This is the Holiday Classic tournament column. This will be updated very often. Stay with the blog for recaps of these games. Here are the games and the approx times for the OAA teams involved in Holiday Classics or have a game over the Holidays.
Boys
Motor City Roundball Classic @ Ferndale
Waterford Mott 54, HARPER WOODS 52.
The Pioneers whom haven't played in a week and a half fell in a tough one to Waterford Mott 54-52 in the Motor City Roundball Classic on Tuesday morning. The Corsairs were without DJ Warren and Caleb Osbourne whom didn't play. Harper Woods trailed all game and kept it close throughout. Julian Young hit three three pointers with less than two minutes left to keep the Pioneers within striking distance. Waterford Mott found just enough offense and survived over Harper Woods. The Pioneers have Detroit Cornerstone to start the New Year.
Grosse Pointe South 52, WEST BLOOMFIELD 39.
The Lakers had a really tough outing on Tuesday afternoon against Grosse Pointe South falling 52-39 in the Motor City Roundball Classic. West Bloomfield really struggled with ball movement and turned the ball over numerous times. The Lakers allowed 25 points in the first half and really struggled to find consistency throughout the game. Karter Richards had 20 points while Alex English had 16 points and Anthony Benard had 11 points for the Blue Devils. This is the first loss for West Bloomfield this season. The Lakers should be fine but they need to respond heading into the New Year.
Orchard Lake St. Marys 54, FERNDALE 39.
The Eagles had a very rough shooting night on their home floor. They shot 29 percent in the first half while letting Orchard Lake St. Marys shoot 60 percent from the field in a 54-39 Eaglets win over Ferndale in the Motor City Roundball Classic on Tuesday night. Chris Williams led the Eagles with 14 points. The Eaglets did a very good job on Cameron Reed where he was held to six points. Orchard Lake St. Marys was led by Trey McKinney with 18 points and Daniel Smythe added 12 points on four three pointers. Ferndale trailed by 18 points at one point and cut the lead to eight with their full court trap but they missed some really bad shots and got a very costly technical which changed the game. Things are not looking good for the Eagles and Coach Juan Rickman. It's very important to keep the players emotions in check and stay positive through this stretch. Ferndale needs to regroup heading into the New Year.
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep 76, STONEY CREEK 51.
It was going to be a very tough matchup for the Cougars. They had a good first quarter up 12-11 but a 29 point third quarter led the Fighting Irish to a 76-51 win over Stoney Creek on Wednesday afternoon in the Motor City Roundball Classic. The Cougars are going through a transition period as said many times on the podcast but the non conference schedule is nuts with games against Birmingham Brother Rice, Lake Orion, Macomb Dakota, Hamtramck, Adams, and Clarkston. That's a very tough schedule and they have another game with Sterling Heights Stevenson looming on Thursday.
ADAMS 58, Birmingham Detroit Country Day 30.
The Highlanders bounced back after a really tough loss to Rochester with a convincing 58-30 win over Birmingham Detroit Country Day on Thursday morning in the Motor City Roundball Classic. William Dee had a big game for Adams in the win. Brady Prieskorn did not play in the game. The Highlanders head into the New Year riding a ton of confidence.
Detroit Henry Ford 49, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 36.
The Blackhawks were rolling coming into their game with Detroit Henry Ford but it was the Trojans that used a 2-3 zone to shut down everyone but Noah Adamcyzk in a stunning 49-36 win over the Blackhawks giving them their first loss of the season in the Motor City Roundball Classic. Bloomfield Hills had been averaging 70 points per game but Detroit Henry Ford was the real test and they fell short. Adamcyzk had 22 points for the Blackhawks. Bloomfield Hills will play in Lakewood, Ohio to play St. Edwards in mid January.
Macomb Dakota 54, OAK PARK 52.
It was a very good game in the Motor City Roundball Classic between the Knights and Cougars but it was Macomb Dakota that won 54-52 on Thursday afternoon over a very good Oak Park program in the Motor City Roundball Classic. Geon Hutchins, Robert Smith, and Jason Harrison had big games for the Knights. Oak Park will be fine despite the loss to Macomb Dakota. The Knights should have some confidence heading into the New Year.
Dearborn 46, BERKLEY 40.
The Bears had a very a competitive game on Friday afternoon against Dearborn but Berkley could not overcome the Pioneers as they fell 46-40 in the Motor City Roundball Classic. The Bears were without their starting point guard who went on vacation. The Bears however, will be fine going forward heading into the New Year.
