Girls Basketball Thoughts.

Written Sunday December 18th at 6:10 PM

Here are my thoughts from the week that was of girls basketball.

Oak Park: The Knights really struggled against Farmington on Friday night. Oak Park has really struggled to score despite putting 50 points against Detroit Martin Luther King. They have Bloomfield Hills and River Rouge looming this week.

Ferndale: The Eagles put up 63 points in a stunning 63-0 blowout of arch rival Ferndale University. They have Farmington looming this week.

Pontiac: The Phoenix are really struggling. They fell 55-7 to Southfield Christian and 54-6 to Avondale this week. Pontiac needs to address a ton of things as they have Waterford Mott looming before going on Holiday break.

Ferndale University: The Eagles have some serious concerns after losing 63-0 to Ferndale on Friday night. I thought Ferndale University would be better after making the district finals but they have really struggled. They have Avondale looming before going on Holiday break.

Avondale: The Yellow Jackets have won two in a row with a 39-36 win over Holly and 54-6 over Pontiac. Avondale looks to be turning things around which is a great sign for Coach Roy Christmon. They have Ferndale University and Warren Fitzgerald before going on Holiday break.

Farmington: The Falcons bounced back from two blowout losses to North Farmington and Royal Oak with a statement win over Oak Park. Farmington is clearly the second best team in the Blue behind Bloomfield Hills. They have Ferndale looming before going on Holiday break.

Bloomfield Hills: The Blackhawks have been rolling since their 19 point fourth quarter against Seaholm. Bloomfield Hills has won fourth straight and has shown no signs of slowing down. They have Oak Park looming before going on Holiday break.

Adams: The Highlanders has really struggled. They have lost five straight since beating Lapeer to open up the season. Adams is rebuilding the program to their defense. It’s a tough process right now for them. They have Waterford Kettering and Oxford looming before going on Holiday break.

Troy Athens: The Red Hawks have lost two straight albeit against very good competition in Utica Eisenhower and North Farmington. Troy Athens needs to find that magic that got them the 4-0 start. They have Harper Woods looming before going on Holiday break.

Harper Woods: The Pioneers had a split week by beating St. Clair Shores Lake Shore but lost a tough one to Royal Oak 53-50. Clelia Peterson had 18 points against St. Clair Shores Lake Shore. Harper Woods has Detroit College Prep, Troy Athens, Detroit East English, and Detroit Mumford over the holidays.

Seaholm: The Maples have some concerns. They have lost three straight games and haven’t been able to score 40 points in their three losses. Seaholm has Royal Oak and Saline at Eastern Michigan looming before going on Holiday break.

Royal Oak: The Ravens are starting to look more like themselves from the past. Royal Oak has won four straight since their opening night loss to Walled Lake Northern. They have Seaholm and Chippewa Valley looming before the Holiday break.

Berkley: The Bears have had a very odd week. They did not look very good against Southfield Arts and Tech falling 58-36 but bounced back against Adams in a big way with a 53-30 blowout. Maleve Nolan had a big game for Berkley against Adams with 18 points. Berkley has a long way to go to turn things around. They have a really tough matchup with North Farmington looming before going on Holiday break.

North Farmington: The Raiders earned three wins this week with the big one being over Stoney Creek. North Farmington has found a third scorer in Eliza Muller. She had a big game against Stoney Creek and also against Troy Athens. Muller will be key to aid alongside Sela Lefler and Penelope Creary. They have Berkley and also Saginaw Arthur Hill looming in the Motor City Roundball Classic looming.

Oxford: The Wildcats had a nice week with two wins over Seaholm and Brandon. Oxford has been clicking on all cylinders and right now is the favorite in the White. They have Adams looming before going on Holiday break.

Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors had a split week by a 58-36 blowout of Berkley but lost 60-40 to Stoney Creek. Southfield Arts and Tech can score with anyone but defense remains the great mystery. They have Rochester looming before going on Holiday break.

Troy: The Colts have had a rough week falling to Dearborn and Rochester. Troy is very young and is taking a ton of growing pains right now. They have Lake Orion and Dexter looming before going on Holiday break.

Groves: The Falcons have had a rough week going up against the Division One State finalists from last year in Hartland and West Bloomfield. Groves hung tough with Hartland but was blown out by West Bloomfield. The Falcons are in a very interesting spot right now, they are better than their record indicates. They have Clarkston and Waterford Kettering looming before going on Holiday break.

Stoney Creek: It was a split week for the Cougars. Stoney Creek had a fourth quarter collapse in their loss to North Farmington but bounced back to beat Southfield Arts and Tech 60-40. There are some concerns with the Cougars even though they have won games but the North Farmington game was a stunner for me. They have West Bloomfield looming before going on Holiday break.

Clarkston: The Wolves had a split week. They are still without Elle Robak. She is expected to be back in the near future. Clarkston beat Seaholm but fell to Lake Orion in a defensive struggle. The Wolves are very good defensively in the loss to Lake Orion. Clarkston should be fine. They should have Robak back and have Groves and Grand Blanc in the Motor City Roundball Classic looming.

Rochester: The Falcons are a much different team since their opening night loss to Farmington Hills Mercy. Rochester has had a good week by beating Rochester Lutheran Northwest, Troy, and Lake Orion in overtime. The Falcons have had timely play whether it is Ava Williams, Abbey Pleasant, or Natalie Rayce to go along with Alice Max. They have Southfield Arts and Tech and Macomb Dakota looming before going on Holiday break.

Lake Orion: The Dragons have been rolling and it has been without Kylie Heck. It proves that the depth of Lake Orion has been very efficient. Maddie Ebbert and Chloe Wiegers have been playing outstanding basketball. The Dragons won two games this week over Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and Clarkston but fell in a tough one in overtime to Rochester. They will be fine. Lake Orion has Troy looming before going on Holiday break.

West Bloomfield: The Lakers have been playing against very good teams but they are 2-2 in that stretch which included blowing a 22-9 first quarter lead in a stunning 66-62 loss to Ypsilanti Arbor Prep and the other loss came against South Bend Washington, Indiana. West Bloomfield beat Groves 70-41 to split the week. They have scored a ton of points with most being from the Davis and Hendrix sisters but if your Coach Darryl McAllister defense is a big concern. The Lakers are 1-2 in showcase games and they still have three more showcase games against Ann Arbor Pioneer (Eastern Michigan), Kentwood, Illinois (Motor City Roundball), and Detroit Cass Tech (MLK Classic.) West Bloomfield has Stoney Creek and Ann Arbor Pioneer looming.
