District 62 @ Goodrich

PONTIAC

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

Goodrich

Brandon

Lake Fenton

Linden

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Pontiac, 2. Goodrich, 3. Lake Fenton, 4. Linden, 5. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, 6. Brandon.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: JJ Claudio-Pontiac

X FACTOR: Dominic Melaragni- Goodrich

PRONE TO GET UPSET: Goodrich

MOST DANGEROUS: Pontiac

EARLY THOUGHTS: This is a really interesting district to keep an eye on. Pontiac has a new coach in Dion Harris taking over the program. The Phoenix fell to arch rival Pontiac Notre Dame Prep in the district finals at Sy Green Gym last season so there is a chip on the shoulder for Pontiac especially with how proud a program they are. The Fighting Irish will always be in the conversation when it comes to the district but they have a new coach at Whitney Robinson has stepped down coaching the program according to sources and Andy Durkin has taken over the program. There is a proven power in Goodrich who is in this district as well and has a legendary coach in Gary Barnes as well. The Martians won 19 games and their district as well last season. Lake Fenton won 14 games for Coach Jalen Miller but fell 51-49 to Williamston in the first round last season. Linden also won 14 games as well and has been improving each season for second year Coach Brendan Miller. Brandon has struggled winning two games last season but they could improve for Coach Matthew Christenson. Overall Goodrich looks to be the favorite but Pontiac, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, Lake Fenton, and Linden have solid chances to win this district.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: The Phoenix stand as the team to beat in this district. Goodrich has not been the same team which included a loss to Waterford Mott but they have home court and still is a very dangerous team. Lake Fenton is off to a solid start. Linden looks to be locked in for the four seed in this district. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep has been struggling while Brandon has also struggled as well. Overall for now this looks to be Pontiac's district to lose but they need to beware of the Martians.

District 60 @ Harper Woods Chandler Park

HARPER WOODS

Harper Woods Chandler Park

Detroit Edwin Denby Tech

Eastpointe

Detroit East English Village Prep

St. Clair Shores South Lake

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Harper Woods Chandler Park, 2. Detroit Edwin Denby Tech, 3. Detroit East English Village Prep, 4. Harper Woods, 5. St. Clair Shores South Lake, 6. Eastpointe.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Andre Cast- Harper Woods

X FACTOR: Delvon Dixson- Detroit Edwin Denby Tech

PRONE TO GET UPSET: St. Clair Shores South Lake

MOST DANGEROUS: Detroit Edwin Denby Tech

EARLY THOUGHTS: This looks to be a really interesting district on paper with a lot of new coaches in this district. Harper Woods really struggled last season. It's possible they could struggle this season despite having one of the top guards in Andre Cast coming back for Coach TaJuan Porter. St. Clair Shores South Lake won 13 games last season for Coach Curtis Gillyen. Harper Woods Chandler Park was up and down winning 10 games last season. The Eagles have a new coach in James Scott who has taken over the program. Detroit East English Village Prep was around 500 winning nine games last season for Coach Brandon Moore. Detroit Edwin Denby won 15 games along with a district crown for Coach Kevin Woodmore. Eastpointe won 11 games last season and has a new coach in former River Rouge Coach Joe Carr taking over the program. The Tars could be the early favorite to win this district but never ever count the Cavaliers out by a second.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: I've been getting more impressed with Harper Woods Chandler Park as the season gone on. The Eagles have had BIG wins over Macomb Dakota and Troy Athens which is why I have them as a lock for the top seed and they have home court. Detroit Edwin Denby Tech is one of the favorites but the Tars seem to be locked into the two seed. I think the three through five seeds can go any way. Harper Woods is a very young team but there are some concerns surrounding the Pioneers. Detroit East English Village Prep has an above 500 record but strength of schedule is not as strong. St. Clair Shores South Lake has a chance to make some ground in the Macomb Area Conference despite a slow start. I'm not convinced with Eastpointe for now but you never know with the Shamrocks. Overall this district looks like it's the Eagles district to lose.

District 58 @ Detroit Old Redford

FERNDALE

FERNDALE UNIVERSITY

Detroit Jalen Rose Academy

Detroit Lincoln King Academy

Detroit Old Redford

Hazel Park

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Ferndale, 2. Detroit Old Redford, 3. Detroit Lincoln King Academy, 4. Hazel Park, 5. Detroit Jalen Rose Academy, 6. Ferndale University.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Drew Wilson-Detroit Old Redford

X FACTOR: Eden Vinyard- Ferndale

PRONE TO GET UPSET: Ferndale

MOST DANGEROUS: Detroit Old Redford

EARLY THOUGHTS: This is a loaded district on paper. Ferndale is looking to have a bounce back after two early exits in the postseason after winning the Division Two State Crown under Coach and Athletic Director Juan Rickman. Detroit Old Redford won 19 games last season. The Ravens have former Bloomfield Hills and West Bloomfield point guard Drew Wilson coming back for Coach Rashad Reeves. Ferndale University looks to be much improved as well and could be a factor but they will have a new Coach as Josh Nicks left Ferndale University for Hazel Park. The Eagles went with experience and named Anton Bradford as their new coach. Hazel Park won 13 games last season but the Vikings will have a new coach as CJ Goff stepped down and Nicks has taken over the program. Detroit Lincoln King Academy was really competitive last season winning 13 games for Coach JuJuan Armstrong. Detroit Jalen Rose Academy won 10 games last season for Coach Allen Gee. Overall this district could be a two team between Detroit Old Redford and Ferndale but anyone in this district is capable of pulling an upset.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This district could come down to Detroit Old Redford Academy and Ferndale for the top two seeds. Both teams play in a ton of showcase games and have very tough non conference schedules but the Ravens have home court. Hazel Park and Detroit Lincoln King Academy could battle for the three seed while Ferndale University and Detroit Jalen Rose Academy could battle for the fifth and sixth seeds as both teams will look to improve heading into 2026. Overall this district will be either the Eagles or the Ravens.

District 29 @ Troy Athens

TROY ATHENS

TROY

ROYAL OAK

Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood

Warren Mott

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Royal Oak, 2. Troy, 3. Troy Athens, 4. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood, 5. Warren Mott.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: CJ Hairston- Royal Oak

X FACTOR: Caiden Hanburry- Troy Athens

PRONE TO GET UPSET: Royal Oak

MOST DANGEROUS: Troy

EARLY THOUGHTS: This looks to be a really interesting district on paper. The only difference is Berkley went south and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood enters into this district. Shout-out to Margaret (Troy Athens security lady) who is going to have to deal with this. Troy Athens won the district last season which included wins over Troy and Royal Oak. The Red Hawks could be poised to take the next step under second year coach Mitchell Vercellino. Royal Oak moved to the Blue and could be a factor after making the district finals last season under Coach Aaron Smith. Troy looks to be the wildcard but knowing legendary Coach Gary Fralick, he will have his team ready. Warren Mott really struggled last season winning one game for Coach Matthew Fecht. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood really struggled winning four games last season comes from Division Two under Coach Matt Gump. Overall the Red Hawks are the early favorite but Royal Oak and Troy are going to be factors as well.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This district could get very interesting at Troy Athens. Troy is much better than thought after experts projected the Colts would struggle this season but they have had several players step up. Troy Athens has been up and down lately but they have a ton of district championship experience. Royal Oak is off to a strong start but their test will be when they get into the Blue. Troy, Troy Athens, and Royal Oak will be very familiar with one another since they will play each other twice and it's possible they could play three times. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood and Warren Mott look to be locked into the fourth and fifth seeds respectively. This should be a fun three way to decide who has to play in the two/three game and who gets the top seed, a lot of opportunity awaits.