North Farmington Holiday Extravaganza
Belleville 68, TROY 61.
In a game that featured Belleville dominating early but the Colts battled back and took the lead at one point but the Tigers found a way late. Mason Parker and Chase Kupier had big games for Troy. The Colts were tested for sure. They will be fine going forward. The Colts have Utica Eisenhower looming next.
NORTH FARMINGTON 66 Detroit Western 46
It's been almost two weeks since the Raiders played a game and they bounced back by beating Detroit Western in their own classic with a 66-46 win. North Farmington was dominant throughout leading 30-7 at one point. The Raiders have Toledo Whitmer looming on Friday night at home.
NORTH FARMINGTON 71, Toledo Whitmer 35
In a game that was a complete surprise the Raiders dominated against Toledo Whitmer dominating in all phases in a 71-35 blowout of Toledo Whitmer in the North Farmington Holiday Extravaganza. The Raiders are gaining a ton of confidence heading into the New Year.
Detroit Public School League Holiday Showcase @ Detroit Cass Tech
BLOOMFIELD HILLS 88, Detroit Pershing 57.
In a game that was never in doubt and very deceptive scoring wise Bloomfield Hills earned a 88-57 blowout of Detroit Pershing in the Detroit Public School Holiday Showcase at Detroit Cass Tech. The Blackhawks looked like a complete team with Noah Adamcyzk, Drew Wilson, CJ Jackson, and Ahmad Taylor. They did not have Brandon Newland whom didn't play. Bloomfield Hills had a 22 point first quarter and never looked back. Wilson had a nice game on both ends of the floor. They had 48 first half points with the proven experience and the impact of Wilson whom is a freshman. Adamcyzk had 30 points while Wilson had 14 points, and Jackson had 10 points. Bloomfield Hills has Detroit Henry Ford looming in the Motor City Roundball Classic.
Northville Showcase
South Lyon East 72, AVONDALE 60.
The Yellow Jackets had a really tough matchup with South Lyon East on Wednesday afternoon at Northville. The Cougars had a ton of experience coming into the game with Avondale and they used it in their 72-60 win. Coach Pat Clancy's team sits at 3-4 and heads into the New Year reeling a little bit.
New Baltimore Anchor Bay Classic
Grosse Pointe North 54, ROCHESTER 45.
The Falcons have been riding high after beating Adams on the road last week but they have been hit with the injury bug like what a lot of teams have been going through this season. They had a very tough matchup with Grosse Pointe North at New Baltimore Anchor Bay on Tuesday afternoon. Rochester fell 54-45 to the Norsemen. Adam Aryault had 21 points and James Phillips added 16 points for Grosse Pointe North. The Falcons have to bounce back and quickly. They will play New Baltimore Anchor Bay on Wednesday at 5 PM.
ROCHESTER 46, New Baltimore Anchor Bay 42.
The Falcons bounced back after going down 36-30 in the fourth quarter and went on a 10-0 run and a 16-6 run to take third place in the New Baltimore Anchor Bay Classic with a 46-42 win over the host Tars on Wednesday evening. Rochester is banged up right now and these next few days will be critical for Coach Nick Evola to have his team rest up and get ready for the New Year.
St. Clair Community College Showcase
FERNDALE UNIVERSITY 41, Sanford Meridian 31.
The Eagles were tested in the St. Clair Community College Showcase and picked up a huge 41-31 win over a very good Sanford Meridian program on Friday night. Once we can get the score it will be up. It's a huge win for Coach Josh Nicks and Ferndale University as they head into the New Year with some confidence.
TROY ATHENS 58, Madison Heights Lamphere 38.
The Red Hawks bounced back after a tough loss to Okemos to beat Madison Heights Lamphere in the St. Clair Community College Showcase 58-38. Emmanuel Robinson had 15 points and Hayden Crum had 12 points for Troy Athens. The Red Hawks are at 500 heading into the New Year.
Other Games
Okemos 72, TROY ATHENS 41.
It was going to be a very tough matchup for the Red Hawks playing at Little Caesars Arena against Okemos in a game that was moved from Okemos to Detroit. Troy Athens was no match for the Wolves as they won 72-41 on Tuesday afternoon. They had a really tough time with Okemos in the game. The good news for the Red Hawks is that they have another game before closing out the year with Madison Heights Lamphere at Port Huron.
