The Waterford Mott Corsairs received some bad news this past week from the MHSAA according to MIPrepZone's Bryan Emerson.
The Corsairs will be forced to forfeit their week one 45-0 win over Walled Lake Northern in week one because the Waterford School District found out that Waterford Mott played an ineligible player to which the player's parents provided false residency information to the athletic department and the Waterford School District enrollment offices.
Waterford Mott reported this to the MHSAA and were handed the penalty. "Unfortunately the district was made aware of this falsification after the student had played in the Waterford Mott, Walled Lake Northern football game" the press release said and confirmed by Emerson.
The Corsairs had an enrollment (undue influence) violation in the past which resulted in a one game suspension to then Coach Chris Fahr and other assistant coaches in 2016.
Waterford Mott had started the season 2-0 with wins over Walled Lake Northern and winning 28-27 over Milford last week falls to 1-1 on the season. The Corsairs are in their final season in the Lakes Valley Conference before coming to the OAA this winter. Waterford Mott has Walled Lake Western looming this week and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep the following week.
The Corsairs will appeal the decision the MHSAA made against them. "We believe our student and athletic programs should not be penalized for the falsified actions of a third party. WSD (Waterford School District) is committed to upholding the integrity of our academic and athletic programs and will work with the MHSAA to resolve this matter" said Waterford Mott Athletic Director Shane Hynes.
Waterford Mott as mentioned has Walled Lake Western and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep looming. This could have postseason impacts which could hurt the Corsairs and new Coach Tra'Jan Seay but Seay mentioned to Emerson that they have to take things one thing at a time and this is something they can't control.
This will be a situation to monitor really closely.