District 28 @ Utica Eisenhower

ADAMS

STONEY CREEK

ROCHESTER

Utica

Utica Eisenhower

Romeo

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Rochester, 2. Adams, 3. Stoney Creek, 4. Utica, 5. Utica Eisenhower, 6. Romeo.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Cannon Flynn- Adams

X FACTOR: Logan Pleasant- Rochester

PRONE TO GET UPSET: Adams

MOST DANGEROUS: Rochester

EARLY THOUGHTS: This looks to be a really interesting district but could have some similarities to last season. The Rochester schools will play each other twice in the regular season with all three teams being in the White. Rochester has a ton of proven talent coming back along with a strong sub varsity program but the recent transfer of Max Muhl could change things for Coach Nick Evola however program strength is there for the Falcons. Adams has Cannon Flynn, Daniel Terski, and a loaded and proven team for Coach Isiah Novak. Stoney Creek has a proven experienced team but they have a new coach in Marko Tomich taking over the program. The Cougars have had a strong summer thus far and they have a new athletic director in former North Farmington Coach Todd Negoshian who will certainly try to make his mark with his new program. Romeo has some questions and has won two district games in the last six years under Coach Marvin Cushinberry. Utica Eisenhower should be improved and has home court for Coach Anthony Muscat. Utica should also be better despite really struggling for Coach David Hinkle last season. Overall it looks like it could be very similar to last season when looking at this district.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This district is very interesting since it's at Utica Eisenhower which is a smaller gym. Being at home should help the Eagles but they have been decimated by injuries including a big one to Randall Rice but Utica Eisenhower was healthy when they lost to Stoney Creek earlier in the season. The Cougars are much improved and happier under Coach Marco Tomich which included a blowout win over Romeo. The Bulldogs are a team that is really hard to trust in the postseason. Utica has improved and could be a spoiler to any of the top three White contenders in this district. Adams has been hit and miss lately but they still have the best player in Cannon Flynn. Rochester is the most dangerous team in this district. The Falcons play team ball and are off to a torrid start which included a blowout win over Chippewa Valley which in turn the Big Reds beat Waterford Mott. The MPR has Adams as the top seed for the moment but the eye ball test says the Falcons should be the top seed then it's the Highlanders for the two seed but I expect a lot of changes when it comes to seeding. Stoney Creek is clearly the third seed followed by Utica, Romeo, and Utica Eisenhower but there is a chance when healthy that the Eagles could pass the Bulldogs and get the fifth or maybe the four seed, it's very possible at the moment.

District 27 @ Lake Orion

LAKE ORION

AVONDALE

CLARKSTON

WATERFORD KETTERING

WATERFORD MOTT

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Avondale, 2. Clarkston, 3. Waterford Mott, 4. Lake Orion, 5. Waterford Kettering.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Nate Giacolone- Lake Orion

X FACTOR: JaKobe Louris- Avondale

PRONE TO GET UPSET: Clarkston

MOST DANGEROUS: Lake Orion

EARLY THOUGHTS: This is the same district as last season except the district heads north to Lake Orion. Waterford Mott won the district last season but they lost a ton of experience and they are coming into the OAA. The Corsairs have some experience in DaKari Stephens coming back but there are a ton of questions with Waterford Mott for Coach Jeff Jayson. Waterford Kettering is also coming into the OAA. The Captains will be much improved and is the early favorite in the Gold but they will have a new coach as Rex Walters shockingly stepped down in August and Will Campbell has taken over the program. Clarkston will be in the conversation but they have some questions coming into the season. Lake Orion is guard heavy but the interior will be very interesting to watch for Coach Jose Andrades. Avondale is loaded and with Max Muhl transferring to Auburn Hills it makes them a bit different but they will have a new coach as Jaret Thomas stepped down and is at Oakland Community College. Aaron Fox has taken over as the new coach of the Yellow Jackets. Interior play will be the key to watch in this district.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This will be a very tough district in Lake Orion. The district looks like the seeds are right for the time being. Avondale is off to a great start and they are coming off a tough win over Grand Blanc. Clarkston is off to a strong start despite falling to Saginaw Heritage after a rough three quarters. Both the Yellow Jackets and Wolves will meet twice in the Red as will Waterford Mott and Lake Orion in the White. The Corsairs and Dragons are no strangers to one another as Mott has won the last two meetings against Lake Orion in the postseason. The Corsairs have been up and down as of late. The Dragons have also been up and down as well. Waterford Kettering looks to be locked as the fifth seed. The Captains have shown improvement winning two games thus far. Overall the district hasn't changed but when 2026 comes there could be some movement.

District 26 @ West Bloomfield

WEST BLOOMFIELD

Orchard Lake St. Marys

Walled Lake Northern

Walled Lake Central

Lakeland

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Walled Lake Central, 2. Walled Lake Northern, 3. Lakeland, 4. Orchard Lake St. Marys, 5. West Bloomfield.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Anthony Camacho- Walled Lake Central

X FACTOR: Curtis Britton- West Bloomfield

PRONE TO GET UPSET: Orchard Lake St. Marys

MOST DANGEROUS: Walled Lake Central

EARLY THOUGHTS: This is a very similar district to last season when Orchard Lake St. Marys ran away with the district crown on the black top in the Swamp. The Eaglets will be a different team but they are still loaded for Coach Todd Covert. West Bloomfield will need to defend if they want any chance to win this district and Coach Arnette Jordan knows that. Walled Lake Central will be really interesting having won 38 games and two Lakes Valley Conference crowns in the last two years for Coach Chuck Spolsky but they lost twice in the postseason to West Bloomfield. The Vikings have a dynamic player in Anthony Camacho and also Evan Brown coming back. Walled Lake Northern should be much improved under Coach Ryan Negoshian. Lakeland should be solid for Coach Rob Thompson. Overall I don't see anyone touching the Eaglets.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: Who would have ever thought that Lakeland would have the top spot in the MPR while Orchard Lake St. Marys has the fifth seed right now??? I expect a ton of movement once late February comes. The Eaglets play in the Catholic League Central which has Novi Detroit Catholic Central, Birmingham Brother Rice, and Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit. They also have a young team that seems to be getting better each day. The Eagles are off to a great start which included a big win over Oxford but can it last in the Lakes Valley Conference and there is Walled Lake Central to deal with and a much improved Walled Lake Northern squad. West Bloomfield has played a tough non conference schedule but the defense still concerns me with the Lakers. I think Orchard Lake St. Marys with the strength of the Catholic League will win some games and get the top spot. The Lakes Valley Conference looks strong with Lakeland, Walled Lake Central, and Walled Lake Northern battling it out. West Bloomfield despite the Red schedule, have some serious concerns defensively which is why they are in the fifth seed right now but it could all change for sure.

