The Highlanders went in house with their new girls basketball coach.
Adams named Justin Howard as their new head coach. Howard replaces Joe Malburg who was let go last month.
The MHSAA website confirmed the hire.
Howard was an assistant under Shay Lewis and was the Junior Varsity Coach under Malburg. He knows the players and program very well and has experienced a lot within the program.
Adams went 10-11 last season under Malburg falling to Romeo 37-33 in the first round. What helps Howard will be is that he has a ton of proven experience in Faith Zoldus, Jordan Jarrell, Layla Tomezak, Regan Moore, Alyssa Stephens, Nora Camaj, and Nadia Heppner coming back.
The Highlanders will be in the Blue with Harper Woods, Southfield Arts and Tech, Troy Athens, Troy, and Ferndale this winter. They will also have to deal with city rivals Rochester and Stoney Creek as well. It is unknown what district they will be in which should be announced really soon.
Howard brings stability to a program that has been up and down and the players and program are familiar with him. He will have some challenges ahead in building program strength and not having a ton of varsity coaching experience despite learning from Lewis and Malburg.
Howard has been really loyal and committed to the program. That loyalty earned him this opportunity to coach the program in his own image.
I'll have more on this on my podcast on Monday.
Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest on this developing story.
