Oxford will have a new boys basketball coach next winter.
Wildcats Coach Steve Laidlaw has stepped down from the program citing a source on Twitter from Dan Champagne whom is the father of Jake Champagne.
Laidlaw informed the players of his departure on a text message to the players but that can’t be verified as of yet.
Laidlaw had two stints in Oxford (2002-2009 and 2016-2023) but he will be most remembered for the 2018-2019 season which he led the Wildcats to a 23-2 record which included a district championship over arch rival Lake Orion and a regional final appearance falling to Howell.
Laidlaw went 14-10 where they fell to Grand Blanc in the district semifinals this season. He has coached several great players from Billy Keenest, Trey Townsend, Michael Raisch, and Jake Champagne in his legendary career.
It will be very interesting to see what direction the Wildcats go with next season. They have Champagne along with Dominic Cassisse, Jay Cady, Luke Stoffan, and Drew Cady coming back next season. Program strength looks to be solid for the new coach as well.
Laidlaw was at Oxford when they were in their darkest of times but also their brightest of times as well. He will be missed for sure in Oxford.
Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest on this developing story.
Here is the Tweet from Champagne
Champagne should take over the program or the old LO coach should.