District 25 @ Oxford

OXFORD

Davison

Grand Blanc

Flint Kearsley

Holly

Lapeer

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Grand Blanc, 2. Davison, 3. Oxford, 4. Flint Kearsley, 5. Holly, 6. Lapeer.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Brennan Elling- Oxford

X FACTOR: Aiden Tipton- Flint Kearsley

PRONE TO GET UPSET: Davison

MOST DANGEROUS: Flint Kearsley

EARLY THOUGHTS: This is a really interesting district. Flint Kearsley comes into this district which makes things very interesting after winning the Flint Metro League Stripes division crown last season for Coach Joe Cockran. Oxford has home court but lost a ton of proven talent from last season but knowing Coach Joe Fedorchik he'll think of something. Grand Blanc is loaded with proven experience and players with Division One talent for Coach Doreace Martin. Davison looks to be solid as well especially after they struggled early but picked things up at the right time last season for Coach Mike Williams. Lapeer got better as the season rolled along last season for Coach Thomas Chittle. Holly struggled last season but they should be improved for Coach Steve DeHart. Overall this district looks like this is the Bobcats district to lose.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: There really hasn't been any changes to this district besides Holly and Lapeer switching spots. Grand Blanc is expected to be the top seed in this district. Davison has turn things around after an 0-2 start going 3-1 in their last four games. Oxford has slipped back a little bit after starting the season 3-0. Flint Kearsley has been competitive despite the record. Holly looks to be improved despite their record. Lapeer is really struggling right now. Overall this district has no changes as mentioned but keep an eye on Flint Kearsley, Oxford, and Holly, there could be some changes there.

District 24 @ Southfield Arts and Tech

GROVES

SEAHOLM

BLOOMFIELD HILLS

SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH

BERKLEY

Birmingham Brother Rice

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Birmingham Brother Rice, 2. Bloomfield Hills, 3. Groves, 4. Seaholm, 5. Southfield Arts and Tech, 6. Berkley.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Greg Grays- Birmingham Brother Rice

X FACTOR: D'Ron Mason- Bloomfield Hills

PRONE TO GET UPSET: Bloomfield Hills

MOST DANGEROUS: Seaholm

EARLY THOUGHTS: This looks to be a really interesting district but not like last season's district where there was a ton of drama. Birmingham Brother Rice's Greg Grays won the Warriors the district crown with his heroics against Groves on their home floor. Grays is back along with Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood transfer Stefan Bancia for Coach Ricky Palmer. Bloomfield Hills has the guards to win this district for Coach Brian Canfield. Seaholm is the most dangerous team in this district. The Maples improved as the season went along. They are expected to take a big jump under Coach Spenser Adams. Groves looks to be the wildcard after losing a ton of experience for Coach Marc West last season. Southfield Arts and Tech is the great unknown for new coach Josh Lyle. Berkley comes into this district with a new coach in James McCulloh and pretty low expectations. Overall until then this district is covered in orange and black.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This district looks to be right except switch Birmingham Brother Rice and Bloomfield Hills which will likely happen in 2026. The Black Hawks are off to a very strong start but dangers are still there with Bloomfield Hills if they have a rough shooting performance. The Warriors could be the best team in the State despite falling to Toledo Catholic Central and they don't have Greg Grays which is arguably their best player. Groves is very young in a very tough division being in the Red. Southfield Arts and Tech has played a very tough non conference schedule. Seaholm starting off strong but has fallen off since. Berkley is a very hard team to figure out. Overall no real changes except the top two teams should switch seeds really soon.

District 23 @ Hamtramck

OAK PARK

Hamtramck

Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit

Detroit Renaissance

Detroit Mumford

Warren Fitzgerald

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Hamtramck, 2. Warren Fitzgerald, 3. Detroit Renaissance, 4. Detroit Mumford, 5. Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit, 6. Oak Park.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Colin Langdon- Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit.

X FACTOR: Jayden Miller- Detroit Renaissance

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Warren Fitzgerald

MOST DANGEROUS: Hamtramck

EARLY THOUGHTS: This is going to be a absolutely brutal district for Oak Park and Coach Durrand Sheppard. The Knights struggled last season and could again this season. Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit is loaded, Detroit Renaissance is loaded, Hamtramck is loaded, and Warren Fitzgerald is a proven powerhouse. The Cubs have a new coach in Chris Jenkins after Pat Donnely was promoted to Athletic Director in the offseason. Detroit Mumford was up and down last season and has a new coach in Jermaine Kilbourne. Kilbourne was formerly at Detroit Western before becoming the new coach of the Mustangs and they added a transfer in Gavin Bobbitt who transferred from Redford Union this offseason. Overall this is a brutal district, the early favorite has to be the Cubs followed by the Spartans, Cosmos, Phoenix, Mustangs, then the Knights. It's going to be tough as mentioned for Oak Park.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This district is getting tougher and tougher by the day. Warren Fitzgerald should be a very interesting team as they are favored in the Macomb Area Conference White and they play a tough non conference slate. Hamtramck has home court and motivation. The Cosmos have played a tough non conference slate which included a win over Ferndale and has a very talented team. Detroit Renaissance is the Phoenix, they've been very consistent in the Detroit Public School League. Detroit Mumford is off to a solid start. Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit is off to a rough start which is surprising considering they are a Catholic League power with their only win coming against Orchard Lake St. Marys thus far, better days should be ahead for the Cubs. Oak Park is off to a surprising start but they need to play more games to get a better idea with what they have. Overall this is a very tough district to say the least.

District 22 @ Livonia Stevenson

FARMINGTON

NORTH FARMINGTON

Livonia Churchill

Livonia Franklin

Livonia Stevenson

Redford Thurston

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Farmington, 2. North Farmington, 3. Redford Thurston, 4. Livonia Stevenson, 5. Livonia Franklin, 6. Livonia Churchill.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Myles Smith-Farmington

X FACTOR: Jayden Glinz- North Farmington

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Farmington

MOST DANGEROUS: Livonia Stevenson

EARLY THOUGHTS: This district looks really interesting on paper. Farmington won the district last season and is loaded again for Coach Byron Johnson. North Farmington wants to get back to where they belong and they are more than capable of doing but they will have a new coach as Todd Negoshian stepped down and became the new Athletic Director at Stoney Creek. The Raiders went with former assistant and former junior varsity coach Pete Matayla as their new head coach. Redford Thurston won 15 games but the schedule hurt them which was a big factor in their loss to Livonia Stevenson in the first round last season. Livonia Stevenson looks to be the wildcard. The Spartans were up and down last season and they have home court. Livonia Churchill won 10 games last season. Livonia Franklin won eight games last season which has been a improvement to what has happened to the Patriots in the past. Overall this district goes through the city of Farmington, maybe Livonia Stevenson but until then this district is either brown and yellow or dark blue and silver.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This could be a really tough district when looking at the records. The top four teams have one loss. Farmington won in overtime over arch rival North Farmington and has won two straight with another game to go. Livonia Franklin had been hot which included a win over Lakeland but got blown out by Dearborn which is a cause of concern. Redford Thurston has been off to a strong start which included wins over Northville and Harper Woods with their only loss to Ann Arbor Huron. Livonia Stevenson has home court and is not too far behind. Livonia Churchill has struggled recently. This district is still blue and white or gold and brown but it seems to be changing by the day.

District 60 @ Birmingham Detroit Country Day

FERNDALE

FERNDALE UNIVERSITY

Hazel Park

Birmingham Detroit Country Day

Madison Heights Lamphere

Center Line

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Birmingham Detroit Country Day, 2. Center Line, 3. Ferndale University, 4. Hazel Park, 5. Madison Heights Lamphere, 6. Ferndale.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Cira Racco- Birmingham Detroit Country Day

X FACTOR- ???