CLARKSTON 57, Utica Eisenhower 56.
The Wolves came back from a seven point third quarter deficit to beat Utica Eisenhower 57-56 in the Dan Fife Holiday Classic at Clarkston. The Wolves used balance scoring but Brody Kosin had a nice game along with Desman Stephens as well. Clarkston heads into the New Year with a very interesting matchup with Fenton looming on the road.
GROVES 55, Walled Lake Central 52.
The Falcons had to survive on Thursday night against a good Walled Lake Central program winning 55-52 in Beverly Hills. Josh Gibson had 15 points, Josh Simpson had 14 points, and Elijah Yelder had 13 points for Groves. It's a good win for Coach Marc West after two tough losses. The Falcons will be fine heading into the New Year.
Sterling Heights Stevenson 73, STONEY CREEK 62.
In a game that was very scrappy throughout the Cougars could not overcome the Titans on Thursday night at Sterling Heights Stevenson. Jake Fulkerson had 18 points and Tre Walker had 14 points for Stoney Creek. The Cougars will be fine even though they did not have Peyton Rummler whom was out with an injury. They have a really tough non conference and it continues heading into the New Year with Birmingham Brother Rice looming.
River Rouge 68, FARMINGTON 26.
The Falcons just came off a flu outbreak but really struggled against River Rouge falling to the Panthers 68-26 on Friday night. Farmington scored 14 points in the first quarter but 12 points the rest of the game. They need to get healthy but they have two tough games looming in the New Year.
Girls
Motor City Roundball Classic @ Detroit Westfield Prep
Grand Blanc 31, CLARKSTON 26.
It was a low scoring game at Detroit Westfield Prep between the Wolves and the Bobcats. It was Grand Blanc that won 31-26 on Tuesday afternoon. Chelsea Bishop led the Bobcats with 13 points but she did not score in the second half. Clarkston hung really tough with them. They were very good defensively and outscored Grand Blanc 11-9 in the second half. Elle Robak made her return to the lineup for the Wolves. Robak had eight points and eight rebounds while Ava Hernandez added six points. Goodnough tweeted that his team was getting closer which is a good sign however it's going to get a lot tougher for Clarkston as they have West Bloomfield looming.
WEST BLOOMFIELD 86, Kenwood, Illinois 83.
The Lakers picked up an emotional overtime win in the Motor City Roundball Classic at Westfield Prep with an 86-83 victory over the third ranked team in Illinois in Kenwood, Illinois. They trailed by 15 in the third and rallied to comeback. Indya Davis had 31 points and Summer Davis had 28 points in the win for West Bloomfield. The Lakers are rolling into the New Year with confidence.
NORTH FARMINGTON 47, Saginaw Arthur Hill 42.
The Raiders found a way to stay unbeaten after a hard fought 47-42 win over Saginaw Arthur Hill on Friday afternoon. North Farmington was going to be tested and they were. Sela Lefler and Penelope Creary had big games and they needed them in a big way. Lefler had 18 points while Creary had 11 points. The Raiders head into the New Year riding with confidence.
Detroit Public School League Holiday Classic @ Detroit Renaissance
Detroit Mumford 69, HARPER WOODS 60.
In a game that was expected to be high scoring the game really lived up to that billing. Harper Woods fell 69-60 to Detroit Mumford on Wednesday afternoon in the Detroit Public School League Holiday Classic at Detroit Renaissance. The Pioneers had no problem getting to 50 points for the sixth straight game but the defense has been a complete issue for Harper Woods. They allowed Detroit Mumford's Samayra Jefferson to have 31 points with seven three pointers. The Pioneers had a strong start to the first quarter going up 20-15 but when Cecelia Peterson got into foul trouble that's when Harper Woods had problems against the Mustangs. The Pioneers have had trouble when teams speed them up and get into foul trouble. That's exactly what happened and it really hurt them in this game. Peterson had 24 points to lead Harper Woods. The Pioneers have a lot of time ahead of them heading into the New Year unless they can add another game to their schedule.
St. Clair Community College Showcase
Deckerville 39, OAK PARK 21.
It was going to be a very tough matchup for the Knights against Deckerville. Oak Park fell 39-21 on Friday morning to the Eagles at St. Clair Community College in Port Huron. The Knights have a lot of work ahead of them on both sides of the floor heading into the New Year.
