James McCulloh has overcame a ton of adversity in his coaching career. Everyone deserves a second chance, could this be the chip on his shoulder he is looking for in Berkley???
The Bears named McCulloh as their new boys basketball coach on Thursday afternoon. He takes over for Coach Joe Sermo who stepped down last month.
"I'm excited to share that I've officially accepted the position as head Boys Basketball Coach at Berkley High School. I'm honored to lead this program and help our student athletes grow on and off the court. Lets build something special. Go Bears" McCulloh wrote on X.
Inside the OAA and The D-Zone confirmed the hire.
McCulloh coached at Livonia Churchill from 2016-2023 and prior to that he was an assistant at Seaholm under Coach Spenser Adams last season. McCulloh had things really challenging when he was with the Chargers going 16-153 in his seven years including a 1-45 record in his final two seasons with the program.
Berkley struggled with injuries going 6-18 and finishing last in the Blue. The Bears fell 58-38 to Royal Oak in the district semifinals last season. They have Ries Tuttle, AJ Green, Sam Sermo, and Drew Sermo coming back along with a ton of program strength.
McCulloh along with his new team will look to have a bounce back season. The Bears will be in the Gold with Waterford Kettering, Ferndale University, Harper Woods, Southfield Arts and Tech, and Oak Park this season. The district has not been announced yet.
There will be a transition period which McCulloh and the Bears have to go through which has to happen during the season.
I'll have my thoughts on the podcast on Tuesday.
Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest on this developing story.