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Madison Heights Lamphere

MOST DANGEROUS: Ferndale University

EARLY THOUGHTS: This could be a really interesting district on paper although no one has confirmed who is hosing the district. It's most likely that this district will be at Birmingham Detroit Country Day. The Yellow Jackets should be the overwhelming favorite with the talent they have coming back for Coach Amber Deane. Ferndale University could be the sleeper in this district. The Eagles have experience and could make some serious noise but Coach Bennie Szczepkowski stepped down coaching the program and Brian Pinkett has taken over the program. Madison Heights Lamphere struggled some last season under Coach Griffin Burton. The Rams have the experience to make some noise. Hazel Park really struggled last season but have a new coach in former Ferndale Coach Devin Pettaway. Center Line really struggled last season for Coach Josh Banks and they could again this season. Ferndale has a ton of questions when it comes to program strength which is why they are sixth. The Eagles have a new coach in April Johnson taking over the program Overall no one is touching the Yellow Jackets.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This could be a very interesting district to figure out. Birmingham Detroit Country Day is still the team to beat despite Center Line, and Ferndale University showing considerable improvement. Hazel Park has struggled a little bit. Madison Heights Lamphere is very suspect but they could turn things around and quick. Ferndale hasn't played a game yet which is very concerning. Overall the Yellow Jackets are still the favorite to win this district.

District 59 @ Eastpointe

HARPER WOODS

Eastpointe

Harper Woods Chandler Park

St. Clair Shores South Lake

Warren Lincoln

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Harper Woods, 2. Harper Woods Chandler Park, 3. Eastpointe, 4. Warren Lincoln, 5. St. Clair Shores South Lake.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Laynah West- Harper Woods

X FACTOR- Jayda Davis- Harper Woods

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Harper Woods Chandler Park

MOST DANGEROUS: Harper Woods

EARLY THOUGHTS: This looks to be a really interesting district on paper. St. Clair Shores South Lake won 14 games last season for Coach Wilbur Jones. Harper Woods was up and down at 500 last season for Coach LaTonya Tate. Harper Woods Chandler Park had a really rough year winning eight games for Coach Rodrick Glover last season. Warren Lincoln really struggled last season under Coach Jalen Ford. Eastpointe won 11 games but fell to Harper Woods Chandler Park in the postseason last season. The Shamrocks could be a sleeper to watch for Coach Deon Woods. Overall this looks very even on paper when looking at the teams, it's anyone's district to take.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: When seeds three through five are a combined 0-8 that's not a good sign at the moment. Harper Woods and Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy really stand out and could be on a collision course to meet in the district finals. I don't really see anyone matching up with the two Harper Woods schools for the time being.

District 61 @ Warren Regina

PONTIAC

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

Warren Regina

Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood

Macomb Lutheran North

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Warren Regina, 2. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, 3. Macomb Lutheran North, 4. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood, 5. Pontiac.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Kaylyn Sowers- Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

X FACTOR- Emerson Holder- Warren Regina

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Warren Regina

MOST DANGEROUS: Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood

EARLY THOUGHTS: This should be a really interesting district on paper. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep comes into this district after years with Birmingham Detroit Country Day but the Yellow Jackets are in a different district. The Fighting Irish have a new coach in Matthew Matuza after being the Junior Varsity coach last season. He has Pontiac Notre Dame Prep playing really well this summer. Warren Regina has a ton of proven experience and a proven track record for Coach Joe Charrette. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood had a down year for Coach Micaela Ellis last season. Macomb Lutheran North was up and down winning eight games under Coach Andrea Avery-Tiedt last season. Pontiac has been improving and won nine games going above 500 last season. The Phoenix will look to take the next step for Coach Corray Lett. Overall this looks like a two team race between the Fighting Irish and the Satellites but you never know with anyone in this district.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: There really isn't a ton of changes with this district. It should come down to Warren Regina and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep for the top seed. Pontiac concerns me with the way they've been playing lately. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood and Macomb Lutheran North are off to rough starts but they should bounce back. Overall there are a few changes but not much that could make an impact.

District 29 @ Warren Mott

TROY

TROY ATHENS

ROYAL OAK

Warren Mott

Warren Cousino

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Troy, 2. Troy Athens, 3. Royal Oak, 4. Warren Cousino, 5. Warren Mott.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Maci Zeiter- Troy

X FACTOR- Katrina Tasich- Troy Athens

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Troy

MOST DANGEROUS: Royal Oak

EARLY THOUGHTS: This should be a really interesting district on paper. Warren Cousino has been a proven powerhouse in the State. The Patriots won their district for Coach Amy Mitchell and blew out 55-21 Royal Oak in the regional semifinals last season. Warren Mott shared the Macomb Area Conference Silver crown with Clawson but the Marauders went 2-5 in their last seven games including a four game losing streak which led to them falling 65-28 to Royal Oak in the district semifinals for Coach Patrick Schmidt last season. Royal Oak has been a consistent power and also won a district over Berkley for Coach Brian Sopota last season. Troy Athens has shown a ton of promise this summer under Coach Stacie Klump and should be improved. Troy should be much improved and having some key players like Diamond Prince coming back should make the Colts in line make some serious noise this season for Coach Laura Guzman. Overall this is a really tough district and hard to predict.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This is a very interesting district. Troy and Troy Athens are off to strong starts but the Red Hawks have played a tougher schedule despite the Colts having the top seed at the moment. Troy has played much better but so has Troy Athens. It will be very interesting when they meet twice. Royal Oak has been off to a slow start. Warren Cousino has been off to a very slow start as well. Warren Mott has been up and down and could sneak up on someone like they did last season. Overall this has the makings of an even like district.

District 28 @ Utica Eisenhower

ROCHESTER

STONEY CREEK

Utica

Romeo

Utica Eisenhower

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Utica Eisenhower, 2. Stoney Creek, 3. Romeo, 4. Rochester, 5. Utica.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Sam Fulkerson- Stoney Creek

X FACTOR- Taylor Parsons-Rochester

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Stoney Creek

MOST DANGEROUS: Rochester

EARLY THOUGHTS: This almost the same district as last season but Adams moved north into Lake Orion. Utica Eisenhower stunned Stoney Creek 49-46 on their home floor albeit there was a ton of controversy with the officiating when it came to the clock in the district finals last season (timekeeper was correct.) The Cougars haven't forgotten that game and would love to return the favor to the Eagles on their home floor. Utica Eisenhower has a ton of proven experience in the Turner Twins (Mackenzie and Janelle) along with Natalya Stojevski coming back for Coach Madison Ristovski. Ritstovski has done a really nice job building program strength and it's her second year with the Eagles. Stoney Creek is a very interesting team that is in a precarious spot. The Cougars have the Ivezaj sisters (Izzy, Calista, and, Abigail) Sam Fulkerson, and Jaylen Freeman coming back for Coach Columbus Williams but depth is a concern for the Cougars. Romeo should be in the mix with a workman like group for Coach Ron LeBlanc. Rochester will be a different team without Alice Max and Kylie Robinson but they will still be in the discussion for Coach Andy Toppie. Utica struggled with a season ending injury to their top player. They should be better this season for Coach James Muchortow. Overall, the Eagles have to be the favorite because of experience and home court but the Cougars are right there with them with the Falcons as the darkhorse.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This is a very strong district. I still think Utica Eisenhower will pass Stoney Creek for the top seed and they have home court as well. I have a lot of serious concerns with the Cougars when it comes to depth and foul trouble. The Eagles have a very good team led by the Turner twins and Natalya Stojevski among others. Rochester is a different team than in past years but they were upset by Romeo 38-37 which is why they are the four seed at the moment. Utica is locked as the fifth seed. It will be tough for whoever the four seed is to play on that opening night and the winner likely would get the top seed which if predictions are right it should be Utica Eisenhower. Stoney Creek would like to stay away from Rochester if the Falcons get the three seed. Overall this district is still the Eagles district to lose.

