale University: The Eagles have been struggling to score scoring 56 points in two games in both losses to Detroit East English Village Prep and Troy Athens. Ferndale University is going through a tough transition period right now for Coach Antwan Bradford. They have two tough games with Pontiac and Center Line Prep looming next week.

Berkley: There is no doubt the Bears are a very young team which was shown in their 53-42 loss to Seaholm and 61-44 loss to Troy Athens. It's going to take time for Coach James McCullough to get his style of play into Berkley. They have Detroit Jalen Rose Academy, Madison Heights Bishop Foley, and Inkster American International Academy looming next week.
