As the 2021-2022 school year ends we look back to how this season went around the OAA.
We had a new school in Harper Woods join the league this past winter. The Pioneers won a district title in Boys Basketball and made the Girls Basketball district finals. Harper Woods will play a very tough White schedule for football this fall.
Rochester Adams made the Division One State finals for Football. The Highlanders postseason included wins over Lapeer, Oxford, West Bloomfield, and Grand Blanc. Adams fell to Belleville in the title game after a huge injury changed the complexion of the game. The Highlanders also added a State title in Competitive Cheerleading repeating as State Champions.
West Bloomfield won the Division One State crown in Girls Basketball. They beat Rockford in the State Semifinals and Rockford in the Division One State Finals earning their first State Crown.
Bloomfield Hills won the Division One State crown in Girls Soccer. They beat Northville in the State Finals in penalty kicks earning their first ever State crown.
We have had numerous great performances throughout the year. Too many to count.
The biggest story of this school year was the tragedy at Oxford on November 30th in which we all know what happened. It sent shockwaves throughout the State. The Wildcats athletic programs provided a major boost for the community at a time of healing. They won Oakland County crowns in Wrestling along with Boys Bowling and the Boys Basketball program shocked Davison and made the district finals.
Probably one of the biggest upsets I seen in a long time was in Girls Basketball occurred on March 4th. It was the district finals at Detroit Renaissance where the Berkley Bears, whom was middle of the pack in the White upset the Detroit Public School League and runner ups in last season’s Division One State Finals in the host school Detroit Renaissance. The Bears beat the Phoenix 51-31 earning their first division crown in a long while.
As we look to the 2022-2023 season, the league should be great again with great teams, great programs, great coaches, and great opportunities to thrive and earn more championships throughout the State.