District 27 @ Lake Orion

LAKE ORION

CLARKSTON

ADAMS

AVONDALE

WATERFORD

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Clarkston, 2. Lake Orion, 3. Adams, 4. Avondale, 5. Waterford.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Faith Zoldus- Adams

X FACTOR- Sasha McClellan-Avondale

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Clarkston

MOST DANGEROUS: Avondale

EARLY THOUGHTS: This is a really interesting district on paper. Adams comes north into the district. This will be the first time since 2021 that Adams will not be in a district with their city rivals Rochester and Stoney Creek. The Highlanders have a ton of experience and a new but a very familiar coach in Coach Justin Howard taking over the program. Adams should be a player in the Blue this season. Lake Orion is a really young team and has two key injuries they have been dealing with but under Coach Bob Brydges his teams usually get better as the season goes on. Clarkston has been solid winning two district crowns over Lake Orion by a combined four points including a 59-56 district final overtime classic last season on their home floor. The Wolves have the talent in Elliana Robak, Bella Flavin and Brooklyn Covert coming back but there are some questions of staleness that lingers for Coach Aaron Goodnough. Avondale lost a ton of talent after winning the Blue last season but they have a proven talent in Sasha McClellan coming back for Coach Roy Christmon. Waterford will be very young this season but they have a star player in Savannah Sartotius coming back for Coach Andrew Wellman. Overall on paper the Wolves are the favorite because of their proven experienced guards followed by the Dragons, Highlanders, Yellow Jackets, and Waterford.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: I don't see really any changes to the seeding. I'm surprised that Avondale is struggling a little bit but better days are ahead for the Yellow Jackets. Waterford is off to a strong start but I don't trust them in a matchup with the other four teams in this district. Adams is off to a strong start despite only playing three games. Lake Orion has a very young team that has seem to have found an identity. Clarkston is off to a strong start despite the tough schedule and have gotten contributions from players like Ava Waslik to go along with their big three. Overall no changes to the seeding to what I'm seeing even though the MPR sees things differently.

District 26 @ Oxford

OXFORD

Davison

Grand Blanc

Holly

Lapeer

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Oxford, 2. Davison, 3. Lapeer, 4. Grand Blanc, 5. Holly.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Kaitlyn Brockway- Oxford

X FACTOR- Savannah Rice- Davison

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Davison

MOST DANGEROUS: Oxford

EARLY THOUGHTS: This could be a really interesting district at Ian Smith Gym on paper. Oxford has some key pieces in Mia Champagne and Kaitlyn Brockway coming back for Coach Trevor Marshall. Grand Blanc looks to be the favorite with a ton of proven talent coming back but they have a new coach in Sylvester Liggins taking over the program after Bob Taylor retired from coaching this offseason. Davison was up and down last season. The Cardinals should be in the mix with their size in the interior and they have an emerging freshman to watch in Nia Wilson for Coach Lauhnna McMahan. Holly really struggled last season for Coach Ben Varner. Lapeer was up and down as well for Coach Joseph LoBaido last season. Overall the Bobcats should be the favorite but keep an eye on the Cardinals and the Wildcats.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This has the makings of a very interesting district at Ian Smith Gym. Oxford has a big 48-47 win over Macomb Dakota and has a talented player in Brockway as mentioned in the early thoughts. Davison has turned things around since their loss to Rochester, they have a win over Lake Orion as well. Grand Blanc has struggled with the coaching change and was blown out by Clarkston recently. Lapeer has been solid but they could struggle in the Saginaw Valley League as the season goes along. Holly has been struggling and they could struggle well into the Flint Metro League part of their season. Overall I see this district being Davison or Oxford's district to lose.

District 25 @ Lakeland

WEST BLOOMFIELD

Orchard Lake St. Marys

Lakeland

Walled Lake Central

Walled Lake Northern

PROJECTED MPR: 1. West Bloomfield, 2. Orchard Lake St. Marys, 3. Lakeland, 4. Walled Lake Northern, 5. Walled Lake Central.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Sheridan Beal- West Bloomfield

X FACTOR- Allie Crighton- Orchard Lake St. Marys

PRONE TO BE UPSET: West Bloomfield

MOST DANGEROUS: Walled Lake Northern

EARLY THOUGHTS: This could be a really interesting district. West Bloomfield made it to the Final Four four of the last five years but have lost several key players from their roster. Program strength will be something to watch for the Lakers and Coach Darrin McAllister despite getting some key players like Iyanna Davis coming from Ferndale. Orchard Lake St. Marys looks to be a serious contender to end West Bloomfield's reign as district champs. The Eaglets have a ton of loaded and proven talent led by Allie Crighton coming back for former Stoney Creek girls and Adams boys basketball coach Brad Crighton. Lakeland is a very tough team. They have home court which helps and is very competitive for Coach Mike Leitheim. Walled Lake Northern is very similar to their rivals on Bougie Lake Road. The Knights are a very competitive and have the Younes sisters in Zeina and Fatima coming back for Coach Josh Pees. Walled Lake Central really struggled last season but should be better this season for Coach Ken Nelson. Overall this looks like it could be West Bloomfield/Orchard Lake St. Marys part two but Lakeland and Walled Lake Northern could have strong says.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This is going to be a really tough district when looking at the teams. Walled Lake Central is locked as the fifth seed. West Bloomfield should be the one or two seeds which means the two Bogie Lake Schools could be in some trouble especially whoever is the third seed. That would mean the third seed could see either the Lakers or Orchard Lake St. Marys. The Eaglets have been on a tear lately which included blowout wins over Oxford and Clarkston and have shown no signs of slowing down. Lakeland has wins over Lake Orion and Oxford. Walled Lake Northern is always tough and well coached. This should be a fun district as mentioned

District 24 @ Bloomfield Hills

BLOOMFIELD HILLS

GROVES

SEAHOLM

NORTH FARMINGTON

Birmingham Marian

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Groves, 2. Bloomfield Hills, 3. Birmingham Marian, 4. North Farmington, 5. Seaholm.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Ella Swanson- Birmingham Marian

X FACTOR- Harlem Simpson- Groves

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Bloomfield Hills

MOST DANGEROUS: Groves

EARLY THOUGHTS: This could be a really interesting district which has four OAA teams and a proven Catholic League powerhouse. North Farmington was really young last season and should be better for Coach Michael Allin in their final season in the OAA before they leave for the Lakes Valley Conference. This could be Groves best chance to win a district crown for the first time since 2021. The Falcons have two proven guards in Jaycee Roy and Harlem Simpson coming back but interior play is the biggest question for Coach Jessica Duleba. Seaholm lost a ton of proven experience and has some questions for Coach Chris Manchester. Bloomfield Hills has some questions for Coach Renardo Brown. Birmingham Marian won a district crown last season and is loaded with proven experience but they have a new coach in Curt Rotter taking over the program. The Mustangs should be the favorite but you never know.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: Groves is on a serious tear right now scoring points in bunches and they could be on a path to win a district crown. Bloomfield Hills has surprised people since their blowout loss to Orchard Lake St. Marys. Birmingham Marian is going through a transition period that has to happen during the season. North Farmington has turned things around since their loss to Walled Lake Western. Seaholm has been very disappointing thus far especially from an offensive perspective. This district looks to be the Falcons district to lose.

District 23 @ Southfield Arts and Tech

BERKLEY

OAK PARK

SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH

Detroit Renaissance

Detroit Mumford

Warren Fitzgerald

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Detroit Renaissance, 2. Warren Fitzgerald, 3. Detroit Mumford, 4. Southfield Arts and Tech, 5. Berkley, 6. Oak Park.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Nicqo Shoulders- Berkley

X FACTOR- Jaebrian Autry- Detroit Renaissance

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Detroit Renaissance

MOST DANGEROUS: Berkley

EARLY THOUGHTS: This could be a really interesting district when it comes to different styles which is something I talked to Berkley Coach Clay Shaver about during Media Day last season and it was Detroit Renaissance for this reason. Detroit Renaissance is the overwhelming favorite in this district because of proven talent and experience for Coach DaShaun Wood. Berkley could challenge Detroit Renaissance if they play well and handle the speed and pressure the Phoenix could give them. Detroit Mumford has been solid for Coach Kareem Hogan. Southfield Arts and Tech has a strong year last season but there are some questions for Coach and Athletic Director Shaquita Coltrane that she'll need to address. Oak Park really struggled last season for Coach Tyler Washington. Warren Fitzgerald was up and down for Coach Juwan Shakespher last season. Overall this district has to favor the Phoenix but the Bears could have a say if they get to the district finals.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: This district looks to be Detroit Renaissance's district to lose, the Phoenix are loaded with proven athletes everywhere. Warren Fitzgerald looks to be one of the favorites in the Macomb Area Conference. Detroit Mumford has a proven team and are well coached. Berkley has disappointed me a little bit despite being competitive. Oak Park hasn't been consistent. Southfield Arts and Tech could make some big ground if they can keep winning. Overall no one is touching Detroit Renaissance based on styles.

District 22 @ Livonia Stevenson

FARMINGTON

Livonia Franklin

Livonia Churchill

Livonia Stevenson

Redford Thurston

Farmington Hills Mercy

PROJECTED MPR: 1. Farmington Hills Mercy, 2. Livonia Stevenson, 3. Livonia Franklin, 4. Farmington, 5. Redford Thurston.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT- Elle Geerings- Farmington Hills Mercy

X FACTOR- Sydney Nogas- Farmington

PRONE TO BE UPSET: Farmington Hills Mercy

MOST DANGEROUS: Livonia Stevenson

EARLY THOUGHTS: This looks to be a really interesting district when looking at all the teams. Farmington Hills Mercy looks to be the favorite on paper but don't count out Livonia Stevenson or Farmington. The Spartans have a ton of proven experience coming back and they are well coached under former Groves Coach Alison Hidey. The Marlins beat Livonia Stevenson 60-45 in the district final last season on their home floor. Farmington won the Gold last season. The Falcons have a ton of proven experience coming back for Coach Natalie Nowak in their final season in the OAA heading for the Lakes Valley Conference next season.  Livonia Franklin really struggled last season but they have all five starters coming back for Coach Collen Flaherty. Redford Thurston won 12 games last season and should be very interesting for Coach Princess Scott this season. This district could come down to the Marlins and the Spartans which could be another classic again.

CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS: The MHSAA made a change and moved Livonia Churchill to a different district but the situations in the district really doesn't change. Livonia Stevenson and Farmington Hills Mercy are still the two top teams to beat in this district. Farmington has some question marks as does Livonia Franklin and Redford Thurston to see if they can compete with the two top teams. There really isn't any changes when it comes to the outcome especially in the second round of the districts.

Girls Basketball Storylines.

Written Sunday December 14th at 1:00 PM

The Gold is off to a very interesting start. Ferndale University sits at 3-0 but the schedule has been very manageable for the Eagles. Waterford in their first OAA game fell 60-33 to Troy. Oak Park it's hard to judge them since they haven't played a game yet. Pontiac got blown out 66-5 by Auburn Hills Oakland Christian which is a cause for concern. Farmington is 2-1 in their final year in the OAA but is coming off a loss to Walled Lake Northern. North Farmington has bounced back nicely since their only loss to Walled Lake Western.

The Blue could be very interesting as well. Southfield Arts and Tech had a split week falling to Canton but bounced back winning by 40 over Warren Michigan Collegiate. Harper Woods has put things since falling to Farmington Hills Mercy with two blowout wins. Troy Athens looks to be much improved after two wins. Troy is also 2-0 after two solid wins. Adams had a tough loss to Stoney Creek but they will be fine. Can't judge Ferndale yet since they haven't played yet.

The White looks to be very competitive. Groves sits at 0-2 but they get a pass because they have played two very good teams. Berkley who is also 0-2 gets a pass as well with playing two very good teams. Avondale had a tough loss to Rochester but they will be fine. Bloomfield Hills split their two games falling to a very good Orchard Lake St. Marys program. Royal Oak has some questions defensively after falling 49-46 to Ann Arbor Huron. Seaholm is a mystery defensively which they are going through some offensive woes.

The Red should be very interesting. Oxford had a statement 48-47 win over Macomb Dakota behind Katelyn Brockway's 25 points after getting blown out by Orchard Lake St. Marys opening night. West Bloomfield had a tough loss to a very good Wayne Memorial program. Clarkston is off to a strong start at 3-0 and has been battle tested with a very young roster. Stoney Creek also sits at 3-0 after three close games but warning signs are still there with this team. Rochester is off to a 2-0 start after big wins over Davison and Avondale. Lake Orion is off to a rough start especially on the offensive end which that could be their issue all season long. The Dragons are also a very young team that is going through some growing pains as well.

I'll have more on this on the podcast.

1. Clarkston 4-0: Wolves clicking on all cylinders.

2. Avondale 4-0: Yellow Jackets clicking on all cylinders.

6. Farmington 2-0: Falcons are on a tear right now.

7. Pontiac 2-1: Phoenix playing well and getting battle tested.

8. Mott 3-1: Corsairs loss to Hartland might have woke them up.

9. Ferndale 2-2: If Eden Vinyard gets in foul trouble the Eagles are in trouble.

10. Lake Orion 2-2: Dragons will be fine despite loss to Plymouth Salem.

11. Stoney Creek 2-2: Cougars will be fine despite loss to Clarkston.

18. Southfield Arts and Tech 1-4: Warriors playing a tough non conference slate.

23. Harper Woods 0-1: Pioneers still struggling with identity.

25. Ferndale University 0-2: Eagles still struggling to score despite having a week off.

Boys Basketball Thoughts.

Written Sunday December 14th at 8:47 AM

Here are some thoughts on each team for the week. This will also be on the website https://aroundtheoaa.weebly.com/ as well

Avondale: The Yellow Jackets are clicking on all cylinders especially offensively. Avondale has had a ton of confidence which is why they are winning games. They have balance and they have been producing. It will be very interesting to see how Avondale responds going forward.

Clarkston: The Wolves are off to a great start and their play has showed it. Clarkston has balance and has really showed that they are for real. It will be really interesting if they can sustain this play when the Red goes deeper. The Wolves are in a great spot right now.

Ferndale: The Eagles have been battle tested which has shown in their games but it's clear that if Eden Vinyard gets into foul trouble or gets shut down that's bad news for Coach Juan Rickman and the Eagles. The non conference schedule helps in the long term but the short term Ferndale is going through some inconsistency right now.

West Bloomfield: The Lakers still have a defensive problem but its somehow improving despite allowing 56 points. The magic number for Coach Arnette Jordan to hold teams is below 45 points, if you hold a team to under 45 points, that's a great defensive win. The defense still continues to be the story for West Bloomfield but 56 points allowed is a start.

Groves: The Falcons have been a hard team to figure out, there are times they look good and times not so much. Groves will be dealing with those inconsistency all season long. It will be very interesting to see what Coach Marc West does heading into Christmas with these inconsistency issues.

North Farmington: The Raiders are off to a strong start but they needed to beat Detroit University Prep 67-58. The game between North Farmington and Farmington will be intense as it always has but the Raiders have a new coaching staff. It's clear that North Farmington is rolling right now and starting to become more battle tested.

Farmington: The Falcons are off to a strong start scoring a ton of points while allowing a bunch which is a concern. Farmington has continued the momentum from last season which is a good sign for them especially heading into the Red. Coach Byron Johnson has this program believing.

Waterford Mott: The Corsairs had an interesting week where they were upset by Hartland but knocked off their arch rival Waterford Kettering. Waterford Mott has been a very interesting team to figure out lately with the stunning loss to the Eagles and they took it out on their arch rival. Waterford Mott needs to figure their problems on big courts out or it could be trouble for the Corsairs.

Lake Orion: The Dragons shooting percentage is going to decide them games. The poor shooting percentage showed it's ugly head against Salem but something tells me that Lake Orion is going to be fine after the loss to the Rocks. The Dragons have to shoot well to win games that is the bottom line.

Adams: The Highlanders have seemed to turn things around after two tough losses to two very good teams by winning two straight games. It looks like Cannon Flynn might have found a robin which will be huge for the Highlanders going forward. Adams looks like they are clicking and heading in the right direction.

Stoney Creek: The Cougars are off to a strong start despite the loss to Clarkston, they are happier, more confident under Coach Marko Tomich. The schedule will get tougher for Stoney Creek but they are in a good spot right now.

Rochester: The Falcons have been on a tear and have been taking names. Rochester had a tough one with Troy Athens winning 47-38 on the road. The Falcons are for real, the Ann Arbor Skyline game could be their next test heading forward. Rochester is clicking that is for sure.

Oxford: The Wildcats have been competitive which is a great sign but there will be some very tough lessons which showed in their 49-48 loss to Utica Eisenhower on Friday night. Oxford will be fine going forward despite the loss but things are going to get harder from here for them.

Pontiac: The Phoenix have turned things around after losing to Avondale and have won three straight. Pontiac has proven they can win in different ways which is a good sign for Coach Dion Harris going forward. The Phoenix are fine right now.

Bloomfield Hills: The Black Hawks are rolling right now winning four straight games over quality competition. Bloomfield Hills has a chance to have a special year with the way things are going. They have a very interesting game with Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy looming this weekend which could be a fun one. The Black Hawks are clicking as mentioned.

Troy: The Colts have been very competitive going on a two game winning streak. Troy has been very good offensively as of late but the defense will be key for Coach Gary Fralick especially later in the season. The Colts are starting to put it together.

Troy Athens: The Red Hawks have been very competitive despite having tough losses lately but Troy Athens should be better despite the losses especially later in the season and heading into the postseason. The Red Hawks are much improved under Coach Mitchell Vercellino. It's only a matter of time before they turn things around.

Royal Oak: The Ravens have been competitive that is for sure and that is what Coach Aaron Smith wants, despite their two tough losses it is no doubt that Royal Oak has stepped up their game. This will be a team to watch heading into Christmas. Smith has the Ravens heading in the right direction.

Seaholm: The Maples went back to Earth a little bit with two tough losses to Adams and South Lyon East. Seaholm could be that mystery team this season. Coach Spenser Adams needs to find a way to get back to that Maples team that was very good defensively early in the year or trouble looms.

Waterford Kettering: The Captains are 2-2 in this young season, losing to arch rival Waterford Mott but beat Lapeer 48-45 on a buzzer beater, it's no doubt that Waterford Kettering is making progress under Coach Will Campbell but they still have a long way to go. The Captains have made a ton of progress from last season that is for sure.

Harper Woods: The Pioneers had a rough outing falling 56-43 to Troy. There are some concerns with Coach TaJuan Porter's team heading into the season. Harper Woods is in need of a bounce back if not they are in trouble.

Oak Park: The Knights had no trouble with Melvindale holding them to 12 points. Oak Park is off to a solid start but there are tougher road blocks ahead for the Knights going forward.

Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors had a rough week but Coach Josh Lyle likes to play very tough games as mentioned in last week's thoughts. Southfield Arts and Tech might be the favorite in the Gold with the way things are looking right now.

Ferndale University: The Eagles did not play this week but they have a ton of work to do if they want to get their scoring up. The defense has improved despite the two losses. The offense will be the key going forward for Ferndale University.

Berkley: It was a rough week for the Bears which saw two tough losses to American International Academy and Detroit Jalen Rose Academy. It's going to be a rough transition period for Berkley with a young team which is what everyone is seeing at the moment. The Bears have Bloomfield Hills and Madison which are going to be very tough games for them.

Boys Basketball Thoughts.

Written Sunday December 7th at 8:35 AM

Here are some thoughts on each team for the week. This will also be on the website https://aroundtheoaa.weebly.com/ as well

Avondale: The Yellow Jackets are off to a strong start early in the season winning 43-34 over Pontiac and 73-47 over Flint Standard are great wins but the game against Pontiac despite winning 43-34 has me concerned a bit about Avondale. The Yellow Jackets are very athletic but there are some questions that Coach Aaron Fox and his team need to address. If they can address this then Avondale will be fine. They have Detroit University Prep and West Bloomfield looming next week.

Clarkston: The Wolves look like they are the most complete team to start this early season. Clarkston got two wins over Lake Orion (77-49) and Adams (68-44.) The Wolves have a deep team and a ton of proven shooters just like the days of legendary coach Dan Fife. Clarkston has been improving each year under Coach Tim Wasilk but can they sustain is the key going forward. They have Stoney Creek and Ferndale looming next week.

Ferndale: The Eagles have been used to playing very tough schedules and this week has been no different for Coach Juan Rickman's team. Ferndale was blown out 89-57 by Birmingham Brother Rice and then blew out River Rouge 77-49. Eden Vinyard has been the star for the Eagles but they need others like Torrino Adams and others to step up. Ferndale has Clarkston, Ohio Reynoldsburg, and Warren Lincoln looming this week.

West Bloomfield: The Lakers defense could be a storyline to watch this season. It haunted them again allowing 84 points in a 84-72 loss to Detroit University Prep. Coach Arnette Jordan needs to shore the defense up and quickly. West Bloomfield will have three games with Birmingham Detroit Country Day, Avondale, and Detroit Cass Tech looming this week.

Groves: The Falcons had a very interesting week. Groves fell 54-53 to Oxford then bounced back and beat Warren DeLaSalle 59-54 and Imlay City 74-60. The Falcons young talent has managed to make a ton of strides despite this being a rebuilding year for Coach Marc West. I don't know how this will sustain in the Red but it's a start for Groves. They have two very tough matchups in Bloomfield Hills and North Farmington looming next week.

North Farmington: The Raiders are off to a strong start in their final season in the OAA winning 62-47 over Davison and 41-35 over Plymouth Canton. North Farmington has relied on their tough defense which has always been there for new coach Pete Mantyla. The Raiders have Detroit University Prep and Groves looming next week.

Farmington: It's really hard to judge the Falcons when they haven't reported their score with Ann Arbor Pioneer yet. Farmington has the athletes to be competitive in the Red but there are still some questions going forward for Coach Byron Johnson. They have Detroit University Prep and Southfield Arts and Tech looming next week.

Waterford Mott: The Corsairs look like they haven't missed a beat since getting to the regional final last season. Waterford Mott won two games over Stoney Creek 63-53 and 63-49 over Northville. The Corsairs have used their balance to win games which is a winning formula for Coach Jeff Jayson and his team going forward. Waterford Mott has Hartland and Waterford Kettering looming next week.

Lake Orion: The Dragons had an up and down week. They fell 77-49 to Clarkston behind turnovers and loss of identity. Lake Orion got back their identity with a stunning 72-53 win over Davison. When the Dragons play team ball that is where they are at their most dangerous which Coach Jose Andrades knows and makes him very happy. Lake Orion has two tough games with Novi and Plymouth Salem looming next week.

Adams: The Highlanders are off to a rough start but to their defense in their two losses they were to good teams (Clarkston 68-44, Macomb Dakota 60-53.) The problem for Coach Isiah Novak's team has been when Cannon Flynn is not on the floor, they tend to struggle when he is not. Adams needs to address this issue, they have the shooters but they need to find that Robin to the Flynn Batman if they want to find success this season. The Highlanders have Seaholm and Royal Oak looming next week.

Stoney Creek: The Cougars have found themselves a sense of confidence and hope under new coach Marko Tomich. Stoney Creek used their balance in a 69-55 win over Utica Eisenhower despite falling 63-53 to Waterford Mott but they were tied at half and hung in there throughout that game. Quentin Rangi, Brodie Telegdas, and Anthony Arlinghaus have been the story to their early success. It's clear the Cougars are much improved and happier under Tomich but there are still some dangers, warnings, and concerns. It's almost like this team and Tomich reminds me of the book Star Wars Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover and the movie but for now Stoney Creek has a lot of confidence from Tomich's first win but the road gets tougher. They have Clarkston and Utica looming next week.

Rochester: The Falcons are off to a strong start with three impressive wins (St. Clair Shores Lakeview (73-40), Utica (66-41), Chippewa Valley (66-46.) Rochester has gotten contributions from multiple players like Luke Lower, Logan Pleasent, Ben Bissett, and Anthony Chircho among others but the play of Nate Tandy fits this team very well, he's an engine and a machine when on the court. What makes Coach Nick Evola very happy is the Falcons play team ball. This is a style that makes most teams very dangerous and Rochester is one of those teams that plays this style. Rochester and their fans know that there will be more tough teams ahead. They have Lapeer and Troy Athens looming next week.

Oxford: The Wildcats had to replace a ton of talent from last season but they are off to a 2-0 start after surviving Groves 54-53 and had a strong defensive effort winning 34-15 over Fraser. Cade Lindamood has been a big addition for Coach Joe Fedorichik and they've gotten timely play from Grayson Boyle and Brody Casper while Brennan Elling is well Brennan Elling. Oxford has some concerns going forward despite the start, can they sustain this form of defense is the biggest one that Wildcats fans have to address. They have Troy Athens, Sterling Heights Stevenson, and Utica Eisenhower looming with two of those being tough games next week.

Pontiac: The Phoenix had a tough week that saw a tough 43-34 loss to arch rival Avondale but an impressive 69-61 win over Fenton. Pontiac has been going through some growing pains with the freshmen they have on the roster but for Coach Dion Harris this is a start to building something special in Pontiac. It's all about program strength for the Phoenix. They have Ferndale University and Lansing Eastern looming next week.

Bloomfield Hills: The Black Hawks are off to a strong start with a 60-49 win over Walled Lake Western along with a 61-32 blowout of Grosse Pointe North. DaRon Mason has been on fire this early season and all summer along with Carter Canfield and others for Coach Brian Canfield. They are clicking with Groves and Warren Woods Tower looming next week.

Troy: The Colts overcame a split this week winning 64-31 over Waterford Kettering but fell 63-55 to Utica. Troy lost Will DeArmit to an ankle injury but Harmon Orioum carried the slack with 27 points in the loss to Utica. The Colts were scrappy and they changed defenses with their press. Orioum and Jeffries played well along with Blake Kupier. Coach Gary Fralick's team will be fine. They have Harper Woods and Madison Heights Lamphere looming next week.

Troy Athens: The Red Hawks had a strong week which had two big wins and a heartbreaking loss. Troy Athens fell 61-60 to Macomb L'Anse Creuse North on a buzzer beater. They got wins over Ferndale University (64-26) and Berkley (61-44.) Coach Mitchell Vercellino's team will be fine despite the tough loss. The Red Hawks are tall and very lengthy which should help going forward. They have Oxford and Rochester looming next week.

Royal Oak: The Ravens are off to a strong start but they have won both games by a combined nine points (Holly 67-59, Madison Heights Lamphere 53-52.) For Coach Aaron Smith they are taking care of business like the Detroit Pistons have done but they have done things the hard way. We'll know a lot about Royal Oak when they have Walled Lake Western and Adams looming next week.

Seaholm: The Maples had a great week winning two games over Berkley (53-42) and South Lyon (45-23) but both teams are very young teams that are going through tough rebuilds. It's a great start for Coach Spenser Adams and company but they need a test down the line which they will get in the future. Seaholm will be tested with Adams and South Lyon East looming next week.

Waterford Kettering: The Captains had a bit of both wins and losses this week which should help their confidence heading into the season. Waterford Kettering won 63-53 over North Branch but fell 64-31 to Troy. The Captains are in a very interesting spot for Coach Will Campbell where they have Lapeer and Waterford Mott looming next week.

Harper Woods: The Pioneers haven't played a game yet but they will have two games with Troy and Westfield Prep looming next week for Coach TaJuan Porter.

Oak Park: The Knights haven't played a game yet but they will have two games with Melvindale and Center Line looming next week for Coach Durrand Sheppard.

Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors have toughen their non conference schedule which has seen ups which was a 58-47 win over Detroit East English Village Prep and the lows a 77-56 loss to Plymouth Canton. It is know doubt under Coach Josh Lyle, Southfield Arts and Tech is heading in the right direction. They have Farmington and Detroit Pershing looming next week.

Ferndale University: The Eagles have been struggling to score scoring 56 points in two games in both losses to Detroit East English Village Prep and Troy Athens. Ferndale University is going through a tough transition period right now for Coach Antwan Bradford. They have two tough games with Pontiac and Center Line Prep looming next week.

Berkley: There is no doubt the Bears are a very young team which was shown in their 53-42 loss to Seaholm and 61-44 loss to Troy Athens. It's going to take time for Coach James McCullough to get his style of play into Berkley. They have Detroit Jalen Rose Academy, Madison Heights Bishop Foley, and Inkster American International Academy looming next week.
